I went to two different High Schools. Starting LT/DE 2 years at one school and starting LT/DT 2 years at another school. Couldn’t stay out of trouble. Played at a JC for one year starting LT. Dropped out of school to do hood rat stuff with my friends.

Scored 6 TD’s in one game.

Polk HS. Look it up.
I'm sure your wife Peggy gets tired of you telling those stories. But how come you never pushed your son, Bud, to play? Oh...and since we're talking about your family, congrats on having a hot daughter?

PS -Sorry to hear you became a shoe salesman.

I played from 5th-12th grade mostly fullback and linebacker/safety in the early days, but had a bit of a growth spurt my sophomore year of High School and moved to offensive/defensive line.

I was always a fine player, but for some reason things really clicked my senior year and I was selected all-state, all-conference, and then finally to the All-Colorado Team as a center. Had a few opportunities to play at very very small schools, but decided my future was not football. I knew in college I would more than likely ride the bench for 4 seasons due to the fact I was small even for a DIII college lineman and had very average athletic ability, so I decided to call it quits and focus what would make me a living.

I helped out my offensive line coach at my high school for a few seasons until he retired and found that coaching is pretty fun. Would love to do it again if the opportunity presented itself.

It's fun to see everyone's playing experience. I didn't realize we even had a few guys on the site that spent a moment in the NFL. Cool stuff.

I played my freshman year of HS and then hurt my knee working out the summer before my sophomore year. That was it for me. I really regret not being able to play in HS but back then sports medicine was not a thing and neither was rehabbing knees. I was concerned I would not be able to play baseball which was more my thing.

Glad to know we weren't the only ones to have an FIL
I played more football without pads than I did with pads.
Played in a rough touch league up into my 40s till I broke my elbow.
Still played tackle football with no pads on Thanksgiving with the kids up until last year.

Our FIL in Orlando met every Sunday at a local high school. I have great memories from those days. I found out why they always made us stretch before games during that time. I used to stretch religiously back then but one day I showed up late and the guys insisted I jump right in and play because one team was down a man. I had been training for my tryout with the USFL team so I was in great shape and thought nothing of it. About the second play in the QB, who clearly aint know who I was, decides to test me deep. He overthrows his man by a good 5 yards but as I was in great shape and blazing fast I decided I could go get that ball. As soon as I hit the accelerator I felt my hamstring pop.. and down I went.. It was a year before I could sprint again..

The worst part was having to drive my car home which was a 5 speed manual.. with a torn hamstring on my clutch leg. Every shift felt like I was being shot in the leg. Well that wasn't the worst part.. The worst part was having to listen to the wife give my about a thousand "I told you so's" about playing tackle football without pads. I was only 26 then so I didn't listen.. and started playing again as soon as the leg healed.

2x All American Track & Cross Country in college

State & national class distance runner HS & college

Never played FB but in HS and College the QB’s would throw to me as I stopped by after their practices so have a feel for the velocity of their throws.

Also got to run with many of the WRs or others who wanted to better condition themselves in the off-season

Have great respect for the physical challenges of the pounding they take regardless of position

I don't think people truly understand the meaning of this. I played and coached football most of my life from about age 8 to about age 50. I've played catch with a hundred different QBs at different levels. My high school QB was Tim Groves who went on to play 4 years at Florida. He was the first QB I ever played with whose passes hurt to catch. You could hear the ball whistling in the air as it approached. Dude had a cannon.

Fast forward about 15 years I had moved to California and would run sprints on the track of San Jose City College.. which any track aficionado will know as the place where Bruce Jenner got his start as did current analyst and ATL Olympic bronze medalist in the 100m and 200m Ato Bolden. I have pictures of Bruce with his little ones climbing all over him from the time I met him at the track meet he used to host there. He asked if I wanted a better picture I laughed and told them there could be no better picture than that one.

Anyway.. one day I was working out and this gigantic kid and two smaller 20 somethings come out to the track and start putting cleats on and throwing the ball around. Eventually the smaller guys transition into running routs and catching passes from the bigger one. It looked like fun and I always carried my cleats and my gloves in my gym bag so I asked to join in. I ran a few routes but it immediately struck me that this kid ALSO made the ball whistle when he threw it and it hurt to catch even with gloves on.

It was my lunch break and I had to get back to work but as I was leaving I asked what the kid was training for and who he was. He answered "Scott Mitchell, I'm getting ready for the draft..." I didn't know who he was at that point.. but I remembered when I saw him playing on Sundays.

I played throughout high school and my freshman year at Texas A&M.

Two things happened after my freshman year: a non-football knee injury that would wipe out my sophomore year and recognition that when they have to time you with a sun dial in the 40, you probably won't garner much playing time.

So, I shifted my focus to engineering and intramural softball...less wear and tear on the knee. As much as I love football, this was an easy and smart change.
