Does Romo really give the Cowboys the best chance to win over Dak?

I hope Dak plays well, but I suspect a great many fans are about to remember the sobering fact that the woods are full of players who showed flashes of brilliance in NFL preseason games, while only a handful of QBs to ever wear the star have had the kind of success Romo has had.

Just to be clear - I don't think Dak is now better than Romo ever has been. I'm just not sure Romo's mental ability is enough to compensate for what he lacks in physical ability...we haven't seen that Romo since 2014.

Yes, Romo does. Because, ideally, we're limiting Dak's pass attempts to less than twenty per game. We don't have to impose such limitations on Romo.

Did I miss something?

Yeah, you missed capturing my attention with this. I didn't make it past the title because the premise is so ridiculous. I am still optimistic for the season because I do think Dak can get the job done in Romo's absence (and I think the rest of the NFC East is average to terrible), but to suggest that Romo might not give us the best chance is a little too rich for my blood. The guy should have been the MVP of the entire league just two years ago. The team couldn't win a single game without Romo last year. And yet, here we are, questioning whether Romo is the best QB for this team. I blame social media. And millennials.

As much as I'm excited about the prospects Dak presents and been a critic of Romo over the years my football instincts tells me a healthy Romo provides us an increased possibility of winning now.

Now that doesn't mean Dak isn't capable of sparking us . And that doesn't mean if you don't think we're a true contender this year it might serve our future more with Dak getting the experience in if he's truly the heir apparent .

"
The Question you have all dreaded to be asked..." was the original title. The moderators changed it. As for your take on Romo, I'm with you and I agree he was the best option 2 years ago. I question rather or not he still has the physical ability to get the job done. The mental part he has in spades...on that he is on another planet from Dak. But I do wonder if gone are the day's that we see him fake out the likes of Watt as he did in 2014. Not saying they are gone...just haven't seen that Romo in awhile and I am in desperate need of a reminder.

Fair response. But will Romo ever be healthy enough to duplicate what he did in 2014...that's the real question.

I'm pretty sure they are not "imposing" that restriction on Dak. As Garrett loves to say, "That's not the world we live in."

10-6 with Romo, 6-10 without.
Now if Dallas is 2-2 when Romo comes back and he plays the rest of the way anywhere from 9-7 to 11-5 possible.

Who knows. Probably not. But he really wasn't that healthy all year in 2014 having his most effective season .

If we have the running game dominance on offense and turnover creator on defense we had in 2014 we won't need a typical Romo production nor need him to win as games for us.

I just don't know if past win/loss ratios factor into this conversation. For starters Dak wasn't a backup then. That's kind of a big part of this discussion.

I will not say Dak Prescott is the next Tom Brady, but like Brady he is going to start his first game under the same circumstance. I think the Cowboys are going to have a hard decision when Tony is ready to play. The offense is going to run the ball down the throat of the opponent. I see a lot of 3rd and shorts in our future. I think the run/pass threat of Prescott is great for converting 3rd and short. He will move the chains, but will he put the ball in the end zone? Elliott may do that for him. I think he gets the team to 4-2 with smart efficient play interrupted by the occasional big play to Dez off play-action. Safeties are going to be crowding the line in run support. This will make his deep field reads a lot easier.

We probably are. If you think we want him throwing the ball 30 times a game, you're wrong.

I didn't say that's what they want. I just don't think they go into games with a snap count in mind. What happens is what happens. As far as that goes, I'm sure they are largely reactionary in their approach to snap count.

Zeke has a nose for the endzone...that shouldn't be a problem.. But while we are at it, Dak also has a nose for the endzone, so like I said in the OP, it could be really, really good and I imagine if it is, it will be really, really difficult to take Dak off the field once Romo is healthy.

if you had to choose between dak and romos cap space prior to free agency or romo being the starter, it would be worth discussing. Thats not reality though.
