Since an pro athlete's playing days are somewhat limited in terms of years I cannot fathom anyone willing to lose millions of dollars.
Another way of looking at it: is Bryant so obsessed with breaking the bank as a testament to himself (and all the little birdies he listens to) that he's willing to alienate his teammates and potentially cost them games? Players will avoid talking about each other's "business" but I can't imagine that a large percentage of Cowboys are not wondering why a gigantic contract isn't gigantic enough for Bryant. More money for him means less money for everyone else...
I think that's why he is getting his threats out in the media right now. They have about a month to go to negotiate a new deal. He has zero real leverage, so he is doing the best he can by threatening a hold out.I don't think he even understands how the rules work at this point and how holding out would be of zero benefit. Once the July 15th deadline to negotiate a new contract has passed, somebody will explain it to him.
They should be pushing him to play not hold out. If they are all that, then he should be able to make so much in marketing that his contract should not be that big of an issue.
They know he's going to eventually sign. This is they're way of getting more publicity which helps in marketing him.
I have been staying out of all this pretty much... but to me, it seems like a bad idea to play hardball with a guy because you know he loves the game and his team so much that you don't think he will skip any time.
Just find a middle ground and make a deal. Of course unreasonable demands would change that but we don't know if Dez has those or not.
Many of the local media here in DFW think they offered him about 12M per year. A contract averaging 12.1M per year would make him the 2nd highest paid WR in the NFL. Those same media believe that he wants 16M per year or more. If the franchise him for 2 years, he that would average out to 14M per year.
I don't think the problem is the team.
Overpaying them is what Jerry would have done in the past. If you didn't notice, Jerry's method didn't work out too well.
What we're seeing the past couple of years is the Stephen Jones method, that so far the results have been very good.
You may be right... like I said, I've been kind of staying out of this one. Still, if they're thinking they don't have to negotiate with him because he loves the team and playing football so much, then that seems like the wrong direction to take. One of the things that makes him so great is that love of football along his loyalty to team mates.
It is highly likely that a top agent like Condon told them to stay out of the contract negotiation side of things when he agreed to be a co-representative.
He can tell them but they don't have to listen.

People need to remember, that some players have the mentality of a 12 year old, not and adult.
Call his bluff and suspend him for 2 weeks after week 1.
Just lost $2.5M, care to skip out on any more games?
Dez wants the 130 mil not the 12 mil, and he wants to have his cake and eat it too.
He wants the 130 mil , no telling how much Guaranteed, and to play for cowboys, and no babysitting clauses in contract.
Last year a deal was done before the season, and dez did not like the babysitting clauses in contract, so he did not sign.
That led to losing murray who could have been franchised, and the current situation.
All over the off field clauses that were there to protect cowboys if he got into trouble, and maybe some monitoring was still involved , like being driven to meetings and practice.
So the money was there last year but dez turned it down over off field issues.
He is not the angel or loyal player people may think he is and he may indeed sit out some games, he wants it all or he wont play.
From what I heard he can miss many games and still get paid, he just has to play a certain # of games and he gets paid for whole season.
He is a lawyer. It would have been in a contract. There is no doubt that a top agent like Condon would have had a long detailed contract before he entered into a deal to represent a player when another agency was involved in representing him also. The boundaries would be strictly defined.
