Jerry got an update on the early negotiations with Dak that Dak wants the richest contract in nfl history ( 52 mil plus a year , 250 mil guaranteed etc ) .

Jerry remembers he had no leverage the last time he had to pay Dak 42 mil . Dak failed to even take the cowboys to the CCG.

Jerry remembers that he interviewed QBs like Jalen Hurts before the 2020 draft and could have drafted him in the second round , (costing 2 mil a year ), and hurts delivered a Super Bowl spot , and almost win a SB ring .

Jerry wants a new card in case Dak wets the bed in big games again . Trey is that card. If Jerry feels he may lose Micah and Cee Dee and other stars because of Dak , then all bets on Dak are off .

What you're not addressing and apparently haven't even thought about is "in a couple of years", you have to give this kid a new contract or let him go. If he has proven he can give you "Dak-like" results then you have to pay him "Dak-like" money. That fraction of the money you're talking about in reality would be negligible.

the question is if we don't win it this or next. is it time to rebuild? (a small rebuild). We let Rush go in 2024 and Lance is primary back up at worst.
we have several options with Lance and he has to show enough in practice and preseason for Dallas to pick up his 5th year option. that gives us another year.
let him at that point be the starter (2025). draft a QB in 2024 or 2025 just in case. if he shows he is capable, then you can tag him for another year or negotiate a contract.
Drafting a QB in 2024 or 2025 gives us an option to develop.

No predictions but Trey Lance has physical ability beyond any previous Cowboys QB...Seriously...Aikman arm with Romo++ athletic ability. I've watched all of his NFL starts multiple times. It's insane that SF gave up on him...he has off the charts physical ability....Arm is unique...Phillip Rivers with RG3 athleticism...

for him it comes down to understanding the game and game time play....there have been hundreds of QBs with arm, athletic ability who could never adjust to NFL. I hope for our sake this kid does.

I think all of the hand-wringing going on over this trade is just proof positive that Dak is on very shaky ground. If the chiefs, eagles, or bills had made this trade it would have been a blip on the radar. The top tier quarterbacks of the world have nothing to fear from a Lance trade. The Kirk cousins tier however....
