ESPN: Jason Garrett's Staying!

Of course, Jones’ other option is to fire Phillips right now. But why pay him $3 million not to work in 2008 when Wade can essentially serve as head coach-defense while Garrett serves as head coach-offense?

That is still an option. But it doesn't make sense to fire him, unless for some unannounced reason, that is the reason Garrett stayed.

Well they just went 13-3 in Wade's first season as a lame duck.

So we've heard. Made a nice first round exit too.

This would really be the best case scenario, if this could happen for the next 3-4 years. Because we're not going to find a defensive mind like Wade's any time soon.

I think equivalent is Wade has been put on super secret double probabation. What did Jerry do or say to keep Garrett other than give him money, because he would have gotten paid regardless. Or maybe Garrett is just biding his time until one of the New York jobs open up.

I think most understand that Jerry would like to have Garrett one day to become the next HC but I think that has been known since the day Jason entered Valley Ranch. Jerry showed his support of Wade by coming out and saying look I want Jason and will do what I can short of firing Wade. That does not sound like a lame duck to me or lack of faith in Wade.

GARRETT TO MAKE MORE THAN WADE?

A league source tells us that Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett will earn $3.5 million to $4 million per year as part of a four-year contract to stay with the team.

That’s clearly the richest deal for any NFL assistant coach, and substantially more than many head coaches.

Said one source, “Garrett and [agent David] Dunn used the Ravens to drum up the price. In the end, Garrett wanted more money than the chance to be a head coach.”

As a result, champagne corks are surely flying throughout the league as head coaches and assistants anticipate the rising salary tide.

In Dallas, the problem is that Garrett could now be making more money than Phillips, who reportedly gets only (only?) $3 million per year.

Then again, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones might give Wade a raise for 2008 in order to allow the head coach to save face. But that could only increase the chance that Phillips will get fired after the coming season. Really, why pay two head coaches when a team only needs one?

Of course, Jones’ other option is to fire Phillips right now. But why pay him $3 million not to work in 2008 when Wade can essentially serve as head coach-defense while Garrett serves as head coach-offense?

And, frankly, we don’t rule out the Cowboys aligning the two coaches with joint head-coaching titles. What better way for Jones to make it known to the world that he’s the guy who ultimately runs the show

Who doesn't already know this?

The question is what is the bare minimum Wade has to do to keep his job next year? I'm not sure winning just one playoff game will do it.

No faith in Stewart?

The difference is that people don't like Wade, and they love Jason.

I wonder, if Jason had been named head coach this year and we'd gotten exactly the same results, would everyone want Jason's head on a platter? Or would they see that in fact this was the best team we've had in years here and say we're on the right track?

Pretty sure I know the answer.

It all depends on what happens during that process. If Wade makes a boneheaded decision (like Joe Gibbs) or if the defense falls apart, then yeah, even one win might not save him. But if it's like this year where the defense is playing strong at the end of the season and in the playoff game and the offense is the one sucking it up, then I can't imagine him being fired after getting us to the NFCCG.

None whatsoever.

If the Cowboys gutlessly choked in the playoffs like they did this year, there would be hell to pay no matter who is coach. Wade said the Cowboys were his dream job ... well, it's not all traveling on Lear Jets and shooting Pepsi Commercials.

Not bad for a lame duck though.

I didn't think he was a lame duck this past season. I don't know what next season will bring when players know they have a one season HC. I think that's
what most guys are talking about.

This doesn't seem right. Because it was the offense that choked. Yet people are calling for Garrett to get the HC position.

And fans like the backup QB on teams as well. I understand the frustration and fans reaching for every excuse under the sun as to why we lost and as HC Wade will take the heat it goes with the job. My only concern is what this organization does and Jerry stepped out and showed his support for Wade I was glad to see that.

Well there was that 45 or so seconds at the end of the first half.;)

You don't have faith in Stewart, but you do in Phillips. Phillips, the guy who has always had good defenses, but his defenses have always had flaws and tend to breakdown as the year goes on. They did this year, and they did last year with the highly touted Chargers defense who was #1 for a long time and then drop to 10th in the blink of an eye then took a one and gone in the playoffs just like the Cowboys did.

I like them both. I am glad they are both back.

I think garret made a mistake not taking the baltimore job, but we dont know the details so really none of us should be allowed to have much of a comment. I think working with a guy like ozzie newsome would be something I would love to do as a coach. They have their act together in the front office there.

Jason Garrett will always be given preferential treatment in this city because he is part of the 90s teams. He is family here. When he is head coach he will get all kinds of leverage and time and that is a good thing.

Hopefully wade will be here for two more years and then garrett maybe for the next 10. It would be great to have a guy in place for years.

They both choked. One did it at the end of the first half. Allowing a TD in 43s, 7 plays, in 70+ yards at the end of the first half exemplifies choking. One did at the end of the game, which is a much more difficult situation to not choke in. Some people wouldn't consider it choking at all.

The head coach is always the first one in the cross hairs. That's just the job.

I also disagree that people hate Wade Phillips. Cowboy fans and Dallas media rolled out the red carpet for him when he arrived. Wade was "just what we needed" for 8 months here. The media were slapping knees at all his "hilarious" zingers at his press conferences. They love you when you win and hate you when you lose.
