I posted this question in another thread, but I was just wondering I was too young to remember him when he was playing and I see all the records he has for us I was just wondering how good was he during games and if he's so far up in our record books how come he doesnt get the same accolades as our other QBs?

He was a good quarterback but won't be listed among the greats because he could never take the team to the Super Bowl. He had critical fumbles in both the Championships we lost to the Skins and the 49ers.

He was a very versatile player (he used to be the Cowboys punter too) and showed a flair for the dramatic, bringing the Cowboys back to beat the Falcons in a playoff game. But he just couldn't get the team over the top. Maybe that's not totally his fault. But he gets the blame as quarterbacks generally do.

He was very good, he just didn't win the championships like Staubach did.

He'd have been a huge topic if we'd had these boards back then. Half the people would be constantly screaming what a disastrous waste of space he was, even though he was one of the better QBs in the game.

Scratch that -- it would have been way more than half.

he was a good, not great QB...his numbers were always pretty good and as someone else mentioned, he had that ability to bring us from behind (twice vs Falcons in playoffs, the first was 1978 after Staubach was knocked out)...also did it numerous other times, including the amazing come back win vs Washington

but late in his career his arm strength had really went away, and it seemed he had a huge problem with picks going back the other way...

he played poorly in 2 of 3 NFC Championships he played in, but many dont remember he actually outplayed Montana in the 1981 game and had his final completion went to Tony Hill instead of Drew Pearson (who was caught) he'd probably have won a championship

He actually did win a Super Bowl...

He was the starting punter for the team in Super Bowl XII and even took a few snaps at QB when Roger got dinged up at one point in the game. He also had 13 yards rushing.

:D

Danny White was between very good and great.

I just did not like him mostly because he followed Roger and I did not want to accept that......but, looking back.......he was very good

Great punter......btw

So did Troy aikman take over for him directly or was there another QB right after White

Steve Pelleur QB'd most of the games from late 1986 through the 88 season...he was kinda like Quincy (on the field, not off) except with a stronger arm...he had some talent but was very mistake prone..

Was there a lot of resentment of him taking over for the great Staubach back then

I always thought he was an overachiever that never got credit for his effort or skills. He was a competitor that would do anything to win. I will never forget him running a fake punt on his own in the early 80's and Landry yelling "No Danny, No".

He did not have a strong arm as mentioned earlier. But he was a solid player that will never probably get all the credit he deserves because he came right after Staubach and never won a SB as the QB, and played in the scab games. He negotiated his contracts without an agent, too.

In the mid-80s, his arm went away and he had to compete with Hogeboom and later Pueller, IIRC, for a couple of years. By the late 80s, the whole team sucked and he faded away.

OT but what really angers me about that game is everyone showing "The Catch" and Everson Walls getting beat, but no one mentions the 2 ints and Forced Fumble (did he also have a fumble recovery?) he had in that game. If not for Walls there wouldn't of been "The Catch" cuz they would of just been running out the clock on us in the 4th quarter.

And what I remember about White:

In 1986 we were 5-1 (I think) till he got hurt (I think it was either LT or Carl Banks that broke his wrist). Out for the season, we ended up winning 7 games.

Up until this year Danny White led the most prolific offense in the history of the Dallas Cowboys. Had some bad luck but never received the credit he should of. The broken wrist vs LT and the Giants was a career ender.

I think Danny White was a great QB but was also on a team where the talent level started to fade and took a lot of the blame that was not his fault.

I have to agree with the sentiment of most of this thread. White was a good solid QB who played well for most of his time with Dallas. He was a solid backup for Staubach. When he took over as the starter, White had great stats (a few too many ints in 1980 though), was durable, led some great comebacks in regular season and playoffs, and won a lot of games in his first 4 years as the regular QB. From 1984 on, it was hit or miss with White. He was injured often in the last few seasons.

I had a #11 jersey.

Danny still holds some single-season records for the Cowboys for passing yards (3,980 in 1983) and TDs (29 in 1983).

I think/hope Romo will break those as early as this year, but they've stood for quite a while.
