Being a HC is a tough profession every HC is a product of the players they have especially their QB. There's never been a great HC who had bad players or who didn't have at least a solid QB. Belichick was just another head coach in Cleveland and was nothing special in NE until Brady took over for Bledsoe. Belichick went 5-11 his final year in Cleveland in 95. He started off 5-11 in NE in 2000 and started the 2001 season 0-2 before his life changed with Bledsoe going down and Brady taking over. The fate of most head coaches are tied to the QB they have. Joe Gibbs and Bill Parcells are 2 of the only "great" head coaches I can think of off the top of my head who didn't have HOF QB's.
As for Garrett's past relationship with Kiffin I'm sure that played a role in Kiffin being in Dallas but what probably played an even bigger role was Kiffin's reputation he gained from having a great defense in Tampa that helped lead the Bucs to a SB win. Kiffin certainly wouldn't be here especially at his advanced age if he hadn't built such a great defense in Tampa a decade ago. Certainly no guarantee's it's going to workout with Kiffin he's an old man who's been out of the NFL for 4 years so Garret's fate is also going to be tied to his performance. Garrett lobbied for Kiffin so the defense better show improvement.
Putting a team together is more than a QB if you can't figure that out don't bother. A sport that is called the ultimate team sports is more than a fricken QB. If you don't don't think a HC deserves at least 3 years then fine that is you that is your view and one I don't share. I have no special loyalty to Garrett only a respect for the profession he is in.
