26 years old and not that expensive....what do we have to lose?

Nothing to really lose, but what is the rush. He is not a first day of free agency signing type player.

I guess this may be the "surprise" at running back Jerry was talking about.

The problem was that JJ was our starting running back. Bell will be the back-up, change of pace guy.

I would definately take him on the cheap....it would be a prudent move by the Boys as long as they draft another.

Tatum Bell and Julius Jones are the same back. Good speed, not a lot of wiggle in tight spaces and not a lot of power.

Who hasn't gained a 1000 yards in Denver's system? It doesn't seem like that big of an accomplishment and Julius also gained 1000 yards in 2006.

Tatum Bell
1 fumble for every 58.6 touches

Julius Jones
1 fumble for every 121.0 touches

I don't think Tatum is a bad back just like I don't think Julius is a bad back. Is Dallas looking for an upgrade or just someone to replace Julius? Tatum is not an upgrade.
If the stats about the funbles is true, I say re-sign Julius and see if Houck can get this line is to run block a little better. Once upon a time Julius was pretty good for us (before Larry Allen was run-off)...

He can replace Tyson Thompson...because I hope we get another back in the draft to work with Marion.

The only way I like this is if he's relegated to a #3 back. If so, I welcome it.

Dallas is looking for a happier version of Julius more so than a better one. A guy who can return kick offs and spell Barber without feeling the need to be the man.

Julius was furious when he didn't start.

I still think a rookie is the way to go.

i would rather have a guy like mewelde moore. better runner, better reciever, more help on special teams. but i guess you can't be all that picky at 3rd rb spot

When Jerry said how we're filling RB might be a "surprise" ... I had a feeling he meant a low tier FA who was off everyone's radar.

He does have a nice career ypc, but I hope he has gotten over his fumble problems. That was the main reason Denver shipped him off.

It would be comforting to have ONE vet on the roster behnd MBIII that has carried part of an NFL workload in the past.

I've been suggesting this move for several weeks. He's cheap. He burst several long runs two seasons ago. He should be a good change of pace back for MBIII. We don't have to reach for a scat back in the first round and can instead draft a Kevin Smith, Ray Rice or Tashard Choice in the 3rd or 4th.

Yeah, I would like that better too. I want a third guy who is a punt returner or a KR. Moore is a pretty good punt returner but has not done much as a KR.

As deep as the RB pool is this year, I would like to see us draft one on the first day.

Exactly. We have a quality starter in Barber. We can draft a nice compliment. But a veteran backup RB is probably a good idea too, in case Barber misses some time.

I am all for this if its a good deal. And he is being brought in as a change of pace/backup RB type and not someone to split carries with.
