IRVING, Texas -- Signing Michael Sam to the practice squad is a move that makes perfect football sense for the Dallas Cowboys. Forget about the fact that Sam is seeking to become the first openly gay NFL player. If the Cowboys aren't mature enough to handle that, they're doomed anyway. So what if Sam gets more attention than any other practice-squad player? If anything, it's a bonus for owner and general manager Jerry Jones, who loves when the Cowboys are in the news and jerseys are being sold.

I don't see him playing on the practice squad long. It was basically a coin flip between him and Westbrooks. If he almost made the best DL in the NFL, no way he doesn't crack our DL. I'm very excited. He'll end up being a great rotational player in this league. I think he makes a good contribution this season.

For sure..

they need pass rush right now and a rotation guy.

Let's see what happens.

The risk is minimal.

Yea I expect him to be starting in a few weeks with how awful our D-line is.

Wait... I just realized something. Jerry said that Sam (261lbs) wasn't big enuff to be an every down DE in the league but then drafts Lawrence (251 lbs).. ??? I'm not a fan of Sam but because of his speed so this struck me as double speak... anyone else?

Jerry has always been a master of the double speak so it is not a shock.

No problem with this at all. He's a football player who is a gamer. We need gamers.

Lawrence is a weak side edge rusher and they like how strong he plays when it is a run. I have only seen Sam used on the strong side (where DEs are generally bigger) so it appears they think he doesn't have the quickness to play the weakside (against LTs) and are afraid he is too small to ever be able to stand up against the run.

He could always learn to chew glass...

This will go down as one of our strongest moves of this particular season. Glad to see everyone starting to warm up to actually having a healthy NFL caliber DE on the roster.

If the Rams thought he was a NFL caliber DE right now I doubt they release him, even with having a good line. There's a reason he's being signed to the practice squad and not to the 53 man. He's a reasonable gamble because we are literally risking nothing other then a few weeks of a practice squad spot which is basically nothing.
