I don't live in Texas & I travel for a living.
I find a lot of haters that will bring up the "America's Team" thing as a reason to hate the Cowboys.
It's arrogant to them particularly in light of them having no SB's in many years.
They don't care where it came from. It's just viewed as those arrogant Cowboys & their fans!
Then they become complete hypocrites as every year or so some organization's fans tries to claim that they are America's Team.
Being born and raised in NY, there were a ton of Cowboys fans where I grew up. Even in 1989. I remember that year my friend and I were talking about 'how this team looked pretty good' in preseason; only for them to go 1-15
But from my experience living in NY a lot of Cowboys haters who weren't Giants fans just didn't like Texas and Texas culture. As a Yankees fan, I see the same now that I have lived in the south tor the past 13 years. People just hate the Yankees because they hate NY and NY culture. Being successful only brings it to their attention.
I just think the bandwagon argument is patently false. Since 1999 we've been #1 favorite team in America according to Harris Interactive polls for all but 3 years. The other years we finished 2nd (twice) and 4th (once). This despite having 1 playoff win. Meanwhile, teams like the Steelers, Patriots and Colts have shown giant leaps in their rankings of favorite teams in the past 10 years. And teams like the Eagles improved greatly in the polls when they were winning and then declined when they were losing.
It will never stop the narrative that the Cowboys have 'bandwagon fans', but the facts show that the Cowboys and Packers have the least bandwagon fans out there.
