Ah yes, quotes from Jimmy after the draft saying that Aikman was their guy. That's convincing. Actions speak louder than words. And the action of drafting a QB in the supplemental draft rings loud and clear.

I guess some people expect Jimmy to say,

"man I never wanted Aikman, but Jerry was being a little cry-baby, so I decided to draft him..."

Interesting... You argue that we regressed because of absolutely horrific drafts, and in the same sentence, because of salary cap issues, expect us to fill in the blanks with less expensive draft picks.... makes a hell of a lotta sense...

I don't know what your point is, but it makes a hell of allot of sense. Sorry if you can't get it.

I disagree. I think the worst GM move Jerry did was not getting rid of Lacewell after the 1995 draft. Even with signing a bust like Galloway, a great head of personnel and scouting can overcome these dopey moves in one or two drafts. Stepret Williams??????? Remember "Corey Fleming caught a pass!!!!! Corey Fleming caught a pass!!!!!" C'mon!!!! Those were Lacewell guys.

How is Galloway a bust? He got injured his first game here. How is he performing in Tampa Bay BTW?

No, it makes absolutely no sense.

You argue that even if we had salary cap issues, we should have drafted quality players with less expensive draft picks, meaning low-round draft picks. SO are we suppose to build contenders based upon lower quality players?

known, not at the time, that Aikman asked to be traded because he coudln't get along with the headcoach. It wasn't until Noval Turner, a recommendation from Dan Fauts, and after being turned down by Brian Billick ( yea, that same guy who just got fired in Baltimore ) came to town did Aikman had somebody he could trust.

Jimmah, much like Parcells, was such a paranoid freak who hated to lose more than he liked to win, had very little patience with players. That's why he's never lasted longer than 5 years anywhere he's worked as a coach.

LOL. I'm glad you're so certain. Funny that reports over the past two decades have consistently been that Jimmy wanted Mandarich. But it's whatever fits your agenda.

Agenda. Like you trying to act like Jerry is the main cog in the early days and Jimmy was some buffoon Jerry had to keep reining in.

You guys and your revisionist history are amusing. If Jerry hired Switzer instead of Jimmy in '89 I guarantee we still would only have 2 Super Bowl trophies in our case.

Actually, it's quite the opposite. Jerry is part of the success as well.

Nope. No one is saying Jimmy was a buffoon. But I'll never agree with a troll who claims that Jerry is a buffoon who deserves no credit.

I thought Gil Brandt drafted Aikman?.

He would have and he was there to see Aikman with Jimmy at the workout. Tom Landry had decided Aikman would be the pick. When Gil asked Tom what he thought of Aikman after watching the Cotton Bowl workouts, Tom merely said I have seen enough and Gil said that meant Aikman was the guy. As I mentionned above they were even willing to give him number 12.

Jimmy had a lot of glowing reports as well(doesn't everyone after they draft a player, but especially after they draft them first overall???) but it was clear he drafted Steve Walsh only a month or so later to compete for the job.

Norv presented Aikman in Canton and Jimmy Johnson wasn't even in the audience that day.

Jimmy grew to understand how talented Aikman was and got Troy in tropical fish as one means of bonding with a guy whose trust was lost with the drafting of Walsh. Aikman was not a very happy camper until Norv came along.

Less expensive doesn't mean low round. It just means not in the top of the first round.
During the '94 - '02 seasons we had plenty of first round and first day picks. Some years we had 2-3 picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. During Jimmy's years, that's when we hit on alot of our top talent. During the Jerry/Lacewell drafts, that's when he got guys like Sherman Williams, Shante Carver, Stepfret Williams, Mike Ulafale, Shane Hannah, Kendall Watkins, Dwayne Goodrich, Kareem Larrimore, and on and on and on.

If we had those draft picks in those rounds with a solid GM, you better believe we would've been able to avoid dropping to back to back to back 5-11 seasons.

With the Cowboys he was a bust. With the Bucs, he's playing extremely well....it's reminiscent of the pitchers the Yankees get rid of who succeed on other teams. But that's besides the point. If the Cowboys draft a good receiver under Lacewell, then Galloway never even enters the equation.

And none of that changes the point. We clearly had salary cap issues, and that affected how we picked players.

LOL... The only reason we never got to see Galloway was because he got injured his very first game. What we are talking about is evaluation of talent. Joey Galloway is performing in Tampa Bay, meaning he is a damn good WR. That is not the definition of a bust, and what jerry saw was a correct, a #1 receiver in Galloway.

That season, we had Galloway and the Rocket, God only knows how good that offense would have been with that much speed.

That is actually what happened.

Jimmy wanted to draft Mandarich. He thought Aikman was a "loser" and Walsh was a "winner". Those aren't my words they are Jimmy's.

Jimmy and Jerry were quoted in the earlier link I provided. Those are Jimmy's words and verified by Jerry Jones, not some inuendos or rumors.

jterrell;1873936 said:
After their rookie season Jimmy took a poll of his assistants and only 2 believed Aikman was actually the better QB(1 happened to the QB coach, lol). Now you know why his assistants sucked as future head coaches:)

They had Walsh at Miami and had won a national championship with him, thus they believed in him.

And yet Troy played ahead of Walsh unless he was injured. And Walsh was traded in 1990, one year after he was drafted in the supplemental draft. Not much of a competition. Troy himself approached Jimmy and stated his displeasure having to compete with Walsh. The team kept the better QB.

jterrell;1873936 said:
Jimmy provided the info that yielded such great drafts especially on defense but Troy Aikman was a done deal from a marketing standpoint. Jerry was not going to allow anyone else to be drafted. Even prior to(possibly during) that horrid 1 win season when asked about granting the number 12 to any player ever Jerry said only if UCLA's QB(Aikman) is there when we draft and he wants it.

And yet Jerry did allow Walsh to be drafted that SAME off-season (1989) with our 1st pick.

Also, our one win season was after we drafted Aikman. We won three games the season prior.

Jimmy was also targeting linebacker James Francis when he ended up with Emmitt Smith. He only drafted Emmitt after Joe Brodsky literally stood on a table yelling at them to trade up and draft him. Brodsky had watched Emmitt every since his sophomore year of high school and had recruited him out of high school.

What Jimmy did well both here and with the Dolphins was draft defensive backs. He may be the foremost defensive back expert in the nation.

Jimmy/Jerry were not perfect and missed on some 1st day picks. The draft is sometimes about the luck of the draw and who falls into your lap (see Michael Irvin). Now, I don't remember exactly, but Francis (I believe) was gone before the Cowboys picked so someone thought highly of him. But yeah, I remember hearing that Jimmy liked him.

I didn't say Jerry is a buffoon. I just know that when he brings in talented people like Jimmy and Bill and stops overly meddling in personnel we've had our best seasons. When Jerry and Lacewell ran things and he hired his puppet HC's, we gradually fell into the depths of the league.

It took those 3 straight 5-11 seasons for Jerry to realize his way wasn't working and that he needed to bring in someone to get the organization back on track.

I give Jerry alot of credit for hiring Jimmy in the early days and letting him and the staff do their jobs. I also give him alot of credit for the demise of the team in the late '90's. I also give him credit for realizing his way wasn't working and for bringing in a known commodity like Parcells and letting him have the power to do his job and turn things back around.

Anyone who thinks Jerry was making most of the decisions when Jimmy was here and the last few years is totally clueless. It's no coincidence that we've had our best years when Jerry surrounded himself with quality football men.

Why would it affect it? Shouldn't we always be trying to find the best players we can regardless or where we pick?

What affected our drafts was we had guys like Jerry and Lacewell making the decisions and they also went with the philosophy in the mid 90's of drafting for need and for projects with potential instead of drafting best available.

If it makes you feel any better, if Andy Reid and Tom Heckert were running the show here, we would have had LJ Smith, Ryan Moats, and Winston Justice instead of Jason Witten, Marion Barber, and Marc Columbo.

Jerry needs to fire himself and let Ireland run the show!
Even that wouldn't work.

It was in one of the blogs a while back, as long as Jerry Jones is owner, he would have final say over any decision even if he hired a 'GM.' Jones said the NFL wouldn't let him hire Jeff Ireland as GM because of this.

Huh? What does Reid have to do with it?

Parcells was here when we drafted Witten, Barber and signed Columbo.

What?

An owner can't hire a GM? Where'd you hear this foolishness?
