Geez…Dak hasn’t done anything with talented teams over the past nine-years…and with “history is the best predictor of the future” it doesn’t appear that Dak is all of a sudden take Dallas deep into the playoffs.
Why pay him more money for historical levels of performance? Let him play this year out and cut him loose…he will be 31 years old and is clearly a system QB…let some other team pay him.

My knee jerk reaction to this development is this is one of the dumbest things Jerry has done and that’s saying something because he’s done some really dumb things. I’m going to put my personal opinion on signing him aside and look at this from a bird’s eye view.
1. I’m completely shocked Jerry wants a short term deal and Dak wants a long term deal. I need you cap guys to explain this to me if I’m wrong. But wouldn’t a longer deal help the team deal with the already cap credit card of 40 million and spread out the signing bonus on the extension. That tells me Dak wanted to do a team friendly contract that gives us flexibility and Jerry is saying no. That’s if I understand it right.

2. If Jerry doesn’t want to commit long term to Dak then why even bother doing a 2 year deal? It seems to me that Dak wants to retire a Cowboy and Jerry doesn’t believe in him to sign him long term. So if you don’t believe in the guy then why didn’t you try and trade him early in the offseason so we can get something for him. If you’ve lost faith in him then why sign him for 2 years? Cut or trade him now and let’s start the rebuild.

3. I feel like Jerry is throwing away 2024 by his decision making. We could have done this in March, not 2 days before the season starts. In March Jerry should have told Dak we lost faith in you and we’re only going to sign you as a 2 year rental while we look for your replacement. You’re free to look around for better offers and if you find one we’ll trade you, obviously if you waive the NTC. Dak could have gotten his 60 million payday this season and we could have gotten compensation. Horrible mismanagement.

4. Jerry is a bad GM and a bad owner. I don’t know how anyone can stand up for this guy.

Shorter or longer really depends on how that arm is used behind the center.
Get this imposter that needs to be carried off our team ASAP.

It's really simple. Jerry knows he can't win a super bowl with Dak. Cee Dee, Micah, and Dak all want top money. Dak wants at least 60 mil per year, if its a 4 year contract Dallas has to add on another 10 mil per year so Dallas would be paying Dak 70 mil per year. Either Dak accepts a lower amount or Jerry is moving on without Dak. Not enough money can be allocated for the 3 players and then spend the rest of the money to field a competent team to support Dak.

Players generally want shorter contracts so they can cash in again ASAP. If it the Cowboys who want and get a shorter deal, expect a Round 1 QB getting drafted within the next 2 years.
Why would Dak be interested in that?

So Jerry is rebuilding and not trying to win a SB.

Dak is not interested in helping Jerry rebuild.

I totally agree. My beef is why didn’t we do this in March? My beef is not resigning Dak. I’m all for that, unless Dak signed for 25-30 million. I’m kind of relieved it’s looking like a deal won’t get done because I’m all for a salary cap purge and roster rebuild. So my issue is roster management and timing on this one. If Jerry and DNA boy were not going to meet Dak’s contract demands then why couldn’t this happen in March before the draft and before preseason?

That’s my beef. Now it seems like we’re wasting 2024 on a lame duck QB and coaches when we could have been building for the future. The only thing that makes sense is if Jerry thought Dak would cave and Jerry is winning the staring contest. Outside of that I feel this could have been done in March and we could have traded for Justin Fields and let Trey, Justin and Rush battle it out this summer. I don’t want Dak here but I feel Jerry could have handled it much better for the franchise.

Sounds like a front office trial balloon type story fed to Fisher. Exploring the reaction from the folks in the know around the league and the Cowboy fan base.
exactly. They did the same thing with the Amari Cooper narrative they concocted.
