Didn't you listen to the press conference? He said, "Ware sucks and I wish that I had drafted Merriman because that guy is just totally *****in'! I love him, and if he was on this team we would have won this years superbowl already!"

This thread is not a Merriman thread...please move along if you choose to contiue with this conversation...What Im tryin to do is get people to compare this team..to the teams of our past as a standard for what we as Cowboys fan should be holdin our defensive standards accountable to...thats all..How do I know that thats what I should be expecting?

Because when drafted Bill Parcells himself said the name Lawrence Taylor (not me)when we draft Ware..which means presser player no matter what!

What is your point? That Ware is not as dominant right now as LT was at his peak... which didn't occur until his 6th NFL season?

LT had 17 sacks in his first two seasons. Ware is on pace for 15.2 in his first two seasons.

LT had 1 TD in his first two seasons. Ware already has 1.

Give the kid a break. You are comparing him to the most dominant LB ever. And at this point in his career, he is keeping up.

The question is going to be progress. Can he progress? I don't think he will ever be LT, but I think he will great in his own right.

Give him time.

Ware is the player we drafted and I'm glad he's a Dallas Cowboy. The kid has played almost every down since he put on the STAR and that's while Learning a new position. He has played at a level only a blind man would call mediorce.

Is he dominant, maybe not today but who knows about tomorrow, Monday Night, next week a year from now. Only time will tell.

Ware, DeMarcus.......is a Cowboy therefore I concern myself with his play not Merriman, Shawne's.....who is a Charger the last time I looked.

Good Grief!!! quit crying over spilt milk. Why don't we put this mediorce subject to rest and awake it in two or three years when most of the data is in.

BP said he wasn't a catalytic player. That's a player that other's can feed off of emotionally. A player that can get other players going, even when they're in a funk. Like the way Roy does when he lays a big hit. BP said he isn't consistent enough to be considered that type of player.

Most Raiders fans I interact with are disgusted by their team’s performance Monday night against San Diego. The Coliseum was sold out for the return of Art Shell as coach, and Randy Moss was ready to make a statement in prime time. But the Chargers pounded the ball with LaDainian Tomlinson on the ground, and quarterback Philip Rivers only needed to throw 11 passes (completing eight) in the 27-0 rout. The key to San Diego winning the game was the dominant performance from Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman. I was on the sideline to watch him play at “real speed,” and he is the best defensive player since Ray Lewis, and I would rate him ahead of Brian Urlacher of the Chicago Bears.

Merriman manhandled Robert Gallery and the rest of the Oakland offensive line and played with an intensity similar to Lawrence Taylor. He is an unstoppable force, and offensive coordinators will have to make sure he is accounted for on every play. Merriman will demand the respect of every quarterback, running back and tight end that he competes against for the next 10 years. Every player in the NFL should have to watch the video of Merriman against Oakland and commit to playing at his intensity on every play. San Diego is quietly building a Super Bowl defense.

Sack Leader...
The NFL tracks all stats for players. They didn't always do that. The internet gives access to this information. Shawn Merriman has been elected by the media as the most dominant player in the league. So what does the stats say.

Merriman in 2 games has 7 tackles 3 sacks and 1 interception. He is listed as a Linebacker.

Ryan Denney De Buffalo Bills 12 tackles 3sacks
Bart Scott Lb Baltimore Ravens 10 tackles 3 sacks
Justin Smith De Cincinnati Bengals 7 tackles 3 sacks

Keith Bulluck Lb Tennessee Titans 25 tackles
Chris Hope Db Tennessee Titans 25 tackles
London Fletcher-Baker Lb Buffalo Bills 20 tackles
Adam Archeleta S Washington Commanders 20 tackles
Demaco Ryans Lb Houston Texans 20 tackles
Eric Barton Lb New York Jets 19 tackles

So what is so great about 7 tackles and 3 sacks? People believe Shawn Merriman is so special then where is the proof.

Merriman compared himself to Junior Seau let's just see how they match-up.
Seau New England Patriots 17th season 13 tackles no sacks.
Merriman San Diego Chargers 7 tackles 3 sacks.
After 2 weeks Seau with a 3 tackle lead. remember a sack is a tackle for loss.

3- and remember this last year...where is ware when we need a play?

Lights Out for Indy's Quest for 19-0
Dec 20, 2005 | 12:00AM | report this

It might be a bit of exaggeration to call the San Diego Chargers' win over the Indianapolis Colts "fateful," but its impact on the league should not go overlooked. In sixty minutes of action, Shawne Merriman popped Peyton Manning and into the spotlight, and the Chargers popped the Colts' dreams of 19-0.

Merriman, the 6'4", 272-lb rookie linebacker from the University of Maryland, thrust himself into instant stardom and showcased his potential greatness with a dominant performance in the RCA Dome. His efforts -- statistically recorded as 4 tackles, including a fourth-down stop with the Colts inside their own 5, and two sacks -- were enough to earn him various accolades, including Defensive Player of the Week from SI's Peter King and multiple "booyahs!" and "hollas!" from Sportscenter anchors (note: not officially NFL-recognized accolade).

Even though Merriman still has major strides to make as an all-around defender (he is removed from the lineup in certain passing situations, as he has not completely grasped the Chargers' coverage schemes), he has shown the electrifying playmaking abilities that made him a top draft pick and which have many foreseeing him as one of the league's most dominant linebackers in the near future.

While Merriman's day gave opposing quarterbacks and offensive coordinators nightmares about the future, it also afforded a glimpse of hope for worry-wart defensive coordinators who will face the Colts this season. He provided the kind of ferocious pass rush that is perhaps the only weapon to slow down Peyton's potent passing attack. Few teams can release an athletic freak with the natural sack-artist abilties of "Lights Out," those that can put pressure on Manning will be able to challenge the Colts. Merriman stopped Indianapolis pursuit of history, but it remains to be seen if other teams have what it takes to stop them in their pursuit of a title.

4- CBS has him listed as a runner up for top player of the quarter..where is ware?

http://cc.msnscache.com/cache.aspx?q...-US&FORM=CVRE7

Defensive Player of the Quarter: It was a tough choice between Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers and Denver Broncos corner Champ Bailey. Since the Broncos have the better defense, I'll go with Bailey, the truest shutdown corner in the game.
Runners-up: Peppers; Ravens LB Bart Scott; Eagles DE Trent Cole; Broncos MLB Al Wilson; Chargers DT Jamal Williams; Chargers LB Shawne Merriman; Bears DT Tommie Harris.

If you plan to be a troll, at least be an accurate troll.

There was nothing "trollish" about his post.

I'd be surprised if any Cowboys fans actually feel Ware is dominant. He's a solid player, inconsistent, but has the potential to be dominant, but he's nowhere near that level right now.

^^^

That's a trollish post.

Just cuz Ware isn't as good as Merriman doesn't mean he's "Mediocre".

And who cares if he's "As good" or "Better" then Merriman? As long as he reaches his potential, that's all that matters. If he becomes a dominant player, but not as good as Merriman, I think I'll be ok with that.

Quick question for you...

Have you ever heard of a player's arc of development??

Judging from your posts I doubt it, so I'll explain it to you.

DeMarcus Ware is raw. BP said it today apparently, and it's true. He went to Troy.

Shawne Merriman went to Maryland, which is in a BCS conference, and a big program. He was more polished coming out of college, and everyone knew that.

BP and Jeff Ireland however liked the potential of Ware to be a better player down the road. Not in his first 2 or even his first 5 seasons necessarily. There is nothing in Ware's development to suggest that he WON'T be as good or better than Merriman down the line. Is he better now? That's debatable. I'll even give you that Merriman is slightly better now, and it doesn't change a thing. I still wouldn't want Merriman. Because the braintrust believed that Ware would be better down the road. He's a more complete LBer right now, and IMO, he's exactly what we needed. Therefore, I'll reserve judgment until later in their careers. There's no rush.

It's like a fine whiskey... or wine, take your pick... better with age. Don't be in such a rush. We're going to have him here for a long time. Get over your hurt feelings and enjoy watching a great one develop.

If you had actually listened to the PC, Parcells said Ware isn't a dominant player because he's too green. Not many 2nd year players are dominant; Merriman is the rare exception. Ware has the potential to be great but he just has to show up every day.

Bill said the only dynamic players on the defense were Roy Williams and Anthony Henry.

Which I agree with. Our defense is full of solid players. But Henry and Williams are the only dynamic players.

Williams changes games with hits leading to FF's, sacks, INT's....
Henry does the same, making INT's, a dynamic play as well.
