News: ESPN: Cowboys' DeMarcus Lawrence: I'm better at left defensive end

Larry Warford was quite good, though without the All Pro nod

Sometimes I lay awake at night thinking about what our Line would look like had we drafted Warford instead of Escobar

They are exceptions instead of of what you usually get with rookies. Good oline prospects seem to do better than some other positions. A defensive linemen seem to take longer IMO. I think it is not very wise to think that depend on rookies to make big improvements on the defense in their first year. These picks are going to make a differece later on, but they are not going to upgrade the defense to the point that they won't need the running game to keep them fresh and off the field. The DB situation is so bad that a rookie can upgrade and help.

I'm pretty sure that someone on here told me there was absolutely no way Lawrence could play SDE and that I was crazy for thinking he could switch.

Had some impact rookies last year. Martin looked ok. Hitchens stepped up. And Lawrence came on late.

Shakira looks...eh... OK...:D

Ziggy, Richardson, Short, Mack, Barr have all been highly productive as rookie DLs. That's just in the last two years. I think that meme about rookies is a little bit antiquated. Talent wise I think Gregory is comparable to the guys on that list.

Well, there was also a whole Ron Fields should have been a first round pick thread too. I don't see any rueage from those folks now that he's officially off our radar.

People talk crap like they know what's what. We all think we can coach, scout or GM an NFL team. But we aren't. That's why I only value the opinions of a very select few on here. Because they are the least crazy.

You speak the truth.

Cowboys' DeMarcus Lawrence: I'm better at left defensive end

When the Dallas Cowboys traded up to select defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence in the beginning of the second round in the 2014 NFL Draft, they weren't concerned with which side of the defense he would play on. At the time, Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory weren't on the roster. Both Hardy and Gregory maximize their potential as right defensive ends. After seeing the majority of his snaps at right defensive end in 2014, Lawrence must prepare himself for a new role in 2015.

In anticipation that he will be playing more left defensive end in 2015, Lawrence has gotten his weight up to 260 pounds. He believes that the transition could end up making him a more effective pass rusher.

“I feel like I get off way better on my left side, keeping my right hand down,” Lawrence said...

ESPN?

Going against RT's instead of LT's should certainly help

He is way too slow to play the right side. I was really angry when we picked him in the 2nd and introduced him as a pass rushing DE. His lack of quickness was already known in his college carrer.

But i do think he could pan out at LDE or occasionally at the 1-tech. He already bulked up a bit. With Gregory at RDE we could have a nice pair of ends for years to come.

I am liking these rookie and second year defensive players, but I don't think the rookies will have much impact at all. It is rare for rookies to make much of s difference .

Not really, there are lots of rookies who have had immediate impact. WR, RB, LB mainly make the most impact in their rookie year.

I don't know why, but I chuckled at this.

I'd be happy with that type of production from him, assuming he's going to be sharing a lot of snaps with Hardy, Mincey, and Gregory.

I think he'll get 6 at least. Hardy wont play for at least 6 weeks.

Lawrence isn't the edge rusher that Gregory is and doesn't have the bend he does either. But he is a very solid edge rusher IMO. He's more JPP than Ware. Gregory is the opposite. Hardy is a bigger Lawrence. You will see those guys rotate the pass rush and occasionally see them all in on passing downs in different formations.

Martin was great, but he was the exception. As a rule rookies usually flash talent , but they don't become that productive until the second or more likely, the third year.

I don't see that. Typically, you get some really good rookie players all over the NFL. Last year, for example, in addition to Martin you had guys like Chris Borland and Mike Evans, and ODB, and Aaron Donald and Barr and Corey Fuller. Jernigan and Ellis in OAK were both contributors and both added after the 1st round. WAS picked up that middle round CB who was really good in the games we played them. And that OC that the stupid Packers picked up. Derek Carr looked like a keeper, too.

Just for the Cowboys last year, both Martin and Hitchens did more than flash. Martin was All Pro and Hitchens played all three LB positions and a fairly high level, including calling plays for the entire defense for a couple of games. The year before both Frederick and Williams gave us instant lift. Other players like Randle and Lawrence and Escobar from recent drafts are flashing talent and just coming into their own (hopefully) after a year or two on the roster. I agree that that obviously happens, too, but I think most of us would say at this early point that we've got higher expectation for the top three or four players in this incoming class than we did in either 2013 or 2014. I see no reason not to expect an immediate contribution from several of them.
