Danny White was, is, and always will be my favorite Cowboy. I was 13 when Danny became Dallas' starting QB. The only thing Danny did wrong was replacing Staubach. Those that say Romo has more up-side than White had do not remember/know just how solid a player Danny was. Anyone remember the 1978 Divisional play-off game against Atlanta? Roger went out with a concussion at half-time. Danny lead Dallas from behind, throwing the winning TD to Jackie Smith (It is sad Jackie dropped a more important pass a couple of weeks later:banghead:) Two years later, Danny nailed Atlanta again with a come-from-behind-win. Roger stated that one thing that made him feel better about retiring after the '79 season was Danny's readiness to play. He even predicted that Dallas would be better in 1980 than they were in '79, which proved to be true.
I heard it said once that Steve Young was a gold-plated Danny White. I think if Danny could have done what Young did, win one SB as the QB, he would be thought of the same way as Don, Roger, and Troy.

Of the three NFC Championship games Danny lead Dallas to, the only one I did not believe we would win was the first one in Philly. The day was brutally cold and windy. The Cowboys looked drained from the emotional win against Atlanta the week before. Danny and the offense looked terrible, but the defense held them in the game till after the half (the score was 7-0 Philly) The second half belonged to the Eagles thanks to RB Wilburt Montgomery. I could see from the start it just wasn't going to be Dallas' day.

The 49er Championship game hurt me more than any other loss, including the ones in the Super Bowl. I cannot describe the frustration I felt watching Montana drive the Niners down the field on that final drive. If Dallas had won that game, I know in my heart that Dallas would have beaten Cincy in SB XVI for their 3rd title. Danny out played Montana that day without question.

Danny received a concussion in the first half of the '82 Championship game against the Commanders which allowed Hogeboom to play and started that stupid QB controversy (Skip Bayless was Hogey's biggest fan)
People think of Danny as an average QB who "couldn't win the big game," which is such an injustice to him. I am not saying he was as good as Roger, but he was an exceptional QB.
I have one question. We all know that QB's are judged by the number of Suber Bowl rings they wear not by their stats (see Fran Tarkenton). Roger and Troy have theirs, I hope and pray Tony will get his (maybe this year) That said, why does Meredith rate more respect from Cowboy fans than White? I mean no disrespect to Don, but I do not see what he did for Dallas that was greater than what Danny accomplished. Neither won a title, but Meredith is in the ROH while White isn't. Now I know Jerry has final say as to who gets in, but I feel Danny deserves to be there, just like Drew, Harvey, and others do. Just my opinion.:starspin

Wow. What a great thread. I never got to watch him play since I was too young to really remember anything before around 1989. Some really good stuff in here that makes me really wish I was a bit older so I could have witnessed some of the history that makes this franchise what it is.

I think it was maybe even 6-1 or 6-2 and White had won Division in 1985? That was the Hogeboom debacle era. Once White went down we went on a 3-4 year bender.

The yr White got hurt was 1986, and Hogeboom was not on that team...Pelleur came in at QB

And he played and played well during a time when expectations weren't as high for the Dallas Cowboys. Meredith didn't win any Super Bowls, though he did lead the Cowboys to the NFC Championship game.

Once Dallas started winning Super Bowls, the standard changed. I mean, look at Romo. He can start and win passing titles galore, but if he doesn't get to a Super Bowl and win it, he will never been considered the quarterback Aikman and Staubach are, even if his numbers drawf them when his career ends.

In Dallas, success is all about da rings.

like it has been said before here...Danny White was a dang good quarterback.
his recognition or lack thereof comes from all the reasons mentioned
previously but that does not change the fact that he was a great QB
for our Boys.
heres my rankings ( not based solely on Super Bowls or even Talent)
1. Dandy Don Meredith...he was the QB when i first started watching
2. Roger Staubach....Cuz he finally got us that Super Bowl
3. Danny White....never felt he got the credit he deserved.
4. Troy Aikman....yeah yeah I know, 3 Super Bowls..just a personal opinion
5. Craig Morton...lotta talent but never measured up
6. Eddie LeBaron...was playing when I first started watching, always liked that he was called "the little general" due to his short stature
7. All the rest of the guys who ever played get lumped in here because
they just didnt stand out. ( clint longley, hogeboom....ended up on Survivor, pelluer, kevin sweeney...strike player, steve walsh...who i mistakenly thought would beat out Aikman, quincy, chutch, henson....boy was i wrong on him, testaverde, bledsoe, leaf.
8. anybody i forgot about pretty much puts them at the bottom of my list

And what I remember about White:

In 1986 we were 5-1 (I think) till he got hurt (I think it was either LT or Carl Banks that broke his wrist). Out for the season, we ended up winning 7 games.

Thats what I remember too. He was great those first few games, but just never was able to recover really from that break.

And the almost Prequal to, "The Slant" was to Pearson in that '81 game...could have easily gone the distance, a la Aikman to Harper.

One of my favorite cowboys nevertheless.
