He's certainly worth investigating.
Jabaal Sheard actually played 4-3 LDE with the Browns during his first two seasons.
He moved to 3-4 ROLB in 2013 and has played on both sides this season.
I'd rather go after other DE options, but if Brian Orakpo will sign a "prove it" contract similar to Henry Melton's, it'd be a good signing.
Some team will probably offer up more up front money than we can stomach.
Yep...my mistake. As a rookie he actually spent most of the camps they had & their first regular season game at RDE (with the offseason being shortened by the lockout)...then moved to LDE in week 2. And as you mentioned, he played ROLB in the 3-4 in 2013...where he had 5.5 sacks despite making the transition, missing 3 games, switching sides, and rotating with Mingo (their 2013 1st rd. pick).
What's impressive about his rookie season is that the lockout happened so he lost valuable offseason time as all rookies did, there were really no solid vet DE's on the roster to help him, and he shifted from right to left...yet he had 55 tackles, 8.5 sacks, & 5 forced fumbles.
I think that Sheard could play either side in Marinelli's system. But LDE is of course an area of need if they wanted to play him there...particularly given the lack of production, the fact that Selvie & Spencer are impending UFA's, etc.
Agreed about Orakpo...would rather go after other options as well. But as you mentioned, a 'prove it' deal similar to Melton's could be a good signing.
Excluding resigning any of the UFA's (Selvie, Spencer, Hayden), picking up Melton's option, or any draft additions...with adding Sheard, the DL could look like.....
LDE: Sheard, Ben Gardner, Lavar Edwards, Jack Crawford
DT1: Brent, Bishop, T. McClain, Okoye
DT3: Crawford, Coleman, T. McClain, Okoye, Chris Whaley, Jack Crawford
RDE: Lawrence, Mincey, Boatright
