Genuine outrage

I felt that the way we went into last season was an absolutely insane thing to do. Four position changes out of the 5 spots.

We rolled out Free at left tackle,....his 1st time playing there I might add. 7th round rookie Bill Nagy at left guard, undrafted free agent Costa at center,..Kosier at right guard, and 1st round rookie Tyron Smith at right tackle.

Season was over before it even began. To say nothing of the complete and utter lack of a running game in the redzone and the brutal beatdown Romo took most of the year.

IMO the only REAL answer would be to trade for a quality type starting center. Some plug in guy or washed up old free agent that nobody wants isnt going to cut it. Sure......they might be marginally better than Costa, but that really isnt going to fix anything.

We need someone who can come in, start, and be the glue that binds that whole interior together. Some scrub or has been does not have the ability to do that.

We either get serious and DO SOMETHING about it or this season will be much like last year.

That's not saying much they only beat three teams with a winning record.

And... we only beat one team with a winning record, I believe, there were few good teams and many horrible teams last year.

We're down two centers, so, yeah. You shouldn't even be making me type that out.

We ignored multiple quality available centers in pro free agency, didn't draft one even though there were three capable candidates in the draft, and haven't added one yet this season unless you want to count Loper's experience at the position. Yeah, I think it's safe to say their actions indicated they have confidence in him.

You can choose to interpret the lack of outrage on the part of the coaching staff as 'coach speak' if you care to. Maybe you're right, and they're faking it and are secretly in agreement with you. I guess we'll never know.

We where doing the same at the safety position for years, coaches showing confidence in Costa doesn't really end the debate, just last year Ryan was raving about how good Newman, Spears and Coleman was

This one isn't hard to figure out.

who was the line coach then? Who was the line coach who made the statement?

They are the experiences of two different men.

Maybe Callahan is overstating his coaching ability or perhaps he is better at conveying information.

Essentially you are doing what fans typically do: think they are more qualified to make such evaluations or assume they are intentionally misleading us.

At least Cowboys fans aren't as bad as Red Sox fans.

Riiiiight that's what i am doing :laugh2:

That is true, but few would be this horrible. The guy isn't an NFL starter, period.

That is my feeling towards the mindset that it is in any way acceptable to have Phil Costa snapping the ball to Tony Romo. Costa is to the center position what Tyler Perry is to comedy, a waste of space who is atrocious at his chosen craft yet for some unknown reason is beloved and defended by large groups of people.

We have championship aspirations and yet our front office and coaching staff are still considering starting Costa at center? Costa has no right to even be on the team much less starting, and continuing to risk the health of a great player like Romo over this stiff is appalling amost beyond comprehension.

Whether it be Bernadeau, Arkin, ANYBODY ELSE...this staff has to find a way to find someone better. It is a necessity. No longer should Romo be forced to jump up and catch his horrible snaps, no longer should he have to scramble the moment he gets the ball because a defensive tackle tossed Costa aside like a fifth grader and no longer should our backs be forced to bounce it outside because t-rex arms couldn't hold a block for longer than half a second.

Just on bare observations, and last year to go off one does have some trouble if he were to attempt to disprove your gut feelings.

To add only frustrations, it could be noted as well, that along with the questioning of whether a hypothetical window is closing, is an additional view that almost NO Super Bowl team has made it there with dominant question marks in the interior of it's offensive line.

Just using common sense touchstones, those are some big obstacles.

Now, in the midst of those agitating reasons, we are additionally faced with 18 downed Cowboy players.

That's enough frustrations to make one figure a Mother would give up on a child...but then again, we are fans, and we know that a Mother NEVER gives up on a child if she is worth HER salt.

That is exactly the situation for this current coaching staff and their players.

The reasons for the changes that were taken, were sound. I know, the eye test left some red eyes to present. But still, what was done had sound reasons behind it. I still have to believe in those.

Hey, it took a Flozell Adams and Leonard Davis to drive block and force issues in the past. Today, and on this squad, are talents of a similar function. That is, that can positively push for real estate and create running ability to expand effectiveness of a potentially great passing team.

The question to this fan, is how long that process will take. Bringing in veterans has to be weighed against the directional effect upon achieving those same abilities, but over a longer period covered.

To me, no doubt, the season winds around the stability in the here and now, of that offensive line's interior. Now comes the difficult part, in determining developmental projections for this very season.

A large portion of fans, will be hard pressed to weather extended periods of disruption and disappointment up front and in full view by all watching a game.

But in weighing the additions of even a Gurode, Kozier, or Holland to the mix, he has to also project whether or not those early alternatives will even be able to hand a 'black and blue' month of December and carry the team into the playoffs, which is up front and paramount right now.

Just being realistic, now exactly who is going to give up at a minimum, a premium backup center?

I just don't remember anyone who gets so consistently dominated and manhandled like Costa has.

That's only because Nagy got injured so soon. I kid, I kid!

Only sort of.

Costa is here because the coaching staff thinks he can do the job if they didn't they would have sent him packing. I know you think you know better fine but you don't, having an opinion is one thing trying to put your self out there as some resident expert is a joke.

does the coaching staff really thinks he can do the job.....or is Jerry telling them to make it work? You remember Jerry raving about Alan Ball? Here is what I know....the opposition salivates at going against him. Is it possible for someone to be worse than Clay Shiver? I know you cannot have steak at every position....but just like teams would game plan an entire attack on guys like Bradie James.....teams can game plan on attacking the Center position for the Dallas Cowboys. You don't have to be a Pro Bowler...but you have to be an NFL starter to start for a NFL team that has Super Bowl aspirations.

I don't think Jerry is telling anyone who plays or not, even Jones has said he does not tell the coaches who plays and who doesn't. I think you guys put way to much into blaming Jones.

Garrett has him in there competing because they feel he can play. I'm not going to sit here and say he will or will not develop into a solid center I think the jury is still out on that but I do know we are talking about a young player who in his 2nd season was put in the starting role and now people claim he can't do the job? based on what their expert view or the fact that so many people have no patients when it comes to developing players.

I hear you...but I am just dumbdounded that in the prime of Romos career....after all the searching we did for Troys replacement....that we find ourselves in this position with the OL. For these guys to admit that they did not have an OL last year that matched up well with the NFC East. I mean these are not my opinions....although it was obvious to me EARLY on...these are the opinions of the GM/coaching staff.

I hear the term "progress stopper" used all the time...and I get it if you are a rebuilding team. But when I think about how much better they looked when a healhty Holland played last year....when we see the dedication Holland put in this offseason....and to hear we are fighting with him over playing incentives....I simply don't get it. I do know we had no problems forking over free agent dollars to a couple of cats this offseason...and how much better have they or do they look than Holland. The bottom line is the indifference to the interior of the OL. I know Rome was not built in a day...but if you have Super Bowl aspirations (and we should)...you HAVE to give Romo a chance....and I simply think we do not make it out of the NFC East if you have guys that have no business starting football games in your starting lineup.

I agree they need to play better and I think these young guys will improve I don't think the coaches are wasting their time on them. I would have liked to added more to the OL but I think people are giving up on these guys way to early.

i don't get the Tyler Perry comparison. People obviously like Tyler Perry's films. Because you don't like them that makes them bad?

It always takes Jerry 2 years to address major problems. Costa is horrid. Hopefully the team sees this instantly.

I'll wait for the pre-season to start before I judge any of these guys including Costa.

It's a new year and all I care about with this team is the results when the lights come on.

I agree completely that the fact that the organization believes something obviously doesn't mean they're right. What it does mean, in my book, is that it's silly to get outraged over a player being on the roster when a lot of smart people obviously disagree with you.

I'm on record that I think the team should have brought in another starting-quality OC this year. Going with Costa/Kowalski/Nagy is as dangerous as not upgrading our CB corps was last season.

I wanted a center drafted this year, too, but maybe the front office and coaches have more insight into the future prospects of "scrubs" than we do.

I expect you wanted to get rid of those scrubs, Romo and Austin, too. If you are a draft snob, maybe you still do.

:)

Well said.

Costa is 20% of the offensive line and should be evaluated as part of a unit. Like it or not, he's the best option for now and the future until they find (draft) someone better.
