Garrett's confused coaching

I don't know how much I buy what you said earlier; I think Garrett is getting raked over the coals for a loss where we gave up over 600 yards with a 4th string DL.

For the bolded part, though, I think a lot. I say this anecdotally only because I feel like I have watched very closely the way this team has been built with Parcells, Phillips and then Garrett. I feel like each of those three eras felt very different to me, regardless of Jerry Jones involvement.

He is being raked over the coals because he lost a game that he would've won just by having his qb take a knee.

You see it all over the league every Sunday.

All 32 team message boards say the same thing about their coaches.

Second guessing is easy.

I don't think too many saints fans, or patriots fans are saying the same thing about their coach on a week by week basis.

Garrett has been proving for the past few years that he is simply not head coaching material.

He is so over his head right now, its not even funny.

Fine. Then Tyron Smith gets the same blame for the hold.

First of all if you are going to run a play like that, you need to tell your o line, that whatever happens out there, under no circumstances do you even put yourself in a position to get called for a hold, let the guy go if you have to.

I don't think a head coach in the 45 seconds to run a play has a chance to tell the team every last scenario of dos and dont's. Considering that was our second penalty of the game, I'm pretty sure Smith knows holding is not something that is smart to do.

I don't know if I buy into your analogies because there are plenty of people who are excellent at both the chess AND then motivational aspects of the game. My take on Garrett is that I think he is an excellent strategist, but a poor tactician. He gets the big picture very, very well, but making the right little decisions on the fly just hurt him. We are a far better team without him calling the plays but he just doesn't have the knack for making the right call over and over again.

This is pretty spot on with how I feel about Garrett. He seems to talk it and get it in press conferences but when it comes to making that decision he usually makes the wrong one. Sometimes that's luck or unlucky in his case. A defended pass or a sack during Detroit's last drive and some people are praising Garrett's decisions at end.

Its situational awareness that you teach in training camp and in practice. Of course in the heat of the moment smith isn't trying to hold, but you need to realize in that situation that an 8 yard loss is a heck of alot better than getting a penalty in that situation.

Name one redeeming quality Garrett gives you as a head coach........ and don't give me the old RKG argument. Any idiot can say that.

What does he bring to the table that shows you he has what it takes to get us to the next level?

He has red hair

He's got a sweet smile on his face when we lose and is the best clapper in the league.

The average league-wide win differential in kneel-down v. running play in that situation suggest, if our team performed at the league average in this situation, we just lost .10 of a winning-point. That's, like .30 of a point in this quarter's decisions, alone.

Meanwhile, our pass defense just gave up another 7 points. And it has been doing so, every week, for the last, what, 50 game weeks?

How 'bout we find some way to bandage the patient's gaping chest wound before we worry some more about clipping his toenails?

And whose bright idea was it to hire this relic?

And many of those coaches flat-out suck too, like Garrett, but probably not as bad... What's your point?

Not really, because as Sturm speculates, they cold have been playing for the field goal anyways. He says that it could have been drilled to the team by the coaches. His hold supposedly did not affect hat.

Okay here's one - and by the way I'm not a defender of Garrett but he possess this and I believe it's pretty important. Brad Sham recently said that Garrett is the closest thing to Landry he's seen since he's been around the Cowboys (a long time). When Garrett walks into a meeting room it goes silent, not a word. He commands the respect of the people in it whether it be players or coaches. I believe that is earned not given and no matter how much you may hate him, that's a big thing in today's NFL.

As someone said I think he is a good big picture organizational coach who has trouble with strategy. But, from a purely subjective stance, you don't get to where he is without redeeming qualities.

You're smarter than that Sarge.

Brad Sham is a Garrett homer, just like Babe Laufenburg.. How does he know what's going on the Cowboys meetings when that's closed to the media?

LOL, where did you hear Sham claiming that nonsense?

Brad must have been referring to waistlines. That's the only way Garrett is like Landry.
