How great was Romo?

The offensive line wasn't great, but I don't think it was nearly as bad as it's being hyped in which Romo had to "carry the team". Kitna came in in 2010 and went 4-5. Did he carry the team?
 
Meh. Big players make big plays in big games. Unfortunately Tony made plenty of big plays in big games but forgot which team he was playing for.
 
After Brady, Manning, Rodgers, and Brees comes Romo. Aside from the four I listed in front of him, I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have in their prime than Romo. IMO I’d rather have Romo than McNabb, Eli, and Rivers.

Romo was never the issue with this team while he was here. Most seasons he had no running game and no defense to lean on. People always bring up the 2007 team. If you want to blame someone for that loss in the play-offs you need to look at Patrick Crayton. He was the reason we lost that game. And don't even try to blame Romo for the loss against the Vikings. Dude was running for his life from the moment the ball was snapped. The O-line took that game off.

I have no doubt with our current team Romo would be at worst 2-1 right now. The guy had reached a point in his career where he knew what the defense was going to do before they did. The media would be buzzing about how the Cowboys found talent with a bunch of WR's no one thought could do anything. You think Dez's suddenly regressed so much as soon as Romo stopped playing? No, it's because Romo made him better than he really was. Same thing with Laurent Robinson, same thing with Patrick Crayton, same thing with all the other WR's who came through Dallas, looked good, went somewhere else and did absolutely nothing. A good QB elevates those around him. Dak is doing the opposite right now. You can see the frustration growing on the team. People blame the O-line but Dak has one of the longest times to throw of all the NFL teams. People blame the run game yet we lead the league in yards per carry. People blame the WR's yet our WR's are creating more separation than some of the top receivers in the league. The problem right now is the QB. We need to do something to fix it and fix it fast. The off-season is getting longer and longer every year. I don't want to wait all that time to see the poop we are trotting out onto the field every week.

He was plenty mobile. And he made the offense better.

Romo was good , very good at times .. he had a knack of lifting you up ... bringing you to the edge of giddyness to just about have your heart ripped out at the end some of the time ... he would pass for hundreds of yards and you always felt like you had a chance .. however that chance went both ways .. chance to win and chance to a crushing defeat .. I’ve sat there many a time on the edge of my seat .. waiting for the other shoe to drop .. I love Romo but he still was part of some teams that failed to deliver at the end .. many almost years ..

Romo changed the plays, continued to put dez in position to succeed, made other receivers get paid, Romo did a lot more than people realize. With Ezekiel and this offense line, he would destroy, defenses wouldn’t try there luck nearly as much with him as our qb
 
I think Romo was a HOF caliber QB. The defense during the Romo era was usually suspect at best, but for as long as we had Romo, I always felt like we could win against any opponent. Romo also suffered through some of the worst OL play in NFL history, and unlike Dak, Romo could make scrub WR's look like serviceable NFL players. I hate to hear people dog Romo for his lack of playoff success, it's not like anybody thought those were Super Bowl teams with a better QB. Romo was subjected to the same circus of a front office, and also the same unimaginative offenses, yet Romo being pretty damn good when healthy was the one consistent thing we could hang our hats on. Jerry squandered a HOF QB, and he knows it!

Pretty much agree with this. Maybe in that 5-7 range if you want to be picky, but Romo can go toe-to-toe and compete with anyone in this league. The fact that Dallas got nowhere during his prime tells me more about this organization that him. I doubt any of those top 4 QBs would have gotten anywhere here too.

It was. Garret botched the 2010 rebuild by his own admission and after that Jerry started drafting OL in round 1 for the first time in his tenure as cowboys owner. We had T-Rex Costa at center for a year for gods sake.

2010 - Total 9th, Pass 17th, Run 5th
2011 - Total 15th, Pass 16th, Run 15th
2012 - Total 22nd, Pass 26th Run 8th
2013 - Total 4th, Pass 9th. Run 2nd

It wasn't nearly as bad as claimed. Romo running for his life is party due to him wanting to extend plays. It's an over-exaggeration that has been built up over the years. Just like claiming Romo had no running game. We could run the ball. We chose not to. We even converted a high percentage of 3rd/4th and short on the ground when we ran.

We watched different games then. Why does Aikman have twice as many rushing yards if he's not mobile?
