Escobar and Williams were a package. The team drafted both so that however the offense works out during the 2013 season we were covered. We would have our 3rd WR or our 2nd TE.

On Witten, how long has he looked slow and still managed to get open? He caught 67 percent of his targets, how does that compare with other TEs and his past record?

Disagree completely. We knew we had age and depth problems, thus the debate on taking Floyd in the 1st round. Most of the predraft was about Dline and safety. We knew the deal on all of those guys and knew there was no room to spare. Nothing about it is hindsight because it was assumed we would hit those areas.

If by legit you mean:

*A 31-year old DE who hasn't looked right in two years.
*A 32-year old DT who hadn't played in two years.
*A 31-year old DT on the final year of his contract who's been a career backup.
*A 29-year old DE who was injured, on the last year of his contract, and recorded his first 10+ sack season.

then I agree, they looked legit.

Pretty sure there were 4 probowler players on that D-line with the oldest being 31 years old. It wasnt exactly an issue that screamed for attention.

Yes, by ANY standard the Defensive line looked legit. Also, your information is wrong. Which is known to be a common element of your posting.

By not "looked right" means 11 and 19.5 sacks.... I agree.

I keep going back to last year's pick of Escobar and scratching my head and wondering why they would take him when there were a couple of highly rated guards on the board (including Warford) when we were on the clock and selected Escobar. We could have avoided paying Water's salary last year by taking a guy like Warford.

In my mind about the only way that the Escobar pick makes sense is if Jason Witten's days (and cap hit) are numbered and we were looking for his replacement.

They didn't believe that Warford was a good fit in their Zone Blocking Scheme. They hired to coaches to implement that scheme, Callahan and Frank Pollack. The ZBS is one of the reasons that Doug Free was better this year. It allowed him to function in a way that he can't function as a power blocker.

You wouldn't draft a 3-4 NT if you're a 4-3 team and you wouldn't change from 4-3 to a 3-4 just because 1 player is available in the draft that fits the other scheme.

Then you must hate our current offensive line. A bunch of young whippersnappers who haven't done squat in this league.

Stop making assumptions. You clearly dont watch football.

I do believe the line drafted a center pretty early.

Witten's days are numbered but they still need his leadership. Dan Campbell was a great mentor for Witten and I feel Witten can do the same for Escobar.

I agree, though, that Escobar is his eventual replacement and should be given a fair opportunity to beat him (Witten) out in TC. The key for Escobar is to get stronger this off-season and work on his blocking. I think he has talent.

It'd be nice to think Escobar would be given that chance(along with every backup) but I don't see it happening on this team

I don't disagree with you. As much as I would have wanted Warford, scheme and continuity is much more important on the offensive line than individual talent. The O-line is a unit, a single heartbeat. Bern has a great year and people still want to get rid of him because there are more talent OLmen out there. Well, sure, there are, but are they better for this O-line? We finally got guys understanding this scheme, and we finally got guys who have developed a little continuity with each other, and people want to break it up. I say don't fix something that isn't broken. I don't mind drafting some depth, but I want this starting lineup to be left alone.

I clearly don't want football because I'm questioning your logic? Okay.

Because youre making assumptions about someone you dont even know. That is no way to go through life.
C'mon, youre better than that.

Gonna go ahead and put you on ignore anyway though. There are many like you on that list...

I do agree. Not with you but that our line was legit going into the season. Keep in mind we had holes everywhere and the Dline was a solid area of this team. I knew the last 2 seasons that it would be THIS season that we would go heavy on the defensive line as age and contracts led me to conclude. But I did not know we would have been decimated like we were last season. Here is to hoping that the guys who were injured return in top shape and we get a free agent or two including Spencer as an option (at the right and low price) or get them FAs elseware....yes get rid of Ware. If I know Jery and I do know him. He will get us 2 draft picks and 1 FA to pad the line depth. That would be the most players he will add even with losses at the same. Jerry will fill a speed position on both offense and D. Grab a linebacker and even another TE.

I'm not sure what team you were looking at but Joey nailed it. So you don't remember the Floyd debate? It was mostly predicated around the idea that we had guys moving to a new D that were older and we needed help.

This article was May 8th of last year..read bolded...everyone knew this. The only ones oblivious were the Cowboys

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000167894/article/2013-nfl-draft-fallout-dallas-cowboys

The Cowboys continue to insist that the transition to defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin's 4-3 defense will be smooth. They say their defensive line is a strength. But we were perplexed to see them pass on a great value in Florida defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd in the first round, instead trading down for nasty center Travis Frederick. This partly is why I called 2013 a "no-win" draft for team owner Jerry Jones.

Jay Ratliff hasn't been effective or healthy for two years. He's an overpaid starter. And who is going to start next to him at defensive tackle? Is Jason Hatcher changing to a new position?

The depth at the position seriously is lacking. I'd be worried about the team's run defense. The Cowboys also have a scary lack of depth at the rest of the front seven positions. There was a dramatic defensive change schematically in Dallas this offseason, which usually is followed by adding a lot of new players to fit the new scheme.

Instead, Dallas is counting on all the same players to learn new positions.

Not taking Floyd was, for many, compounded in the later rounds of the draft and the UDFA signings when Dallas did not pick up a single additional defensive lineman. Going into the draft, that was seen by all the experts in the media as one of the top priorities for the Cowboys, and the absolute failure to address that is undoubtedly one of the reasons Dallas is being panned in so many places for its draft (I'm looking at you, Yahoo). Someone made this decision that is going to have a direct effect on implementing the 4-3. You have to wonder who could have saddled Kiffin with this huge burden, right?

Aww somebody's feelings got hurt. I barely said anything and I'm on the ignore list. You're the one who made the assumption (that I clearly don't want football because I disagreed that our DL looked great).

The facts are, anyone with eyes could see Ware hadn't looked like the best pass rusher in football in about 2 years. Hatcher and Spencer were on the final years of their contracts. Ratliff had barely played in 2 years and many people thought he would never play again. Not to mention all the drama he started in the locker room. I would say the DL was completely an issue. But I clearly don't watch football and you probably won't read this post because you put people on your ignore list after the very first post they disagree with you.

Having an ignore list has always fascinated me. I don't even know how to put somebody on an ignore list. And I don't want to know.

People should listen to all views, even if it rubs you the wrong way some times. Make your point. Debate it. Then move on. Easy peasy.

BTW, this is directed to no one in particular.

You probably just earned yourself an ignore from someone. Not me, but someone probably got a little butt hurt.

What does that have to do with anything. You are deflecting on an issue you caught with your pants down on. You said we didn't need Dline help at the time we took Escobar. Wrong. Stop waffling and spinning in circles. I see a lot of that these days with anyone who thinks 3 8-8s is progress and who love JG.

I only have one on it. It helps. There is a difference between healthy debate ad people who only want to write their side and then say "if you don't agree you don't know football" or they just keep moving to other topics after facts ruin their points. At that stage it is a no win situation for all involved
