Fish Reports: Cowboys want Dak but not for long

Video starts at the relevant portion. Fish knows the Athletic reporter and that she has sources inside The Star. Essentially, it's not the APY that is the sticking issue, it's the Cowboys unwillingness to give Dak long-term security with the team.

As I had been saying to some folks, the party that cares (or can afford to care the least) almost always has the leverage. Dak wants the Cowboys more than they want him.

there is a reason for that. with Dak and prior to that with Romo, Jerry being Jerry he generated hope to sell to the fans. now, 15 years of post season failure, fans are not happy and the old excuses don't work any longer. Jerry knows he cornered himself. he has no QB on the team for 2025. he has to do something and its keeping Dak and continuing the same story line for another year or two as there is still enough of the fan base that will follow. but then things will continue to get worse as they have and he has to make a move, and generate hope through drafting the next QB.....so he doesn't want long term commitment specially that cowboys are notorious for not letting players go (ala Denver) if they are still owed money. they run the players and coaches to the end of the contract.

all you have to do is follow the money and you understand Jerry's motives.

I'm so sick of hearing this line of dak was 2nd in mvp voting and he deserves to be paid...the delineation between how he plays against bad teams vs good teams is stark and his ceiling is known

Let him go somewhere else and get paid, and get them 12 regular season wins just to get knocked out in the WC or d round....enough already

ere's the issue with Dak. If they gave him a 4 year 55M a year extension, his average cap hit would be 63M a year when you add the 95M leftover.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought we only owe 40 million to the cap after this season. What is the 95M leftover? Not arguing with you I’m just trying to figure it out.

It is possible to find another QB. I think people are stressing too much over this. Hell, the Bucs made the playoffs with Mayfield. I don't dislike Dak, I dislike Dak at 60M a year +95M carry over. A QB like Dak on a rookie deal would be just fine. Without the panic mode in the playoffs of course. Even a second contract isn't that bad if done correctly. But a 3rd contract is where it gets really tough.
Yet the Falcons just paid Kirk Cousins a boat load of money with a torn ACL and drafted another QB. It’s hard to find even a serviceable QB in the league, much less a decent one.

Do I need to list the games Dak has led the team to victory against good teams in recent years to prove you wrong?

Yes like great success in the playoffs
Oh you mean like the previous QB? Or better yet all the others from 96 to 05? …. Got it!

I don’t care if they move on but those pinning the failures on the qb as the reason lack football IQ

This is stupid. They sign him for two years and we are back in the same spot we are in now in 2026.

Just move on man. Sign a vet in free agency and draft a qb in April
Could also just roll with what we have. Even with some extra losses it would be fun to see Coop/ Trey play a year.

Getting embarrassingly bounced out of the playoffs? Not fun.

Oh, so NOW Dak wants a long-term deal at 31 YO? Nah, you and France don’t get to play that game now. Dallas wanted a longer commitment during your “prime years,” and now you want to hold Dallas hostage for 5-7 years when there will likely be a significant decline in your play into your mid 30s. You’re not Brady/Manning, and you never will be, Rayne.

You are following an Eagles troll. He accidentally finally admitted as much early this summer but quickly deleted his comment after realizing his mistake and hoping no one noticed. Too bad a few of us caught it and took a screen shot for proof. As you can see, you and others are supporting an Eagles troll and have fallen into his web of deceit. Good luck following him and his Eagles team. Heck, he even uses Siriani's face as his avatar picture. It doesn't get any more pathetic than that for a "so called" Cowboys fan.
Nice deflection

I can see why Dak would want a longer deal at this point. A longer contract probably takes him to the end of his career. I don't see Dak making it to 40 and beyond in terms of age.

I can't quite wrap my head around how a shorter deal for Dallas works unless they are trying to buy a year or two until they can line up a successor. Maybe Trey Lance was supposed to be it and they are scurrying for plan B. Paying Dak near the top of the market and carrying his cap hit forward dedicates a lot of money to the QB position. It's tough, then, to burn up too many years on a rookie contract for anyone drafted. I guess a short deal gives them a draft or two to find a replacement.
You got it backwards. Because they have Trey Lance is the reason they want a short deal. If they did not have Trey Lance they would want a longer deal in order to find someone

Unlike you and all the hateful parrots, Jerry is tickled pink with Trey

My knee jerk reaction to this development is this is one of the dumbest things Jerry has done and that’s saying something because he’s done some really dumb things. I’m going to put my personal opinion on signing him aside and look at this from a bird’s eye view.
1. I’m completely shocked Jerry wants a short term deal and Dak wants a long term deal. I need you cap guys to explain this to me if I’m wrong. But wouldn’t a longer deal help the team deal with the already cap credit card of 40 million and spread out the signing bonus on the extension. That tells me Dak wanted to do a team friendly contract that gives us flexibility and Jerry is saying no. That’s if I understand it right.

2. If Jerry doesn’t want to commit long term to Dak then why even bother doing a 2 year deal? It seems to me that Dak wants to retire a Cowboy and Jerry doesn’t believe in him to sign him long term. So if you don’t believe in the guy then why didn’t you try and trade him early in the offseason so we can get something for him. If you’ve lost faith in him then why sign him for 2 years? Cut or trade him now and let’s start the rebuild.

3. I feel like Jerry is throwing away 2024 by his decision making. We could have done this in March, not 2 days before the season starts. In March Jerry should have told Dak we lost faith in you and we’re only going to sign you as a 2 year rental while we look for your replacement. You’re free to look around for better offers and if you find one we’ll trade you, obviously if you waive the NTC. Dak could have gotten his 60 million payday this season and we could have gotten compensation. Horrible mismanagement.

4. Jerry is a bad GM and a bad owner. I don’t know how anyone can stand up for this guy.
The 2 year deal is not to "Look for His replacement" it is to mold the replacement already on the roster

The only question I have is why would an EAGLES fan want us to get rid of a qb that has continuously failed in the playoffs?

Niners and Packers fans that I know want us to make Dak the HIGHEST paid Qb in the league, specifically so we won't remain a threat AND we will lessen the ability to bring in real FA help...

...I'm starting to wonder if Boys fans who want our QB to break the bank are really the true trolls

Our fans should want our players to be compensated commensurate with production in the regular season and playoffs....and ONLY because a salary cap exists and how it effects our roster.
