Does Connor Williams have the frame to get bigger and stronger?

Would it hurt William’s “development” to replace him at LG with Collins (for now), and put Fleming at RT?

Of course, when Tyron Smith can’t go (inevitable), we’ll have to switch back, so Fleming can go to LT...see, this is why the Cowboys love ‘position flex’ so much!

Look at Gregory and Jay Smith. These guys get a lot bigger. I bet he is right around 300 lbs today. Too small. I also bet he comes back 10-15 lbs heavier next year and much stronger. I think he will be fine.

None of this really matters unless you get rid of the morons on the sidelines.

Fleming is no Chaz Green!
hope we dont find out....if we do,that means Smith or Collins is hurt.
I just remember what Nate said during and after each of our pre-season games....depth along the oline just aint there....and he was including Mr.Fleming.
Collins needs to stay at OT.

does he have the frame to get bigger and stronger or is he nearly physically maxed out?

the team wanted to start him, but we all know he is weak and needs a year in the weight room.
my only concern is if the year in the weight room going to do it.

Many people claimed Tyron would never get big enough. He played at under 300 in college. Now he is the strongest player on the team.

Jermey Parnell was about 270 when the Cowboys first signed him. He departed as one of the strongest players on the team and drastically more powerful than Doug Free.

The Cowboys OL scheme is called zone run. Predicated on lighter, quicker, agile players making it to the 2nd tier to block for the running back. The pass protection has ALWAYS been weak, which is why Romo was so battered his last couple of seasons. That being said, I'd swap Collins and Williams in a heartbeat. They both appear to be out of position in THIS scheme

I think he's only going to get better as the season goes along.
He'll still lack power by NFL guard standards, but we should expect him to improve with how he deals with power as the season goes on.

And while it's true that he lacks power, he has better movement skills than most all LGs. It's a tradeoff. He shouldn't be judged solely on his weakest attribute.

So what about LG? Right now it’s a weakness.

When I was 21 I was 6'4" 225 lbs. When I was 25 I weighed 305. All he has to do is get married.

right now I leave Williams at OG....I dont see how not playing helps him improve, personally.
IF a change is made,I wonder if they do it at the bye week.
For me...I leave Collins at OT and Williams at OG....if you told me that Collins moves inside and Williams moves over,Id give that a shot.

Weaknesses:
  • Not strong at all
  • Underweight
  • More of a guard build, but a weak guard
  • Physically has a hard time playing tackle
  • Durability
  • Short arms for a tackle - 33 inches
  • Weak base
  • Gets bull rushed
  • Susceptible to power moves
  • Struggled with speed guys
  • Plays soft
There are a lot of problems for Williams in the NFL. The biggest issues is that he is not strong at all. He plays soft and gets pushed around. He lacks strength in his base and speed rushers can give him problems. He has an issue with sustaining blocks as defenders can break away from his blocks.

As we reported in the Hot Press, Williams was receiving some mid-round grades from evaluators during the season. Some teams have Williams higher, while others really dislike his game. The main issue that sources said was hurting Williams is the lack of strength. One AFC team in need of tackle help said they gave him a late third-round, early fourth-round grade. Another said they gave him a fourth-rounder and could easily have graded him in the fifth round. I spoke with a NFC general manager who scouted Williams in person this season, and they were disappointed in Williams overall. They felt Williams lacked strength and thought him overhyped. This NFC general manager said they thought Williams was a fourth-rounder for them. Some sources felt he should move inside to guard.

For the NFL, Williams is a tweener guard/tackle. His height and lack of length would fit better at guard. However, his lack of strength would be very problematic on the inside as strong or heavy nose tackles will give him problems. His feet and athleticism would fit better at tackle, but he lacks strength there and speed rushers can give him problems. In the 2018 NFL Draft, Williams will probably be a second-day pick, although many mock drafts project Williams to go in the first round and it only takes one team to fall in love.

There's no way he's 311. Tyron Smith is 6'5" 312.
Uh yeah, don't think Tyron has been 312 since his 2nd season. He been listed at 325 the last few years. Williams weighed 310 at the combine!

There is NO way, Williams is 311 pounds right now. Not sure he is 6'5" inches either. He has lost weight since draft if you ask me - comparing TV pics and photos.... I would be surprised if he is 280 pounds right now.
He can gain weight - even poor weight (blubber) can help strength and will certainly assist with anchoring. He doesn't seem to whiff at all, his feet look like in right spot - he just gets pushed back or out-massed/powered. He will make a few mental mistakes too - but he seems smart and also appears agile and to have great feet/movement on some plays.
His reps were good at combine.
YES, anyone 21+ can gain muscle weight - a guy not on steroids can on average gain 1 pound of muscle mass per month with resistance training in late teens and twenties. It starts to slow down eventually though as you start to reach genetic maximum. Freak athletes and big guys like in NFL with the training and supplements can gain more than that. And that is muscle - put a guy on high calorie diet and he can gain a lot more weight than that - but makes it harder to run. When your joints are puffy and you retain a lot of water, that helps with strength. We are an odd team having both Tyron Smith and Conner Williams being super lean as far as traditional oline guys go....Almost bodybuilder types instead of power lifter/oline look. Zack Marin, while not fat at all really (in traditional use of word), just looks so different and thicker in a power lifter style.

Some guys just take longer to get stronger and that "man strength". Even guys that are taller and have bigger frames.
Give him time. He has been thrown in there - but IS smaller at moment.

An example. The DE Cameron Wake from the Dolphins, used to play in the CFL - he was maybe 255. He looks WAY bigger now. I think it is a combo of bulking up and continuing to lift heavy - I also suspect he is juicing - but that is unfair - because these guys are athletic and genetic "freaks" (in the positive context). Guys can continue to get bigger and stronger long past age 21. I am hitting personal records at gym for bench and shoulder press at nearly age 50.....

I just don't think our coaching staff knows how to assist guys (see Chad Green vs Atlanta last year) nor do they exploit other teams' weaknesses well. To be fair there, hard to ask Looney to keep assisting Conner Williams if he is shaking his own rust off and learning to be starting center himself....and I think Tyron struggles when he has a rookie beside him and he loses focus on his own job, probably trying to do too much himself or keep an eye on Rookie.....just my opinion there.
