Don't count on Strahan replacing Osi
If Osi Umenyiora is forced to miss any significant amount of time due to the knee injury he suffered last night, Michael Strahan would be the perfect person to step in and replace him.
But that’s almost certainly not going to happen.
Multiple sources close to the defensive end said today that it’s “doubtful” Strahan would consider returning to the NFL, even if the Giants stepped up and offered him the $8 million he was seeking to play one more season. He’s too happy in his new life as an analyst for Fox, the sources said, and he apparently meant it when he said “I don’t miss it” during a
visit to Giants’ training camp training camp in Albany earlier this month.
“I doubt he’d consider it,” one source said. “I don’t think we’re going to see any Favres here.”
Still, the possibility is tantalizing, especially since Giants GM Jerry Reese appeared to leave open the possibility when he was asked about it last night.
“Brett Favre is playing for the Jets,”
Reese said. “Anything can happen in personnel.”
That, however, is a pretty standard response from Reese when asked about player moves - real or hypothetical. It’s not necessarily a signal to start reading between the lines.
There was some speculation by at least one friend of Strahan that Giants co-owner Steve Tisch would lead the charge to bring him back if Umenyiora’s injury became a long-term thing. Tisch was believed to be in favor of paying Strahan close to $8 million to come back and play in 2008, and the two have grown fairly close over the last few years. But even if that was the case, Strahan likely wouldn’t even be ready to return on such short notice. Yes, he showed up the Monday before the season opener last year and still managed to play on opening night in Dallas. But while he was pondering retirement last summer he was still going through his usual football workouts just in case he decided to return.
Since retiring on June 9, according to those sources, Strahan has dropped about 10 pounds from his last playing weight of about 255, and he’s changed his workout regime. With the season opener just 11 days away, it’s doubtful he’d be ready in time to face the Washington Commanders on Sept. 4. And remember, despite all his offseason workouts, it still took him a good three weeks last year before he was really in football shape. Now, at age 37, it would likely take even longer than that.
So if Umenyiora is forced to the sidelines, the Giants would likely go with internal options instead - either sliding defensive ends Dave Tollefson or Renaldo Wynn into his spot, or moving linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end and perhaps shifting Danny Clark or inserting rookie Bryan Kehl into Kiwanuka’s vacated spot on the strong side.
Of course, for the moment, that’s all just speculation since it’s still not clear how serious Umenyiora’s injury is. He had the MRI on his left knee earlier today, but everyone is still apparently waiting for the doctors to review the results. Tom Coughlin has a conference call scheduled with reporters at 4:15 p.m., but there’s no guarantee there’ll be any definitive news by then.
