ARLINGTON, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant wants to be paid what he believes he deserves, but he plans to table his contract negotiations with the team if he doesn't have a new deal by the beginning of the regular season.

"I don't want to talk about it anymore," Bryant said Monday evening after an event to announce the Cowboys' corporate sponsorship deal with Swiss luxury watch company Hublot. "Put it behind me. I love this game. Either way, I feel like I can't be distracted once I'm on the football field."

Bryant, who is due to be paid $1.78 million this season in the final year of his rookie deal, and agent Eugene Parker have been in discussions with the Cowboys about a lucrative, long-term extension for months.

The sides were not close to an agreement as the Cowboys opened training camp. But Bryant believes progress has been made and said there's a "big chance" a deal could be struck before the Cowboys open the season Sept. 7 against the San Francisco 49ers.

"We're in conversation," Bryant said. "I'll say that. We're talking. We are talking. It only gets better from there. Let's see what happens."

Added owner and general manager Jerry Jones: "He obviously feels in the right circumstances he wants to get something done. We do, too. That can be good."

If the money is right that contract could be signed at anytime. I really don't believe that bull that Harbaugh is dishing in SF either.

While I don't think it will be a distraction my preferance would be for this to get done ASAP. It's going to cost whatever it's going to cost the Cowboys and I don't see where either side has anything to gain putting this off until the off season. I love love love the thought of him being a Cowboys for many more years.

I think they should try to get it done now.

Not only does he looked primed to go off which may move the asking price, but the team has the cap space and his cap charge is so unbelievably low right now.

Get as much of the guaranteed money out of the picture as quickly as possible. Use this season to take the hit for part of his signing bonus proration so in the 5th year of the new deal he doesn't have any signing bonus money on board and his cap charge can come down a bit just as he hits 30 years old.

there is actually no incentive for Dallas to get this done now. Dez is getting his money one way or another. I would even go as far to say even if Dez had an average year (which i highly doubt) he will still get top 3 money. Dallas has leverage here and should table this discussion until after the season to make sure there are no back issues from Dez this year.

Or they could put wording in the contract regarding injury so the team isn't left in a bad spot.

Not being able to spread the contract over an additional year isn't an incentive?

Sign him now or sign him next year, even if the price is exactly the same, signing him now allows the team to use this season to bring his average cap charge down in subsequent years.

They bump his base by $6M this year and they've basically cut $1M off his base salary for 6 years into the future. That's not incentive?

If his SB was $10M, $2M goes on this year and when year 5 of the new contract comes and he's 5 years older with more wear and tear, his cap charge drops $2M compared to the previous year. That's not incentive?

If he signed for the exact same amount now or next year, year 5 of the contract if it were done now with $10M SB would have a cap charge $3M lower than if he signed for the same next offseason.

If the back is a concern now, it's always going to be a concern and the team shouldn't sign him to a longterm deal at all. Franchise him twice at higher cap charges and let him go.

that's actually what I would do but I really think Dallas wants to resign him. The savings you mentioned are not significant enough to rush and do the deal. This will be monster contract and Dallas has really been on the wrong side of these lately and might just want to sit back and let it play out further.

Show him the money!

Show him a trade. Two 1sts would get us 3 new starting defenders next year. A smart GM would not payout to this position the megadeal that will be asked for. Or tag him 2015 & 2016 then trade

We play hardball with the one guy on our team who "gets it" and has actually earned every dime he's going to get.

I don't understand, is the FO holding out on paying him what he wants hoping he has an injury this year so that his price lowers? The guy is a bonafide superstar and the best thing that's happened to this team in 20 years, pay him.

The incentive for Dallas is to not have their best player go into the season questioning his future with the team, because it will become a distraction. Dez is a guy who believes in loyalty, he sees everyone else around him who has been taken care of and you don't think he's asking himself what the hell is going on with this team not paying me?

Hell no. You're gonna trade our bonafide all pro wr for 2 1st and we have no guarantee either of them sniff Dez production? No thanks to that "smart GM" move

Exactly. They better get it done.
