So Emmitt is also not a team player with a team attitude correct? Neither is Drew Brees I take it...

There was no salary cap in '92.

And look at what Brees' contract has done to the Saints franchise from the point of having to either let talented players walk or trade them away, so I that sense Brees was not a "team player".

I'm always of the mindset that if I was JJ and he came to me and said, "pay me or I'm sitting game one" I'd retort with, "enjoy the game. Don't bully me son, you'll get your money but these empty threats are only making your situation worse."

Players who threaten to sit if they don't get a deal can sit the whole damn season out of principle. The Cowboys would find a way to win without him.

You think the other players wouldnt be affected by his absence?

Look. Dez is upset. He is venting. You guys remember Peterson going on his twitter rampage one day and then the next day saying he was reporting to camp?

Dez needed to vent. Better he do it now than later. He probably REALLY wants to be at Minicamp and knows that he can't if he wants a new contract and its probably PISSING him off.

Obviously he wants to get a deal done and so he is pressing for negotiations. Its pretty clear that the Jones' have not been trying to close a deal. Dez wants them to negotiate.

I would not at all be surprised if this doesn't lead to a deal soon where both sides meet in the middle.

Doesn't matter. The point is he sat out two games over money when his team needed him. Salary cap is irrelevant. So if Dez is not a team player by sitting out neither is Emmitt.

I like Todd Archer's take on this. He basically says that the Cowboys know they have him for the next two years. They're more than happy to keep him under the tag for two years as opposed to signing him to a bad deal. It sucks in some ways, see Demarco Murray, but the team is sticking to a new organizational philosophy. Either a team friendly deal or no deal.

On a side note, I read the article about Gregory and it says that "Marinelli, who owns a Ph.D. in football technique"....

Where do you get a Ph.D in football technique, or was that said tongue in cheek?

dez may miss the team he may miss practice but more than any thing he wants the money if its in dallas or somewhere else don't matter tohim as long a he gets his money they can all say how they wantto be a cowboy but when it comes ot the money that's most important he has to only play six games to get credit for the year, butif he holds out that long his time in dallas will be over basicallly

Tagging him for two years for 28m is just taking a bad deal early in the contract instead of later.

With a long-term deal his cap hit would total 16m for the next 2 years. That 12m can be spent on a 2-3 good players.

It was like taking a 28m cap hit on Romo this year just to avoid a possible 19m cap hit in 2017 if things went horrible.

Everybody getting mad at Dez like he hasn't earned his check or doesnt deserve to do what it takes to get his check; and yet here's Carr cashing 7th highest paid CB in league money

Dez and his agent should know our cap situation, which is the ONLY thing keeping us from giving him a big deal right now.

I will make no excuses for his behavior if he sits. If he truly does sit, which I don't think he will, it's time to move on. You're not earning **** with your *** on the bench. The franchise tag, when signed, is guaranteed money and a lot of it. We placed the tag on him, sign the damn tag and go earn your paycheck.

I can see both sides of the argument here...................

For the Cowboys, they can tag Dez two consecutive seasons before they have to let him walk (to use the tag a 3rd time you have to pay the franchise QB tag regardless of position, kinda a poison pill the NFLPA put in the CBA to make sure 2 tags was the max a non-QB would ever get). So they can make Dez play the next 2 seasons under the tag and there is not a dam thing Dez can do about it. The team might be thinking that Romo has probably 2 good seasons left before he is done and once Romo is gone, we are going to suck so we don't need a $15 million a season WR for a rookie QB to throw to. I can understand that line of thinking and that might be the reluctance to give Dez a 6 or 7 year deal for over $100 million.

For Dez perspective, he is playing basically on a series of one year deals with back to back tags. Obviously no player wants to do this, just look at Spencer. He was tagged, blew out his knee, and had to sign for vet min the following season. This is obviously the nightmare scenario for a high dollar free agent playing on the tag. So the only leverage that Dez has is to withhold his playing ability from the team in an effort to force them to sign him to a long term deal. The problem I see with this is that after July, no team can sign a franchise player to a long term deal so holding out when the season starts accomplishes nothing because the team could not give Dez a long term deal at that point even if they wanted to. I am not sure that Dez and his agent realize this.

One last point..................I hate to say it, but this also could be related to the Demarco Murray situation. Dez really liked "De Mo" as he always would call him and Dez even tweeted Irvin when Murray signed with the Eagles and asked Irvin "what the hell are we doing here?". My point is that when the team makes a "business decision" and lets a very popular player walk due to money, it is hard to turn around and then ask other players to take "team friendly" deals. I am just saying that Dez is probably thinking that "business decisions" cut both ways. If they would not pay Murray after their best season in forever, then Dez might be thinking "why the hell should I take less money, I am going to get mine". Dez was pretty upset Murray left, just saying.

Am I missing something or is he "protesting" by completely giving money away at that point?

Players like long term deals because it gives them security. Is it so hard to see this from the player's perspective and realize that if Dez has an injury or a down year, it'll be used as leverage to minimize his earning power?

Furthermore, our cap situation would be better if Dez was on a long term deal, not worse. This is why Jerry & Stephen keep saying that they are comfortable with Dez play on the tag this year: they built their plans around it from the start.

Well, twords the end, that's all he had. Personal goals. The team stunk. When the team was a real contender he was a battering ram and a gazelle. His personal goals excelled because of his team mindset.
Players like Dez don't come around every to your team. They need to take the same risk they took when they drafted him and pay him. He's a fiery leader who makes the team better. Get it done.

I always thought--other than a few exceptions--that Emmitt was all about Emmitt.
Always talking more about personal goals than team goals and very interested in the cash. Frequently running out of bounds to avoid injury except for extreme critical situations(which in the end may have been smart).
I do NOT blame him. But that was my impression
It worked for him and it did work out for the team.... so good for him.
