you are pretty correct on your assessment. it all points to Jerry and his personnel, contract and cap management. he screwed up the Dak contract three times. he could have signed him while still under rookie contract but he pushed back over 2M per year, which was assinine. then ended up tagging him, which paid him the 2M per year he originally wanted and more...then he cornered himself when Dak's agent played chicken and handed him a 4 year contract, spread over 6 years to keep cap managed. the problem wasn't that, he then botched other personnel management and contracts which left the cowboys almost there, but not quite. albiet jerry was happy. the suspense and hope of next year brings back the fans as opposed to them winning it (in jerry's mind).I think you're probably 80% accurate in what you're saying. Jerry has become extremely cheap over the years, and he utilizes the salary cap as a weapon to not spend as much money on the roster.
The Cowboys absolutely can clear $70M before free agency starts, although without a restructure of Dak you're going to create a lot of additional holes in the roster. This issue is they do this all the time and that's why we have so many horrible contracts including Daks. The issue with Dak's deal really isn't the 4/$240m structure but rather the fact that it follows a 4/$160 structure where they only absorbed about $63M of it when they signed the extension and passed the rest of the bill into the current deal. From 2024 through the rest of Daks deal the Cowboys have to take $334M in cap hits on Dak alone.
Continuing to restructure these deals, especially Daks could completely destroy the Cowboys future. I'd be OK with that if Jerry truly went for an all in year and loaded up on talent, but I wont hold my breath.
The other top QBs in the $55M club arent all that insane because they mostly signed early. Burrows 5 year deal is really 7 with his last two years of rookie control to spead the cap hit out over. Same with Lawrence. Jordan Loves deal I'm not a fan of, but at least that's a 5 year total agreement plus is just a 2nd contract so it doesn't come with the carry over money like Daks is.
Dak's deal IMO gives Jerry an easy excuse to not pay many free agents once again. I hate it because its probably the right thing to do and not restructure Dak this year, but its all because of how Jerry handled the Dak negotiations as far back as 2020.
and he totally screwed himself this time. left with no QBs on the roster for 2025, he played chicken and he lost again. I advocated for him to let Dak walk and it would have been good for both of them. but Jerry just sees dollars.
