Huh? Nash has a 3 year fully guaranteed contract. We are talking about the team they will have in 3 years time. When Kobe and Gasol roll off the books. Nash and DH are still there.
That means nothing. If Nash doesn't feel like he is going to be in it for a Championship in L.A., he will either force a trade or retire. That is not hard to figure out. No Huh factor in it.
Nash is not giving up 9 million dollars.
Nash gave up much more then that just to play in L.A. He could have played for much more elsewhere but he wanted to be in L.A. because of the proximity of his children. Nash is not in it for the money IMO.
Yes, they have a realistic 2 year window which may be a 1 year window if DH starts slow and the lack of depth holds them back this year. Like the Heat even with talent you need time to gel.
I don't think their depth is all that terrible. I think they need more outside shooting but other then that, they are OK IMO.
They are very talented in that front 5 to be sure. If DH is healthy they are going to be a tough out for anyone in basketball.
I agree with this. He is the key because he is going to be the defensive stopper for this team. Kobe is an excellent defensive player. Gasol is a pretty good defensive player. World Piece is probably the best defensive player at his position in the league. Nash is not a very good defensive player and if Howard comes back in shape, well, clearly he is the best defensive big man in the league. The Lakers could be a very strong defensive team this year but you are right, it all depends on DH coming back healthy.
But they are no where near a dynasty with all that age and lack of depth.
They are not a Dynasty because they haven't won with this group. Then again, nobody has said they are. Certainly not I. However, the age of this group may or may not be a factor. That remains to be seen.
How much money they have coming off the books is irrelevant. What matter is how much cash they have ON the books. And the way the cap works they won't have tons of free cap space unless they sign no one to play with DH in 2015 or do a bunch of 1 year rentals a la Dallas.
No. This is the Lakers and while I understand what you are saying, if the Lakers believe they can win, they will pay the Luxury Tax penalty. I am surprised that anybody would even question that having seen it happen so many times over the years. There is no hard cap in the NBA so I am not entirely sure what you mean by "the way the cap works".
Kobe is not going to play much longer. He may play 2 years or he may play 4 but either way, he is only going to play for as long as he can play at a high level and can be in contention for a championship. Once he retires, money is going to come off the books and that means that a significant amount of cap will not be ON the books.
But before any of that matters they gotta go out and play this year and hope Emo-man doesn't flip out and walk in free agency. If he does they will have tons of cap space in 2015 but much bigger problems to worry about.
That can be said for about 70% of all players in any major sport. That's nothing new to any Pro Team anywhere in sports. However, I agree, they have to do that but so do all the teams in the NBA.
