Genuine outrage

It really is hilarious how the ones who are most likely to just regurgitate groupthink believe they're the outside the box freethinkers who are "tellin' it like it is". The same people writing post after post after post acting like Phil Costa alone was the biggest problem on the OL is utterly ridiculous. Gawd, it would so easy to live in this simplistic world where just replacing Costa would have magically solved all our problems.

We're not laughing at you because you're "not a homer", we're laughing at you because your opinion is ill founded and dumb.

As opposed to those who believe a lineman is fine so long as they don't give up a sack?

You do realize that the VAST majority of o-line mistakes do not result in sacks, right? It's the disruption of the offense that most often results, and what that video doesn't show are the dozens upon dozens of times in which Costa gave Romo less time to find a receiver with a bad snap or forced him to roll out immediately and make a play outside the pocket. No, it is in fact YOU who has the overly simplistic view of the situation believing that a center's ability is dictated solely by the number of one on one matchup mistakes which result in sacks.

And no, Costa wasnt the only problem. Kosier was very poor and our other guard spot was a mismash until Holland came in an provided decent play down the stretch.

If this was a Doug Free thread, I'm am sure he would get blasted. Getting off-topic is frowned upon. This thing needs fixed one step at a time. Costa is the first step and most glaring problem, but feel free to defend him.

Don't be lazy watch the video.

I've seen a compilation of our 2011 sacks before and I don't know what you're trying to prove other than you have a simplistic view of o-line play. Nobody, least of all me, has said their opinion of Costa is determined by the number of sacks he did or did not give up.

Doug Free gave up more sacks. Why? Because he was going against faster edge rushers from Romo's blindside. Costa was going against interior linemen, who are both easier for a QB to evade and more visible to them when they create pressure. Romo evaded numerous pressures due to Costa's ineptitude, whereas avoiding an edge rusher is far more difficult if the QB even sees them at all.

I have zero problem thinking they want to upgrade over Costa. That doesn't mean they don't feel Costa can be adequate. I also think they are hoping to bring in competition at C and end up with at least a starter and a decent backup.

Tackles giving up more sacks than interior linemen? Unheard of. The fact that the positions are being compared is a head scratcher.

And that might be true, but I've seen several people claim the staff is giving Costa ringing endorsements and that just isn't true. There's coach speak and position shuffling, that's it.

However, I seriously question our coaches if they believe Costa can be adequete based on his performance, as everybody writing about camp has said he has been no better than last year.

So the staff is desperately shuffling centers in an attempt to find an answer and yet they disagree?

Aside from coachspeak, none of their actions indicate they have any confidence in him.

We're down two centers, so, yeah. You shouldn't even be making me type that out.

We ignored multiple quality available centers in pro free agency, didn't draft one even though there were three capable candidates in the draft, and haven't added one yet this season unless you want to count Loper's experience at the position. Yeah, I think it's safe to say their actions indicated they have confidence in him.

You can choose to interpret the lack of outrage on the part of the coaching staff as 'coach speak' if you care to. Maybe you're right, and they're faking it and are secretly in agreement with you. I guess we'll never know.

So you hang on the word of football insights of Calvin Watkins.

This explains a lot.

most of the tweets i've read about costa in tc have been negative.

He praised him for the things he could and left any negatives if any out. I agree. He wouldn't say the positive things if they weren't true. He's getting better, working hard and is trainable in that he doesn't repeat correctable mistakes.

It's a learning process to become a real "football guy", afterall Dallas was one pick from Max Unger and would have taken him with the next choice.

However moving on you can't deny that Costa played better than Al Johnson ever played or Matt Lehr, or Clay Shiver, or Rogers or even Peterman... and then Kawaloski and Nagy may have played even better than Costa.

I wonder what the story is behind Killer. He played much better than Costa in the games that he filled in, but Costa remained the starter and Killer is very rarely mentioned by the coaching staff. Killer must not practice well or he has some issues that have not been made public.

I'll deny the hell out of that. Give me Matt Lehr in a heartbeat.

He was in the league 3 or 4 years? How many did he start?

Costa may have a place in the NFL for awhile.

Costa is the worst starting player I've seen here since the mid 80's.

Not players who were forced to start by injury but week 1 penciled in starting players. I've never seen a guy with less pro ability starting for us. I've said it before. Watching him play, it's like the Cowboys are letting a random fan from the stands play C for us that week.

His only place in the NFL is playing for Jerry Jones. He'd have a cup of coffee somewhere else and be out of the league within a year. This is a guy who wouldn't shine in NFL Europe and he's snapping the football to Tony Romo on Sundays. It's a complete joke.

Lehr was in the league for 8 seasons and started over 50 games.

There were a couple guys here during the Campo years who were awful but Costa is up there with anyone that I've seen since I started watching in the early 90s.

I just don't remember anyone who gets so consistently dominated and manhandled like Costa has.

Doesn't matter, it doesn't make his statement anymore true

"Costa doesn't make the same mistake twice"

This one isn't hard to figure out.

who was the line coach then? Who was the line coach who made the statement?

They are the experiences of two different men.

Maybe Callahan is overstating his coaching ability or perhaps he is better at conveying information.

Essentially you are doing what fans typically do: think they are more qualified to make such evaluations or assume they are intentionally misleading us.

At least Cowboys fans aren't as bad as Red Sox fans.

Alan Ball
Keith Davis
Corey Proctor
Rob Pettitte
Solomon Page
Duane Hawthorne

All come immediately to mind. At least Costa got better.
