Not much to see here -this was the report last year and the Skins didn't have to get rid of anyone of substance to get under the cap. this is simply a product of how they structure deals and not a real indication of their cap situation.

I don't watch skin games unless we play them but, from what i seen when we play them he does sometimes, but who does not against us? JK but really though the guy has a nack for the ball, i would take him over henry or reeves anyday..

Based on what?

Henry played in 13 games, starting in only 10, and had 6 ints, including one for a TD, and 13 passes defensed. Springs had 16 games, starting in 14, and had 4 ints, no TDs, and 15 passes defensed.

Do you just like the way he fills out his pants or something?

But it is a 10 year mortgage. ;) Just because you guys been doing it for 8 years, does that mean it might not eventually be time to pay up?

Is that $23 mil taking into account a rise in the salary cap next year? Have they announced what next season's cap will be?

Sorry guys, like I said in another post, I used to get worried about the salary cap but I just don't anymore. The salary cap is easily manipulated by people with experience doing it. The sky is not falling, I have heard this time and time again, enough already.

10 year mortgage? Are you serious? You really think that we are still going to have to pay for contracts and/or bonuses given to Bruce Smith and Deion Sanders in 2010?

Dream on, homer...

The Skins were already showing signs of feeling the cap pinch last year... just look at the players they brought in--

Randall Godfrey, 34 years old...
Pete Kendall, 34 years old...
Jason Fabini, 33 years old...
London Fletcher, 32 years old...
Fred Smoot, 28 years old...

Rather than shopping among the league's marquee free agents, the Skins were forced to rummage through the bargain barrel, looking for retreads that they might be able to coax another season or two out of... this is the hallmark of a team in cap trouble...

Oh, they WANTED to do better than that, they looked into trying to acquire Lance Briggs, they tried to sign Leonard Davis... but they didn't have the money to get deals done with the "name" players available...

And their cap situation will prevent them from being major players in free agency again this year... it's funny, really, watching you guys trying to spin the Skins' cap situation, when the plain truth is they have the worst cap situation of all 32 teams going into the offseason... yes, they have moves they can make to bring their cap situation more into line, but every team out there has similar moves available to them... so the Skins go into this offseason at a competitive disadvantage on the free agent market, in that they have less cap room than any other team out there...

They might be able to make a few, lesser moves, but they will have less flexibility to improve their roster than any other team...

Burgundy, you are wrong. It has cost you and it will cost you. Even if you do not want to admit it. The age factor, lack of depth, etc.

Very well put, SB!

Thank God JJ has learned his lessons . . . . doesn't appear Snyder has, which is good for us.

Think about it. How many veteran players on their team WOULDN'T they cut to get under the cap, if needed?

Every year, they overpay a bunch of mediocre free agents, have a mediocre season, then cut overpaid players to get back under the cap. Then the cycle begins again. And their delusional fans think they don't have any cap problems whatsoever. I guess they haven't noticed that they have the oldest team in the NFL, their last division title came in 1999, and they haven't posted back-to-back winning seasons since 1992 because they can't afford to keep players and create any roster continuity.

Adam-what's the true status of Cooley's contract? Some places report that he has an $11 million roster bonus due, while most claim that he signed for $14 million guaranteed, 7M in '07 & 7M in '08.

Also what about Sean Taylor? Will he be treated as though he had retired early? I think releasing him would increase their cap number by about $2.3 million.

Unfortunately for the Skins, indeed Taylor's accelerate into next year's cap as though he had retired. There is no relief, from what had been reported earlier, for the death of a player. It's more or less treated as a career threatening injury and accelerated onto the cap. Though, I believe that Taylor was in the latter years of his rookie contract.

And exactly what has your team accomplished in the last 8 years, besides all those offseason championships?

Yes, I agree with this! They are fine, sitting at home, wondering just how in the hell can they ever be as successful as the Cowboys!

Just because you have barely enough money to field a team DOES NOT MEAN that team is worth a crap...as evidenced by the Commanders!

Stop making a fool of yourself...we DO have a few good Commanders fans on this board and all you are doing is embarassing them.

That's unfortunate, but it's the way it is. Taylor isn't the first player to die, though he's probably the most well-known.

It's that way in other sports, too, I believe. I know in the NBA, the Celtics had to pay for Reggie Lewis' contract for years after he was dead, with no cap relief.

For 2006 the Commanders had to release Walt Harris because they couldn't afford him because of their cap situation. The Skins pass defense was atrocious that year and Harris went to the Pro Bowl. Then in 2007 the Skins were outbid by the Bills for Derrick Dockery's services because of the Skins cap situation. The Skins could have used Dockery given the injuries to the O-Line.

Yep, no cap problems at all.

YAKUZA

Yakuza, you forget that they have such a huge bunch of draft picks to replace these guys with.

[/sarcasm off]
:laugh2:

Seriously, the big jumps the cap has been taking help to minimize the impact and Danny Boy can always continue to mortgage future years just like he has been. It does cause them to get real creative with contracts, however.
