Jones isn't without part of the team's malaise. It is hard to replace aging players or malcontents when the salary cap structure is hamstringing the coach.

They replaced most of those players since Garrett become the HC. After this season, the only starters over 30 and under contract will be Romo, Witten and Ware.

This article is way to negative. I'm still enjoying this win and looking forward to another on Thursday. That will put us at 7-5. 2 games above that dreaded .500 mark. You are what your record says you are. I do agree that we have trouble putting teams away an we always make it close.

i am sure garrett cares as much about your opinion of him as you do mine of you... thus the point.

if you have any analysis that suggests we haven't done any play-action passing in 6 years you should disregard it as patently false.

i hardly believe garrett is a great coach but he has improved by quite a lot this season thus far.

this article was the voice of the mouth-breathing fan that would rather lose games to get a new coach than win games and discover we already have a coach that is developing same as they all have to.

If he has improved quite a lot. It needs to show up in the win loss record. I'm as happy as anybody about this win. But I still believe JG needs to have a strong finish to the season to justify him staying.

If only it were that easy.......

Going forward Dallas is going to have a very difficult decision to make regarding DE/OLB DeMarcus Ware. Ware will be 32 years old in 2014. He is the lone Cowboys whose release or trade saves significant money- $7.4 million. Ware’s cap figure in 2014 is $16 million and then $17.5 million in 2015. These are very difficult cap numbers for 32 and 33 year old pass rushers. Julius Peppers has that kind of figure this season and won’t be back in Chicago next year. The going rate for older rushers is around $5 million a year. Ware will earn $27 million in cash in 2014 and 2015.

The reality is Ware really needs to have his contract ripped up and to take a paycut that makes him the highest paid older player rather than one of the highest paid player, but Dallas’ negotiations throughout history would give them almost no leverage to even push it. It would require a complete philosophical change. Most likely they will look to restructure his contract, which in my mind would be a disaster, but I don’t see them going another route.

If the Cowboys go all in with Ware and reduce his salary to the minimum they can save $8,471,250 against the salary cap even if they do not add void seasons to the contract. The problem with that move is it pushes Ware’s salary cap figure to $20.3 million in 2015 with a whopping $13,789,000 in dead money if they need to release him. Is that worth doing? Probably not and the team needs to avoid touching that deal if at all possible.

I can't find what the 2014 cap hit would be if he was released....yet.

Hmm. I was under the assumption that if we moved ware we would save about 8 mil in 2014 with minimal dead money going forward

Yes, his base salary is 12.25M for 2014. If they keep him, that money hits the cap at some point. Restructuring would only push some of it into the future.

If they make him a June 1st cut, the 2014 cap hit will be 3.75M and the 2015 cap hit will be 5.8M.

Similar to Peppers, if cut, Ware would not get paid that kind of money in Free Agency.

They did force the issue with Doug Free and cut his base salary in half. Jerry should still be feeling the sting of paying 10.6M to Spencer and 18M to Ratliff and receiving near-zero in return. Hopefully this helps him to make good football decisions instead of paying for past performance.

Thx, what would the cap be if he was traded for 2014?

Yeah, in 6 years he hasn't been able to run, suddenly, he can... There are plenty of ex-QBs that can't coach... Garrett is just one of many...

You know, you would fetch if they hung you with a new rope!

But, I do have to agree with you on the play-action. Last night I was actually surprised to see how many play action plays were made and they most of the time it worked! Why did they just now start that? lol

I hope they continue because IMO it was part of the offense that just was not there, or I must have missed it.

Can't say I agree with this. The Cowboys did not look a "bad" football team to me, especially considering the refs gifted the Giants two FGs with terrible penalties that kept drives alive. The Cowboys passing game looked solid. The running game and oline were pretty solid. The playing calling was much improved, as was the pass defense. Yes, we were gashed on the ground, but that weakness will be rectified with the return of Lee.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Lee was put on IR. He won't be seen on the field again 'til next year.

Was this article written by a Commanders troll? He sounds like a baby with too much time on his hands. He must not watch much football because anyone who does should realize there is a ton of parity in the NFL today. The Colts just got destroyed by the freakin Cardinals (who may be better than the 49ers right now!). The Rams are getting hot. The Packers are floundering without Rodgers. You take the wins however you can get them and move on. This isn't the BCS and there are no style points.
Cowboys just swept the Giants in what they were calling their most important game of the season. Romo was CLUTCH and the defense stepped up. We are winning the East and we are in a great position with a game against the Raiders up next. Can the football fans be allowed to enjoy football once in a while?
