IMHO, the Peterson sweepstakes ended for Dallas once the front office underestimated the market for top tier running backs. They believed that free agency last year set the new market for backs but what it did was set a tier system for backs. This is evidenced by the deals and guaranteed money Marshawn Lynch, Shady McCoy, and Demarco Murray received. No way Peterson should or would take less than players he is and has always been better than. Conversely, no way Dallas should fork over that money to him when they wouldn't pay their own...sends a bad message in the locker room although Peterson is a much better back.

No argument there.
I don't think Dallas was ever really in the conversation.
They were, like with Hardy, interested on some level but only if the numbers weren't insane.

If AP thinks he can get 25m guaranteed plus have Dallas hand over draft picks to acquire him it is probably wishful thinking.
AP is an older RB with league disciplinary issues.

Pursuit of Greg Hardy about price more than right-guy motto

Todd Archer

IRVING, Texas – Jason Garrett loves to talk about having the right kind of guys on the Dallas Cowboys.

Most often that has been defined as choir boys with impeccable comportment, even if it is not true. At the NFL scouting combine, Garrett was asked about the right kind of guy.

AP Photo/Patrick SemanskyGreg Hardy will visit the Cowboys, who will have to measure whether he's worth the risk.
“I think it’s critical,” he said. “And there’s so many different levels to that. There’s personal character, there’s football character, there’s work ethic, there’s passion for the game, all those things. And we literally grade the players on that. We grade our own players on that. We grade the players coming into the league on those things. You really have to dig and try to find out what this guy is all about, what makes him tick.

The teams that sign guys who are reported to be lazy but supremely talented? Or draft guys whose passion and work ethic are questioned by teammates and coaches?

Hardy is talented and productive and probably cheaper than he should be and plays a position of gargantuan need.

Do we have him in for a visit if conversations with his coaches didn't check out? The answer can't be known but i'd wager no.

And that's where RKG influence is subtle but important.

As a general rule, what teams sign lazy players, that don't practice and are all about themselves, though they may have talent? As a general rule, what team signs players that have issues, but they are willing to take a risk on them considering their talent?

Every team in the NFL pretty much avoids the first, but does the second.. it's called an RKG...

right now CB looks like a good value at 27.
who knows come draft time but with the lack of desire to pay Mo a fortune and Carr being overpaid it might be our most desired position in R1 assuming Hardy does sign.

i don't think rb is a good r1 value tbh. i mean emmitt was pick 22 and that was a great value but that's one in a million.

I have already seen several professional mocks suggesting that we go CB in round 1, though even if we do I suggest we keep Carr one more year so we don't have to rely on a rookie CB, not to mention we will be much better off if we release him after next season.

I think Florida is one of the few states without state income tax
True. That's why I included the Jaguars, Dolphins, and Buccaneers in my question. :) The other teams represent Texas, Washington and Tennessee (which has no state income tax but does tax dividends, etc.).

Just relaying what I heard on Talkin' Cowboys buddy.

I know, and it makes sense... I just have a feeling this will seriously stunt DLaws growth and he will likely be a backup to Mincey and Hardy and Cowboys fans will be up in arms.

I would be extremely shocked if they showed amazing restraint to let Murray go and then go absolutely crazy with the money to go ALL IN thereafter.

It wouldn't shock me. It would seem logical. You don't pay big money to a RB who isn't special. Murray isn't special, Peterson is. You do pay big money to an elite edge rusher still in their 20's.

Not sure what would be so shocking about a team taking this stance.

I think someone on the coaching staff likes Carr and is defending him. Not a sourced thought, just my hunch.

Probably, but Garrett loved Murray and pushed hard for him to return but they made the business decision not to overpay him. If they would not pay Murray over 6M per, I find it hard to believe that they will pay Carr 8M and his salary increases next season.

I do like the idea of maintain some roster stability from year to year because players like Carr now know the scheme. If it's a choice between Carr and a slightly more talented free agent at the same price, then I can see a benefit to keeping Carr.

Wade made a big mess in terms of the mentality of the team.

The power struggle between TO an Garrett/Romo would not have happened under Parcells/Jimmy and I don't think it would have happened under Garrett.

Players developed an attitude of entitlement under Wade. Ratliff would not have developed his entitled attitude under Parcells, IMO.

There were many others with the attitude of entitlement. Crayton, MartyB, Canty, etc..

One example of a change of attitude under Garrett was Hatcher. He had that entitled attitude under Wade and was seen on camera screaming that he should be starting. Once Garrett took over, Hatcher tried to become a leader and generally said all the right things.

Bigg and Gurode got way too fat while Wade was the HC.

In Garrett's first couple of years, he pushed for the team to over-focus on RKGs. I believe they had to over-focus on getting good characters and college team captains because of the mess left behind by Wade. Now that they have filled the roster with those types, they can afford to bring in a few questionable characters.

Garrett's hands are not clean in what took place when Phillips was the head coach.

The majority of the players you listed were offensive players, players that Garrett was directly responsible for. And, as the assistant head coach of the team, he had a responsibility to ensure that there was no sense of entitlement on the team. Yes, Phillips was weak willed, and taken advantage of, but Garrett bears responsibility as well.

I think the difference was that Wade never really had Jerry all in. I think he was a place holder, so to speak. I think Jerry is and always was all in with Garrett. Players knew that and that's the difference. At least that's my opinion from the outside looking in.

Wade wasn't given any real control over the offense, otherwise Dan Reeves would have been here to oversee a running game that Garrett clearly struggled with and took years for Jerry to actually get guys in to oversee what Wade wanted. We also would have originally been in a zone-blocking scheme through Solari, not power-blocking scheme that Garrett wanted via Houck, which we replaced with a zone-blocking scheme via Callahan. All those big, hefty lineman were here for Garrett's scheme.

Roy Williams was brought in here to help Garrett's ailing offense. And JJ sacrificed to get him. Jerry made no big moves like that at all for defense during Wade's tenure.

Wade didn't even touch Garrett's offense in practice.

I can see why i never noticed any of your 28k plus posts over the past 11 years.

The smelling thing may be a by product of being a heathen but it is no what i intended.

Here is the definition i intended:

Informal. an irreligious, uncultured, or uncivilized person.

Hope this helps...i hate that i have to spend time on a throwaway word when the Cowboys have huge goings on...

cause lord knows the crap we talk about in here drastically affect how the jones' operate the cowboys.

and don't come at me with the smelling thing choir boy - i didn't put that in the mix!!!
