I can't see GB paying 13M for a backup QB. I say they trade him to get something in return...they own his rights. Favre may make any trade conditional or stay retired.

Restructure his deal. He doesn't have a choice, restructure and be part of GB or stay retired.

PACKERS: WE’VE MOVED FORWARD
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 11, 2008, 5:17 p.m.
Two hours after ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that Brett Favre had asked the Packers for his release, the team released a statement on the story.

The Packers’ statement opens by stressing that it was Favre’s decision to retire, and even says “we wanted him to return and welcomed him back.”

But the statement also says “the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team.” Although the Packers don’t come right out and say it, the “move forward” language implies that the team would no longer welcome Favre back.

The statement acknowledges that Favre has the right to ask to be reinstated, and it says that if he does, “he would become an active member of the Green Bay Packers.”

That, however, doesn’t mean he’d stay an active member of the Green Bay Packers. And the terse tone of the statement suggests that the team doesn’t want Favre to be an active member of the Green Bay Packers this year.

The full statement is below:
The Green Bay Packers are aware of the latest developments regarding Brett Favre.

Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms. We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion.

Brett’s press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement.

The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team.

As a retired player, Brett has the option to apply for reinstatement with Commissioner Goodell. If that were to occur, he would become an active member of the Green Bay Packers. As always, the Packers will do what’s right and in the best interest of the team.

As with all Packers greats, Brett’s legacy will always be celebrated by our fans and the organization, regardless of any change in his personal intentions.

Brett and Deanna will always be a part of the Packers family.

I see both sides to this equation

How do you see both sides? I retire. No I don't. I'm sorry, yes I do. It's like getting left at the alter and then she changes her mind and you reschedule the marriage and then she doesn’t show up again, and then calls and say I'm sorry, let's get married.

This is so immature of Brett. If he was a real team player, he would let them move on. But his not! His is a selfish S.O.B.!

Enough said!

No way Green Bay lets him be a burr in their collective rear ends and be a gigantic distraction on their season, much less pay him $12 million dollars to do it.

I'm pretty sure someone will trade a late round draft pick for him (he'll be a ticket draw for some bad franchise who currently doesn't have a QB, if nothing else). Green Bay just wants control over where he goes. They just want to make sure he doesn't go to Chicago or Minnesota.

right, so Favre is going to sit and be a backup?

right.

Brett put the Pack in a bad place here but if he wants to continue to play and is OK doing it somewhere else I don't see how they can justify not letting him.

In the end they will trade him to an AFC team.

I kinda think that they really "owe" it to him to release him. Just like Jerry said about .... I think it may have been Troy .... if he's unhappy I would release him so he could find his best fit elsewhere.

Late round pick, LOL!!! GB will ask for a first round pick. This isn't going to be pretty.

Wrong.

Farve does not have to restructure his deal. If the Packers do not like the terms and Brett is not willing to renegotiate then they have to pay him or release him. The signed contract helps and hurts both sides because they both can use is as leverage.

Good for them. "You play for us or no one." And he can't file a grievance with the league because they own his rights lock, stock and barrel.
If it's us or no one, then let the guy play, otherwise cut him. It's stupid to say we don't want you and you can't play elsewhere.

That's what I have been saying all along. I am glad this is happening because when training camp opens most of the focus will be on the Packers at least at the beginning. Instead of the usual let's focus on TO, Pacman, Roy,Romo-Jessica crap that will be on Sportscenter every night until the first regular season game.

GB has the ball in their own court, not Farve.

He's going to the Commanders to collect one last paycheck like Bruce Smith and Deion did and many others.

Lord knows the Commanders need him. Favre is 1000x better than that piece of garbage Jason QCampbell.

Actually, Favre has the leverage. He can apply and they will be forced to either reinstate him, trade him, or reinstate him. No team can force a player to stay retired.

Farve has a $12M ball in his hand. It is up to the Packers what he does with it.

The point being he does not have to renegotiate like you think he does.

This whole thing sucks.

Favre is going to win no matter what because he will be playing football next year.

The Packers are going to lose no matter what because they are telling Favre he isn't the starting QB anymore.

Very weird situation.
