Sources have indicated that the market for kicker Adam Vinatieri likely will be affected by the free agent contract signed by Ryan Longwell in Minnesota. Vinatieri was believed to be disappointed by the five-year, $10 million contract signed by Longwell, which included a $3 million signing bonus.

Longwell's deal, averaging $2 million per year, represents the top of the market for kickers. Vinatieri will command more money than that, but teams might be unlikely to jump too much higher over that figure.

Vinatieri made $2.5 million on a one-year contract in 2005. The Patriots could have retained him in 2006 by using the franchise tag, which would have meant a one-year deal for $3 million.

Agent Ken Harris, who represents the other proven cold-weather kicker on the market (Paul Edinger), initially believed Vinatieri would set the tone for all deals. But when Longwell signed with the Vikings and Matt Bryant re-upped with the Buccaneers over the weekend, two potential suitors for Vinatieri were off the market.

Green Bay, Dallas, Atlanta, Indianapolis, and New England all are seeking kickers.

I think this is why Bill and JJ didn't jump out on Day 1. Let the market set the price.. not the player. I still dont see us giving up 3 mill per to sign a kicker.. I just dont see it. But i am hoping I am wrong. i look for us to head into camp with no proven kicker on the roster.. just my gut feeling.. and I hope I am wrong.

We will sign V for 5 yrs, 12mil and 2.5mil signing bonus, then NE will match it and we end with Edinger...

i dunno man, that's a lot of dough for a kicker

is vinatieri a rfa? why would new england have the chance to match it? if he is going to use us to negotiate a contract for new england to match, then why even bother negotiate with him?

Lets stop with Cliche's -

1) Salary Cap went up from $85M to $102M.
2) Paying a critical kicking need is sound (effects 4-5 games) $3M is nothing
3) You don't pay FS
4) You don't pay for DT depth - Fergi was paid

Lets face it - we were beat out of the gate by NFL. We can lament and explain it away. Potential targets to spend $20M on are dwindling. If our plan was to save it because rest of NFL has gone mad, lets just say that JJ and man up like Indi did. We are acting like a small market team here.

if we werent interested in paying 2mils a yr for Longwell, I doubt we'll be paying more to get Vinateri either

You don't pay free safeties. Arguably its the least important position on the defense.

Somewhere in the draft other than first round or sign a guy to a reasonable price.

Who was the last free safety to break the bank?

I absolutely agree. How any Dallas fan can still underestimate the value of a kicker after last season is mindboggling to me! Believe me, I can't stand kickers and the whole idea of some little soccer player coming onto the field and deciding a game - but it is the reality of the game. Now that it doesn't look like our OL will be significantly upgraded (we won't be scoring tons of TDs) and the # of kickers available is dwindling, we NEED to get a player like Vinatieri. We have the cap toom - so why not sign one of the greatest kickers in history to play in a kicker friendly environment? His kicking would have equalled 2-3 wins for Dallas last year. We've had to take massive cap hits for players no longer on the team. Why not pay a little more than you'd like for a Pro Bowler whose talent is rare and fills an absolute, desperate need?!

$2 million per for a sawed off midget?

Judas Priest, the hate meter just spiked.

kickers arnt worth 3 million a yr...they dont make THAT much difference...

besides, if you have a good enough offense your kickers are used more for PAT's

that said, we need a solid, above average guy here to make the gimmee's...

Shoddy kicking game directly cost us 2 games last year. That puts us in the playoffs. A vet min kicker is $600K - So for a little over $1M you don't pay a reliable kicker? Man thats funny! Thats a box of rox logix!

Especially as Cap went up over $17M and we are reported over $20M under cap! Lets not use $1M of it on a kicker!

I threw up in my mouth.

You should have done that last year when our "bargain" kickers were shanking away games. Flat out losing football games.

I never said I wouldnt pay a million, but I wouldnt want to waste 3mils on a kicker...somewhere in between is probably about right

I agree 2.5 to 3 mill is way to much to be paying a kicker. It is not like they kick the ball any better for an extra mill and other teams do not seem to be wanting to pay that much either which is why these guys are on the market.
