Again, not that it's anything, but it was 3 years. By his third year, he was Miami's all time kickoff and punt return leader and led the team in receptions in 2006 with 67. Austin in his 3rd year had 13 receptions (18 career). We are evaluating Austin on his potential displayed preseason and in underthrown passes that should have been TDs not in actual production like Welker.
By his 3rd year, Welker was as well known as his 2nd year, which means very little. The " known " guys were the other receivers Chris Chambers and Marty Booker, plus and TE Randy McMichael, who all put up just about identical numbers. Leading the Dullphins in reception with 67 in those years meant about as much as Kelvin Martin leading the Cowboys in reception in 1989.
One more time: Welker himself was shocked that the Patriots made him an offer. He said that it came out of nowhere. He was expecting to sign the Dullphins' tender and report back to camp.
As for Miles, it's more than just pre-season. As a matter of fact, he scored three times as many TDs in one year as Welker did in his entire Dullphins career, and he did it as a 4th receiver on a team loaded with star players, meaning he wasn't even 5th in the pecking order.
Oh, and another thing, both only have one kick return for a TD as returners.
