Hard truth about Overshown

The question is.... has Wagner played in a 3-4 defense before? Wagner is also a HUGE liability in man coverage vs TEs and backs coming out of the backfield.

All I know is that we have made excuse after excuse after excuse of "why" we should not pick him up...and all he has done since Quinn wanted him is put up numbers and I think he made ALL-Pro.

One of the primary reasons I've always wanted him....his football IQ might be better than any other LBer we've ever had..or at least since Sean Lee/Rolondo McClain.

The LBer room has been really bad for a long time. And Sunday night showed that no matter how much money you've invested at QB, WR, RB, OL, DT...it can all be WASTED when your talent at that position is on par with a college program

Since when is this coaching staff concerned about the system the LB plays? Every one of our current LBs is playing in a system that doesn't suit them.

Demarvion Overshown was drafted in the 3rd round in 2023. A guy with great speed at LB, and a desire engine that ran high. He would have been drafted in earlier rounds that year had he not had a problematic injury history.

How bad was Overshown’s injury history? Let’s start with his 5 years at Univ of Texas:

• Between 2018 and 2022, the Longhorns played in 64 games including post season. He played in 50 of those 64 games.
• That was about 78% availability. Not great, but certainly better than his pro availability.

Since he was drafted in 2023, here is Overshown’s availability history in Dallas:

• He has played in 19 of the 52 regular season games he could have played in since his arrival in Big D.
• That is an availability rate of about 37%. Ouch.
• After his hamstring injury Sunday night in NY, he will be missing at least one game and maybe two.

Overshown is a hard working, committed young man. No one can question his heart or work ethic. He has twice worked through terrible knee injuries to return to the field. I feel bad for the young man’s luck with injuries.

But as the old saying goes, the first ability every professional athlete MUST have is availability. With an availability rate of 37%, we cannot keep holding a roster spot for a player who is constantly injured.

That may sound cold hearted but if we are committed to turning this thing around, you have to make hard decisions like this. Overshown is in a contract year. If I were the Cowboys FO, this would be his last year here.

He also signed with Parsons rep. That's going to leave a mark....on his career lol

I don't think it matters....remember....if my recollection serves me correctly....we wanted to draft him coming out of college....and had to scramble on draft day because someone stole him. ( my recollection is a little fuzzy, but I'm pretty sure we were poised to draft him and something went left)

My overall position is...we've always valued him....and he has proven to be a HOFer...but the 2 parties can never make it work.

One of the biggest problems we’ve had on defense the last few years (besides talent issues) is changing DCs like underwear. Even changing schemes, philosophies and draft purposes. This front office is like a bunch of frat guys playing fantasy football. Do we have a defensive philosophy that we stick with more than a year?

This talent pool is a hodge-podge quilt without much identity. And fixing it rests on the 34 year old shoulders of a rookie DC who way too many people were ready to fit him for a gold jacket before we broke TC.

This defense has been a misguided mess for a long time. It will take more than a new DC and a TC to fix.

It is SCARY...that the architects of this franchise uttered the words "Super Bowl" this offseason....and I think Jerry even uttered them this week AFTER what he saw Sunday night!
