Five Dallas Cowboys Thoughts: How Important Is It To Draft A QB In Round One?

I believe the reason so many first round QB's bust is because they were not really good enough to be drafted in the first round. Any team that is targeting a QB in the first round generally really needs a QB and they reach for one in fear of not having the one they want available when they pick.

The position is so important that it causes teams to reach and grab one that really only gets a first or second round grade because the QB class is weak that year or a few teams are really desperate for that franchise QB.

Where would Lynch and Goff be drafted if they had Winston and Mariotta coming out this year with them?

Completely agree. An advantage that we have is that we don't need a starting QB for next year. We have a top 5 QB. We need a backup and we would like a QB to groom for the future, but we do not have to desperately reach for one. That is what the Cleveland Browns do.

If a QB is there for our #1 pick that the scouts believe is a near can't-miss then pull the trigger, but if there is a QB that the scouts are so-so on while there are still a number of near can't miss defensive prospects than go for the defensive guy and wait until a later round.

The fact that we can let our guy sit and learn behind a stud for two or three years is also an advantage. I think if Osweiler had been forced to start in 2012 he would have busted, but with those years to learn he has turned in to a pretty good pro. I would be curious to see what a Hogan or a Prescott can do with two or three years to learn the pro game.

Paxton Lynch has me scared after his bowl game performance yesterday. Not accurate, 100 yards, and a pick. That tells me if Goff is unavailable you wait till the second round and take Carson Wentz or Dak Prescott who's a gamer.

Goff has thrown 10 more interceptions than Lynch this year

I have zero knowledge of lower round QB's. So I promote the top five guys just because
I read about em. Goff has got my interest big time.

Ditto. Goff has the arm.

Lynch has mobility. but not the arm. He didn't even hit 50% in his bowl game against Auburn.

Cook didn't impress me at all last night. I've heard he has a problem with locking on to his receivers.

I'm not ignoring this position, or relying on this inept staff to find one in the later rounds.

That says my point even more.....

Our current O relies solely on #9 to get us in the correct play. So, we going to waste a 1st in a QB to learn our scheme, then HOPEFULLY become Romo by changing into plays?

NONSENSE

They likely aren't going to get a better draft position than #4 overall. At least least not until Tony retires and the team bumbles it's way through an entire season without Romo.

If you need a QB, Top 5 is probably a good place to be sitting.

No way I take Goff over Lynch. I take the highest rated player on the board, including a QB. QB is not anywhere near our top need, but you don't get these opportunities often...try going all the way back to the Aikman pick for the last time the Cowboys had a chance to take a blue chip talent.

If we are sitting with the 4 th pick and actually like the developmental talent of Lynch or Goff (neither is thought to be ready yet), it would be foolish to pass on a top talent at QB for a DT, LB, or CB.

Pretty important.

Especially if you're getting a guy to sit and learn for a few years. Drafting QB's is usually a bit of a crapshoot, but the more talented guys will always be drafted high.

I think the reason a lot of 1st round talents flame out is because they're drafted by bad teams who thrust them into a starting role their first year in the league. That can really shake a young guys confidence when he's never played that level of competition.

You can catch lightning in a bottle here and there, but this is a QB driven league and they're not in high supply. Talented QBs will always go high.

The point is...you do not have to spend an elite draft pick to land a Super Bowl quality quarterback. You can but it doesn't necessarily give you a better chance than the team that signed their QB(Brees) or let the draft Come to them instead of forcing the issue (Rodgers, Brady, Wilson)

RGIII hasn't proven he can play quarterback since the NFL has caught up with the read option.

Guys like Manning, Brady and Rodgers win championships. Only one of those guys were picked in the top 10. I agree with you that we need to make a QB investment...but not with our first round pick just for the sake of drafting a quarterback. If the team feels they are getting a can't miss prospect, take him....if not, take this opportunity that comes once every 20 years and get an instant impact player.

The first thing that needs to be considered is that the talent is worth a first round pick. I agree that picking s QB in the first round does not insure that he will be a top pro. from the tone of your post, it seems like you don't want to spend a first round pick on a QB. If the talent is legit , it would be foolish to skip on a good QB with hopes of finding a solid third round talent that will never be capable of starting a game in the pros. Ignoring the QB position at this point will help start another era that compares to the Quincey years. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see a QB drafted in the first if he is not worth it, but waiting to draft a QB in the later rounds is more likely than not a wasted pick. This developing a QB notion only works if there is talent there to be developed.nverg few have the talent and they end up being wasted draft picks. Romo's replacement needs to be drafted and groomed now, not after he gets hurt and has to retire.

It is time to make a major investment in Romo's future replacement. There is no side-stepping the issue. The rookie can serve as Romo's back-up until it is time for Romo to retire . It is short sighted to wait any longer unless fans are looking forward to another ten years like the post-Aikman era. I can usually try and see several options to address this type of problem, but in this case, there is only one way to handle this. If a QB is available during the first round of the draft that has the talent to lead this team for the next ten years, it would be stupid not to draft him. IMO, there is no debating this issue . The QB position is just too important.

Agreed.

Matter of fact I would draft 2 QBs.

One to be Romo's backup and another to back him up.

I want us to have 2 good QBs to compete for the job.

When Romo leaves..

one or the other steps up.

This focusing on one guy to be the answer is not smart in my mind.

And even if one or both sit for a couple of years..so what?

Is a quality QB as a 3rd QB on the active roster really less important than some roster spot for a 3rd string ST player?

I think not.

Most important, unless you already have a QB. When Romo is done you will get a shot at a new one.

According to the front office ramblings that's what will do, and in the mean time finding a viable backup is the said top priority.

Wait for it and ... the Joneses will tell you more about their intentions prior to the draft.

The original point of my rant was the thought that we need a top 10 quarterback because most teams have one. My argument was that only one of the current playoff teams have a top draft pick QB which they drafted.

I agree entirely with your post. The quarterback position must be a priority. I just don't want to see the team take a player that they have ranked as the 20th best player overall just because it's a quarterback. I want an elite player, if the team takes a quarterback then I will support it if they feel the quarterback is close to the best player on the board. Regardless I hope to see a free agent acquisition and a draft pick.

Unless we end up with the second overall pick where we are guaranteed a top quarterback, it will be tough to take a quarterback considering I am certain we will address the position prior to the draft...do we draft a third string quarterback 4th overall? I hope not. Regardless, I hope to see one on the roster by the end of the third.

I also want to add that Joey Galloway had a lot to do with the Quincy Carter years. Not having a first round pick for two straight seasons kind of throws a wrench into things.

If that is their plan, they deserve ten years of losing due to poor QB play.

I don't see why we should assume drafting a QB high and finding a viable backup are mutually exclusive.

I'd rather not dump all of our resources into the offense. How much talent do they need to perform? We already have what is essentially 4 1st rounders on the O-line, a hall of fame tight end, 1st round receiver, and even a 1st round runningback. If we don't go qb, I'm all for giving Marinelli the resources he needs to turn this into a top defense in this league, especially since they are expected to shut out other teams and get 5 turnovers a game.

4 first round picks on the line
Hall of Fame TE
1st round all pro receiver
A top 10 pick at RB

And we somehow are barely above SF for worst offense in the league (31st in scoring offense)

For Garrett's offense to work, we either need 1st round picks at every offensive position or we need a JEDI playing QB (see Romo).;)

I think it's simple.

1) We want the best QB. We have about 3 years to address QB before Romo retires. Our options are pretty much any QB from this year (aside from maybe one of Lynch/Goff if Cleveland takes him), or late-1st/2nd round quality QBs (where hopefully we'll be drafting) in 2017 and 2018. If Goff or Lynch are better than the 3rd/4th best QBs in 2017 and 2018, then you take Goff or Lynch. It's that simple.

2) We can either give a QB a few years to develop or throw him into the fire immediately. Drafting a QB this year will give him 2-3 years to develop. Drafting a QB in the next 2 drafts will make it more likely that he has no time to develop.

So the questions are: 1) Are Goff or Lynch your best options for the remainder of the Romo era?, and 2) How many years do you want to give a QB to develop and learn from Romo?

Just don't start complaining in 3 years when we throw a 2nd round rookie into the starting position and he plays like... a 2nd round rookie.

Very reasonable and well thought out post bro.

Yea, Lynch totally crapped the bed in his bowl game...................did not look like a top 10 pick at all..........maybe he just had a bad day, but dam.

Would be very worried picking him in the top 10.

21 of the 32 QBs who started 2015 as their teams clear starter entered the league via the first round. A further 3 were 2nd round picks.

There are approximately 100 QBs who are on regular season rosters in any season.

Approx two thirds of the starters were drafted in the first round.

Of the approx 25 active first rounders, more than 80% are starting.

Of the approx 75 others, c.15% are starting.

The stats don't lie.

Dam, Csirl dropping "truth bombs" on everybody in this thread.
