What the Lakers have done now is completed the holy trinity of basketball positions -- distributing point guard, elite swingman, and elite post player.
Building off of those three players they have a tough defender in Ron Artest as well as another elite post player in Pau Gasol.
They have improved their bench with Antawn Jamison, who will be able to probably provide 15-18 solid minutes per night.
Also, Nash will be able to better get the ball to guys like Dwight, Gasol, and Bryant where they like to get the ball and where works within their game -- something that Gary Payton didn't do as a veteran PG when the Lakers added him back in '02 (?).
At any rate I think they got a lot better. They still aren't young and fast like OKC, but Dwight in the middle with Gasol will help to contest a lot of those paint points and easy layups that OKC got which was ultimately the Lakers' demise. I wouldn't go so far as to call them favorites in the West, because I think the Thunder will come back even better and more mature this year (Westbrook pending) but to simply wave the Lakers away as "they're still not good enough" is foolish.
