watched today's games and was not as impressed by any side.

spain looked like a brazilian side on downers. always one step too slow pulling the trigger after some brilliant attacking to get chances.

italy looked neutered minus balotelli. he might be a tool but italy needs him as much as any side needs anyone (except maybe the czech needing cech).

tomorrow should be fun again but i am ready for the knockout games. time to see these guys play all out.

Def agree - very frustrating to watch - they just give one too many passes - I mean dayum just shoot the freakin ball. :bang2:

Poor job by the officials. That was a goal for Ukraine.

Why do they set up the goal line assistant on the same side of the goal as the sideline assistant? It makes more sense to have them on opposite sides, but I guess that is the problem. The people in charge of soccer never seem to make sense. Sort of like the guys in charge of MLB.

It is kind of funny that the big criticism against Spain(one in which I somewhat agree) is that they often play one to many passes instead of shooting. Even with that they have scored the most goals in the tournament.

They miss David Villa. He isn't afraid to just shoot the ball. Same with Barca down the stretch. They needed that good, consistent second threat that Villa provided to compliment Messi.

Figured someone would use that to justify this one Ukraine totally deserved getting screwed for screwing you 2 years ago,.. oh wait

You should just say it was offside, which it was instead of taking the English attitude that the world somehow owes you something because you got the short end of one 2 years ago

I found this to be interesting:

Nicklas Bendtner fined €100,000 for sponsored underwear and received a one match ban

the Croatian federation was fined €25,000 ($31,449) for fans throwing fireworks and missiles and invading the pitch during their match against Ireland

Russia was given a €120,000 ($150,945) fine for stadium violence

Croatia's federation has been fined €80,000 ($101,500) for fans' racist chants, throwing flares and throwing a banana at black players during their match against Italy

in 2008, Croatia received a piddly €12,000 ($15,094) fine for racist conduct

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/socce...7--sow.html;_ylt=AgwICa0oSxhZRl2evolMxmY5nYcB

UEFA clearly places more emphasis on sponsorship than racism and violence. One player is getting fined as much as two separate federations for conduct that was disparagingly less offensive/damning.

Croatia has a strong history of this type of behavior, receiving multiple fines from UEFA and FIFA over the last few years. The fans don't care about the money, they should be banned from competition instead.

Wow, that's what I'm thinking. $100k and suspension for underwear. :laugh1:

On face value yeah its ridiculous. It is worth pointing out though that the player has more control over his own actions than the Croatian FA have over the Croatian fans.

I'd also say that fines and education are the way to deal with racism. The reason its a problem in eastern europe is, in my opinion anyway, the lack of imigration of black people to these areas. In the UK and indeed the States the problems are largely consigned to the history books, people have realised that we're all just people and racism has thankfully become completely socially unaceptable. This has been achieved through a combination of education and people of multiple ethnicities living side by side for generations. This simply hasn't happened in Eastern Europe.
Before we get on our high horse demanding others live to our standards in treatment of racism its probably worth remembering that its not too long ago that there was segregation on buses over there and even more recently there were bananas being thrown at black players in the UK. We went through a hell of a lot of shameful scenes ourselves before we got to the stage we are at now.

It was over the line & as the offside wasn't given (by the same incompetent linesman) should have been a goal.

However, to say Ukraine were screwed over is somewhat of a misconception as a 1-1 draw would have seen England win the group & the Ukraine finish third, which ironically is just how it finished anyway.

You may want to suggest that had Ukraine got back to 1-1 the result may have been different, however when England used that excuse for the Lampard goal against Germany most people just pointed out that it was sour grapes.

The biggest irony in all of this is that Blatter (the fool) has now come out and said that goal line technology is a necessity (which is something that the English FA has been saying for a while). Funny how this is the same fool (Blatter), that didn’t believe that this technology was needed after the last world cup when England was on the wrong end of a poor decision.

Anyway, England are through to the Quarter-Finals which is as much as any England fan could hope for. Fully expect that we will lose to Italy, so any kind of result from now on is bonus.

it isn't just passes, it is one to many touches setting up their own shots.

i agree about missing villa but it is a stylistic thing. it gets them more chances than anyone and is a beauty in midfield but hard to watch at the 18.

torres doesnt do it which is why he helps when he is on the field.
without him they basically play 6 outstanding midfielders.

it was a bad call... no goal... but ukraine had like 3 easy chances to score and failed when offsides want called against them. the ref back there was complete trash.

a draw would have been about right but not change the teams advancing.
glad it didn't happen in the single eliminations....

hopefully we soon see goalline technology where a light goes off like it does in hockey. easy to do.

that was a sports betting site he displayed in a sport fighting sportsbooks and match fixing. i can easily see the issues they had.

the racism stuff was from fans. controlling fans is nearly impossible.

croatia spent how long in an actual racial war?

end of the day it is a business. they are expanding to 24 teams which is silly just to make more money. europe is top notch but it doesn't have 24 world class teams. this year it had 14-15 arguably.

I am not an England fan per se but do expect them to beat Italy. They wouldn't have had a prayer vs Spain but Italy is very beatable.

I'd say England 2-1 over Italy.
Spain 3-2 over France. (I'll root 5-0 for Spain as I am anti-French)

Don't sleep on Italy they always do just enough to advance then a couple of 1-0 Italy bore fests later they're all of a sudden in the finals. Seen it to many times to bet against it

but his goal only offset the one the refs allowed for England which cost West Germany the 1966 World Cup.
