I dont think the on field product has much to do with the cowboys success any more. The brand is a self sustaining machine. As for sam. Its definitely a football move, but if you want to think its marketing, feel free.

Gee, I wonder if this has anything to do with Demarcus Lawrence getting hurt..

Why didn't they draft him if they liked him so much?

This season is headed for a train wreck and all Jerry is trying to do is line up his cards so he can sell something to the fans to come see.

I think he has great potential to be a contributor on the 53-man roster but I fear the media will never allow his performance to out weigh his sexual orientation. They will never see him as a player first, that just so happens to be gay.

They obviously dont like him "so much". Isnt he like the 12th guy theyve put on the practice squad?

The article says why. If you have another source that says Dallas was/is enamored with Sam, please share it.

I'm not unhappy in the least about Sam coming to Dallas but something just doesn't seem right about it to me. Dallas officials have been quoted numerous times before and after the draft stating that Sam wasn't a fit for their defense. Just a day or two ago they signed the 9th and 10th player to the practice squad all the while Sam was available. Now, all of a sudden they are interested and are willing to release someone to bring him in? I could be totally wrong and this could have 100% come from coaches and staff deciding he is a better football player than someone on the PS and deciding to take the chance but I can't help but wonder if someone from the league didn't call Jerry and convince him to do this pointing out Sam's strong jersey sales and maybe offering some other incentives like reducing Brent's suspension on appeal. It just seems to me that Sam was never in their plans and all of a sudden when the league started taking heat for him being unemployed, Dallas became interested. Is that just a coincidence?

I see some criticism on this matter and here's my take.

We drafted a WDE in Lawrence
We signed 1DT McClain
We signed 3DT in Melton
Added plenty of new options for the SDE spot.
We added LB's in Toomer, Hitchens and McClain.

The FO is trying. Adding Sam doesn't hurt. Can anyone name a WDE that's available who registered 3 sacks this preseason in limited play time? Once Lawrence comes back Sam will provide quality depth behind him.

No. Nobody knows anything before it happens. The media reports it just like they report everything else. What kind of question was that?

My point was, and it could certainly have been worded better, did the media report Dallas was in talks with him before he was on the way. And if not, how do you know other teams weren't talking to him as well?

That's exactly it. One great game and three awful ones.

Minter had the great game against the Ravens, no showed against Miami and a decent game against the Broncos. No need to exaggerate.

Even Stephen A. Smith pointed out that the league had been pushing the idea very strongly for some team to pick Sam up, not necessarily the Cowboys, but this was not a football move IMO.

Why are you worked up over a PS player?

Wait... I just realized something. Jerry said that Sam (261lbs) wasn't big enuff to be an every down DE in the league but then drafts Lawrence (251 lbs).. ??? I'm not a fan of Sam but because of his speed so this struck me as double speak... anyone else?

There are no everydown DLmen anymore.

Every team uses a rotation of 8-11 players deep substituting all the time depending on down, distance and field position.

Jerrah is right.

Nevermind

Nevermind this link!

http://thesportscrave.com/nfl-officials-asked-teams-to-consider-signing-michael-sam-8358

It seems my instinct was dead on which it usually is but nevermind. Dallas signed 10 players to the practice squad all while Sam was available to them. Then a league official calls and convinces Jerry to sign him. In doing so, they cut Will Smith, a player they had graded higher in the draft and a player they obviously liked better than Sam because they signed him while Sam was available but before a league official got in Jerry's ear, just as I surmised but again nevermind.

So why doesn't Zach Minter make sense for the Cowboys? Cowboys need pass rushers and Minter led the Cowboys in sacks in preseason with 3 just like Sam.

He got an injury settlement which makes him unavailable to the Cowboys for 6 weeks plus the time period of the settlement.

It's not his choice. You're" saying he turned down all those other phantom offers?

Yes, it would be his choice if he had more than 1 Practice Squad offer. Waivers don't apply to the PS.

Aren't players free agents when they aren't claimed on waivers? (thought i read that somewhere on here) If so, he could have had other offers.

Yes, and waiver claims are only for the 53 man roster, not the PS.
