Giants' Umenyiora requires season-ending knee surgery

Associated Press
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will have season-ending surgery on his injured left knee Tuesday.

Umenyiora was hurt in the second quarter of Saturday's preseason game against the New York Jets, and Dr. Russell Warren told the team on Sunday that an MRI found a tear in his lateral meniscus.

"It was obviously the news that I did not want to hear," coach Tom Coughlin said. "But after listening to the explanation and Dr. Warren's thoughts on it, I am convinced that this
is the right procedure and the right way to go."
The normal recovery lasts four months, Coughlin said, adding that a non-surgical option was not discussed.

The loss is a major one for the Super Bowl champions in the wake of the retirement of seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan a few months ago.

Coughlin said the team is considering all its options when asked whether the Super Bowl champions were interested in luring the 36-year-old out of retirement.

Coughlin recently talked with Strahan about his new career working on Sundays for FOX Sports.

"The only thing I talked with Michael about was his new challenge, moving forward in his new assignment and he was very excited about that," Coughlin said.

Strahan, meanwhile, is currently on vacation and hasn't heard from the Giants. On the possibility he would return to the Giants, Strahan told NFL Network's Adam Schefter: "I haven't heard from anybody else so to say if I would or wouldn't is premature. So I'm enjoying my retired life right now."
This is not the first time Umenyiora has required surgery to repair cartilage damage in his left knee. He underwent arthroscopic surgery for the same problem at Troy State.

Umenyiora started all 16 games last season and had 52 tackles and a team-high 13 sacks. He added seven tackles in the Giants' playoff run to the Super Bowl.

The Giants are now a bit thin at defensive end. Justin Tuck has replaced Strahan and New York signed veteran Renaldo Wynn in the offseason.
With Umenyiora out, the Giants have to consider moving strongside linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end. He was switched to linebacker last year so the team could put its best 11 players on the field.
"I haven't had a chance to talk to him so I am not going to comment on that," Coughlin said.

I love our rivals and wish the best for them, because it only brings out the best in the Cowboys. What fun is it to beat the 'Skins or Eagles 49-0?

The best game I've ever seen was the last game of the '79 season. Best comeback ever against a great 'Skins team in the last two minutes, after being down 34-21. Two TDs by Staubach.

I felt Osi was one of their good guys.:(

This just further adds to the Super Bowl or bust pressure that the Cowboys are going to have to play through all year. I hope the players.. but also, the coaches are up for the challenge.. They are going to get the other team's best shot every single week.

Yes, Dallas has had its fair share of injuries as well. Glenn, Ferguson and Newman immediately come to mind--but that was last year, I don't want any more injuries this year. Austin and Kosier is enough suffering already!

GIANTS HAVE MORE THAN $12 MILLION IN CAP SPACE

Posted by Mike Florio on August 24, 2008, 7:24 p.m.
We’re told that the New York Giants will embark on possible strategies for replacing defensive end Osi Umenyiora with more than $12 million in 2008 cap space.
And that gives them more than enough cushion to pursue Michael Strahan, if they so choose.
Strahan had been due to earn $4 million in 2008. He reportedly wanted $8 million to return. Now that he has moved on with his life, and now that the Giants have a clear need for his services, Strahan’s price tag surely we’ll increase.
As we mentioned earlier in the day, the Jets are paying Brett Favre $12 million for 2008. Our guess is that Strahan will want the same amount in order to bail out Big Blue.

Good, let them throw/sink all that money, 8-12 mil, for gappy. That's just less money they can roll into next year. Extra cash next year is at a premium due to the axing of the labor agreement.

:starspin Sorry if this has already been posted on here, but I just saw on Fox that Giants Umenyiora is out for the season due to a knee injury. Between Strahan retiring, and now Umenyiora being lost for the season, I would think that that would have to have a fairly significant impact on the Giants pass rush this year.

NY Post is reporting that they're moving Kiwi back to DE and not pursuing Strahan.

That changes a lot of their system. But for some reason, I think they will still get pressure. They've got a great defensive coach there.

Well there you go.

The G-Men without both Osi and Strahan will certainly look different this year. Giant fan must be melting down.

Makes sense, but regardless, they've lost major depth. And Osi is better than Kiwanuka.

I think they should do both, move Kiwanuka back to end and pursue Strahan. Unless he's all fat and **** now.

It was a freak accident. Whether pre-season or regular season, he just took a funny step. I don't think that it's the type of injury that can be avoided by any means other than not playing at all.

It's that turf they were playing on. And yes, I would have opted not to play the guy at all, especially on that turf. He looked really good against Cleveland, knocking Derek Anderson out of the game. He didn't need any more preseason work.
