ARLINGTON — Deon Anderson watched as Felix Jones dashed toward the end zone in the third quarter of the Cowboys’ 24-0 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday and couldn’t believe his eyes.
Anderson, the Cowboys fullback, looked at a scene straight out of “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” as the hyper-quick Jones followed a 6-6, 313-pound tackle into the end zone.
Doug Free, who was starting his sixth game in place of the injured Marc Columbo, had romped 49 yards down the field, had somehow gotten in front of Jones and had covered Eagles’ defensive back Sheldon Brown to the point where it was hard to see him. <----- BEAST
Brown understands how the sun feels during a total eclipse.
It was a remarkable hustle play by Free, a fourth-round pick from Northern Illinois in 2007, and one that was the buzz of the locker room after the game.
“I thought that Doug had either slimmed down or he’s been working on his 40 [yard dash] time,” Anderson said. “But that’s what you expect of Doug because he hustles every day in practice so whatever he does in practice carries over to the game. It was unexpected but expected at the same time.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was watching from his suite and he was gushing about the play after the game.
“You saw big No. 68 [Free],” Jones said. “That is really notable. To see that 68 out in front of Felix Jones down there clearing him in for a touchdown. There’s a young player that we didn’t know when we started if he was going to evolve into a player. I was concerned because we hadn’t seen him. He gets his opportunity, he steps up and is really playing well for us.
Tight end Jason Witten said the play epitomized what the Cowboys have attempted to build this season.
“That just kind of paints a picture for what this team’s about,” Witten said. “He’s a backup, doesn’t play much, comes in there and he’s on the opposite side of the field, running down and making a touchdown block for Felix.
“Those are the plays. You don’t see it on sports center, but those are the plays that you gotta make. It was an unbelievable play by Doug and that’s the way our team’s played all year.”
