im drafting one in the third round....

and then let him get first team reps in the preseason

i need competition
I wouldn't be opposed to drafting a QB in the 3rd but it would have to be one that was high on my draft board and dropped. I wouldn't just draft a QB to be drafting a QB in the 3rd. We have too many other areas that are of concern. Depth on OLine, Depth at DT, Depth at RB, Depth at CB just to name a few. Especially when you know McCarthy isn't going to go with a rookie. McCarthy has everything to prove this year since he dumped Moore and is running the offense. No way he envisions an offense with a rookie 3rd round QB running it.

I know a lot of people want to move on from Dak but the front office has made that an obstacle with all of these restructure. Getting rid of him prior to the 2024 season leaves $61.9 million dead cap space on the books. Even keeping him through 2024 and letting him walk via free agency in 2025 leaves $36.5 million dead cap space.

I wouldn't do anything this offseason except maybe a late rounder for developmental purposes. Even then, that's about as likely to work out as not taking a QB at all.

Dak will get an extension and it will lock him in for another 4-5 years. There isn't a single chance he plays on a $59M cap hit next year or is cut at a $60M dead cap amount.

Booger already told us Max, so look for someone to move up a couple spots to steal him right ahead of us....watch this happen...it has before.

I dont want a non-viable QB taking up a roster spot.

If it's not someone with true potential of being a Dak successor, address it later and with a higher pick / FA.

EXACTLY what I've been saying, no projects in here anymore that look like they've never played a down of football!

Should it be addressed? look. Rush is here for 2 years and he's won what 5 out of 6 games he started. So unless QB is of value in day 2/3 then there isn't a big need. Grab an undrafted guy to sit on the PS cause thats all a 3rd QB will do year 1.

I believe Levis will surprise everybody. I watched him at Kentucky and was very impressed. He has the makeup to be really good. jmho

With the QB room being the same as it was last season, well last few seasons.
This is about what round will the choose a QB to groom.

I will also add this article, from the Mailbag, instead of a different thread. What if the BPA is a QB?
Nick has an interesting take, but sounds a bit crazy but also makes a bit of sense....BAN....Best Available Need.....

Whatever round Jerry deems necessary to create hype he can sell to the fans.

Former Bruin QB picking up steam here in Cowboys Zone a week and a half before the draft.
Played five seasons at UCLA - being the starter the last four.
Watched a few Bruins games over the course of his time there; improved every season.
Appears the 6th round is where most draft pundits look for him to get selected.
To me He is a Mini Hurts

Do not turn this into the normal Dak bash thread.
I think they would have guys in each round in their board. If he is there and a higher ranked player at another position isn’t then they take him. I don’t expect it to be in top 4 rounds but could be anytime after that just depending on who’s there

I agree wholeheartedly with that. That should have been done some years ago. If the Front Office feels Dak is the guy then I’d say take a flyer 5th round and after but if they are unsure , I’m taking one 2nd and 3rd.

Well you are looking for a backup so presumably day 3. Nothing earlier than that is even realistic because if you were honestly looking for a starter you would need to move up to 4 (possibly 5-7 if you are okay with the 4th best QB).

Not sure why it is difficult to look at the question from a Jerry Jones/Cowboys front office perspective instead of a personal one. Quarterbacks drafted during the Dak Prescott era:

2018: Mike White, 5th round
2020: Ben DiNucci, 7th round

In my opinioin, there has been nothing remotely hinted by Jones or his front office to assume they are looking at a near-term replacement or serious competitor for Prescott. Either one of those assumptions would mean a first or second day quarterback selection. What is the rationale that Jones will change established drafting methodology?

The draft cannot get here fast enough. Either a high round quarterback prospect will get drafted in day one or day two. OR. Either a quarterback prospect will be drafted in day three or signed after the draft concludes. Only afterwards will everyone know exactly how Jones & Co. planned on addressing this thread's topic since the team's playoff exit.
