ESPN's Todd McShay said on SportsCenter Friday that he's heard rumblings around the league that the Rams are angling to trade up for the No. 9 overall pick in the draft.
The point would be to move ahead of the Commanders, whom everyone now seems to think will draft Alabama WR Julio Jones. The Rams, of course, would love Jones to add an explosive, big-play element to their offense. Frankly, we're not buying it in the least. The price to move from No. 14 to No. 9 would be at least a 2011 third-round pick, and St. Louis has one of the NFL's weakest rosters. That third-rounder they'd be giving up would probably be a Week 1 starter. They're hardly Julio Jones away from being an NFC contender.

I think the rams would be very smart in aggresivley moving up for this guy.He and Bradford could become one of the most lethal hookups in the league.

I especially do not want washington to get him either. I think when we look back in a few years we will be stunned this kid wasn't the top WR to be picked . He's a beast.

I'd drop to 14 for this deal and a 3rd. You can still get an O-lineman or a DE type player.

We drop five spots and miss out on possibly the top OT and DE in the draft for a 3rd round pick? I'm not sold.

I'd be careful...but depending on how the draft is falling, I'd be up for it too. Maybe for a 2nd and a 5th rounder. Then use that third to move up from our 2nd rounder if needed to grab two early starters.

Julio Jones would be an awesome pick for them. I think they're worried that Washington will grab him before 14.

Bottom line would be how the draft is going. I'd hate to get cute and lose out on true value...we don't get to pick this early all that often.

Green Bay gave up 175 points in their trade to NE that landed them Matthews.

Given how good Matthews is, NE shouldn't have made the trade. Matthews was, in retrospect, a top ten draft prospect.

That would be a beneficial move for both teams...

I think Julio Jones is gonna be a big time star in this league... keep him away from the skins...

No, if they want to move up you make them give you 1st, 3rd, and 4th picks.

You would take a loss with just the 1st (1,100), and 3rd (200). 1,300. The Cowboys pick is worth 1,350. The Rams' 4th round pick is worth 70. Cowboys would get +20 so that the rams could pick ahead of the Commanders. No way they take -50 to move back.

At that point, you might be able to trade down again with NE.
NE 1st (17th): 950
NE 1st (28th): 660
Total: 1610

Cowboys 1st (from rams) 1,100
Cowboys 2nd (40th) 500
Total: 1,600

So, NE 17th and 28th overall picks for Cowboys 14th and 40th overall picks. Cowboys could toss in both 7th round picks to even out the 10. (NE would probably do force that)

With that you might get Pouncy and a RT.

My point, without the system above is that I'm torn on any of the guys like Watt, Jordan, and Pouncy. Suffice it to say one of them should be there at 14 instead of 9. Same with O-lineman. I like Smith but wouldn't mind Costonzo either lower down. From a pure talent standpoint I don't think they are missing on much. On the other side of things I've seen 2 new mocks having Peterson drop to 7...if that happens I might spend to move up.

But I like the way you think with the NE picks.

Im cool with a trade down just don't do it if that means you're missing out on a Pro Bowl player.

If you think Tyron Smith is the next big thing in this league at Tackle than just pull the trigger on that.

The 3rd round kinda sucks this year anyways.

Probably a 1,3, and 5.

I'd hope we'd use our 4th to move back up around 11 to grab Tyron if we view him as a Bigtime prospect.

I think it would make more sense if you traded our 1st (9) for the Rams 1st (14th), 3rd (78) and a 2012 3rd round pick. That would allow us to improve the pick, give us leverage with an extra pick in 2012 and still give the Rams the ability to take much needed players this year. Basically, that helps the Rams in that they only lose one pick this year.

I would think so too. If they're desperate for a specific player, they'll pay a little more.

Plus, if the rookie scale comes back and makes those top 10 picks cheaper you might have teams willing to give up a little more pick-wise.

I don't think the authors point about being a Julio Jones away from starting is a legitimate point.

It's not about trying to contend, it's about protecting their QB investment and giving their franchise pick a WR he can work with.

In all honesty, I think it would be a GREAT move for the STL if all they gave up was a 3rd rounder in order to complete their own little "triplet".

If Dallas is open for that trade why not continue going down the first and gather more picks? After about 12 their really isn't much left other than DE's like cameron Jordan and maybe watt or Ot's like Constanzo and Carimi which you can probaly get a little later in the first. Worse case scenario you end up with Pouncey and maybe Watkins in the second.

In all honesty, I'd rather Dallas trade up than acquire more picks.

We've seen what the carpet-bombing effect can produce. Whole bunch of a guys you have to cut later.

Bundle up and get a guy you think is a star.

Exactly. Or just make a minor move back if thats what you really want to do.

Dropping all the way to 14 for just a 3 would be a complete win for St. Louis.

I tend to lean this way myself.

If we think Smith is going to be a great tackle then pull the trigger. I'm down to trade up and get Peterson too, I hope we aren't picking in the top 10 for a long time so take advantage of this opportunity.

If the Rookie Salary cap gets put in place its gonna cost a lot more than a 3rd to move up to No 9 form No 14.
