Favorite "Underrated" Movies

You know I can't resist this. 10 Desert Island DVDs:

Reservoir Dogs; Godfather (1&2); Memento; Trees Lounge; Star Wars & The Empire Strikes Back; The Shining; Pulp Fiction; Goodfellas

It's hard to choose ten, but I'd be pretty contented with that lot.

I agree with Godfather one and two...three was just terrible, I actually liked the second one the best.. I also like Pulp Fiction (duh). What about goodfellas?

Shogun - Love the book more though, which is usually the case.

Band of Brothers
Saving Private Ryan
The Great Escape
Kelly's Heroes
The Dirty Dozen
The Devils Bridgade
Where Eagles Dare
(what can I say, I love WWII movies)

Little Big Man

Amadeus

Ok that is over 10:laugh1:

I've got the Italian Job coming now. Glad to hear it's good.

Memento one of the best movies ever.

Kingpin...is the funniest movie ever.

Waking Ned Devine.

The Full Monty.

Re-annimater.

Dead Man Walking.

Mystery Alaska.

Hi Fidelity.

Gross Point Blank.

Ah I just remembered two more underrated movies, both courtesy of John Sayles: Lonestar and Limbo.

Another is Angel Heart, starring Mickey Rourke and Robert DeNiro.

Watched Dog Day Afternoon again last night. Not underrated by any means, but an excellent movie nonetheless (with a great Elton John tune at the beginning.)

If you haven't seen 40 Year Old Virgin yet, see it!

Very, very funny.
Very funny, but man is it long!

Yes...I think it would have been a little better if they cut it down a tad.

For those of you that have seen it, but have not watched the dvd extras.

That scene where he was getting his chest hair waxed was actually real.

They were really doing that and he was just yelling out stuff.

Mystery Alaska.

I have yet to watch momento...I really have to get that sometime.

Re-Animator...man talk about some campy horror gorefest...one of the classics of that genre.

Mystery Alaska, another good underated movie.

How about John Carpenters Thing - has some pretty wild scenes in it.

Oh and for a comedy...Super Troopers always makes me laugh....Stop that, stop that right Meow.

they also have an alternate scene with the drunk driving girl when the cops show up that I thought was very funny as well.

I'll echo Memento, Boondock Saints, October Sky and Super Troopers.

And add:

Christopher Guest & co. mockumentary flicks... Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, Mighty Wind... supposed to be a new one out called For Your Consideration, but haven't seen it yet.

New fave, just got on DVD, Little Miss Sunshine... Alan Arkin, plays the grandpa, and is greatness. And the little girl is pretty good for a youngun.

The Edge with Anthony Hopkins and A. Baldwin is another good one.

Bad Santa with Billy Bob Thornton is funny as hell.

You really must. It also merits several viewings. It's complicated but makes perfect sense in the end.

For those that enjoy the likes of 40 Year Old Virgin, you need to check out Grandma's Boy...absolutely ridiculous.

A few others of the top of my head:

Secondhand Lions
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The World's Fastest Indian

my daughter just saw little miss sunshine and said it was great. she loved the grandpa. i wanted to rent it new years day but was no copies left so i rented the black dahlia and started reading my book about 10 minuets into it, the movie was jsut way to slow for me.

Strange Brew...the mckenzie brothers movie.

Still a classic.

Little Miss Sunshine was funny.

The grandpa is a character... he's a salty, porn-loving, heroine addict... but seems lovable nonetheless.

All the characters in there are really good.

I recommend it highly.

One of the most cringe-inducing scenes is when they give the last beer to the dog, and then have to pour the beer, along with bits of dog food, back into the can to give to their dad.

I shudder even thinking about it.

yeah, my daughter told me he drops f bombs through the whole movie and its funny. i told her, thats it no more dollars for her everytime i curse.

a couple years ago she started charging me a dollar everytime i curse and said it was something her mom instituted and it should be applied to me as well. which was fine most of the time, except when i get together and drink with my brother or the annual bike race party at my house every summer where we get 2 kegs . one bike race party she calculated i owed her 100 dollars.

So.... i told her i was on a discount plan any time ive had more than 4 beers :D

But she's 13 now and the kids at her school talk worse than me so ive put an end to her little money manking scheme.
