But if you do that it still takes up 60 Million in cap space over the next three years. Doing the extension gives you more flexibility and you can build in incentives and out clauses.

If you let Dak play out his rookie deal and tag him you can move on to another QB with no cap ramifications. Not sure what FA QBs or draft prospects are coming available in the next 2 years but Dak has looked pretty bad at times. If there is an opportunity to bring in a QB with a real NFL arm and real pocket presence it is probably worth it. Hard to do if you have 10s of millions of dollars wrapped up in Dak.

He might but doesn't mean it has to be from us. The real problem here is that agents make there money up front so they are not interested in setting up deals where payment is contingent on a prove it type deal, unless said player is at a stage in their careers where they aren't betting a better offer. We don't know what Dak will get offered and that may not have anything to do with what he is actually worth.
The Cowboys are as transparent as it gets in sports. History tells us that what the team is basically telling us is what’s eventually gonna happen. Jerry is sold on Dak. Me personally I see coaching changes coming. As they thought about firing Linehan. Them not doing it makes sense because basically who would take over? Moore? Colombo? Or I think Alexander was still ol coach. I think if wade wilson would’ve still been an coach linehan probably is t in Dallas right now.

I think Dak is gonna get locked up long term with a contract that allows them to walk away if it doesn’t work out , but allows them to restructure. NE has done this with Brady for probably almost a decade

I was thinking more along the lines of----

"Here's what a good backup is paid in today's NFL. That's what we're offering you because we are about to sign Nick Foles and you'll be carrying his clipboard next year. If that doesn't suit you, there's the door. Dak, please make sure it doesn't hit you in the arse on your way out. We wouldn't want your head to get jammed any further up there than it already is. Thanks."
Dak should be paid more than romo since he’s outperformed him since he got here.

Coach garret went with Dak as a rookie because he believed he was better than romo

Funny. I don't remember me, or anyone else other than you, mentioning Romo in this thread.

When you cannot defend your pet without putting down others, your pet is probably peeing and pooping on the rug a little too much. You need to get rid of that pet and get a better one.

If they draft a qb and don’t make the playoffs like Dak has done the majority of his career jerry Jones will be seen as a national embarrassment.

He’s not going to do that

  • Tell them to sign the 4 year extension worth 80 million/42 million guaranteed because that is a more than fair offer or leave town in 2020 and gamble in free agency. They will be lucky to get 3 or 4 million more per season. On the flipside, they may only be offered deals in the 15 million range or even less with very little in endorsement opportunities.

  • .
Why would you ever pay a player significantly more than the player would get, even if they totally lucked out in free agency? Nuts.

My answer to Daks agent would be "your client is under contract for 2019....."

I’m sure Garrett and Jerry will corner Dak in a small office With tons of cowboys memorabilia. And then bust out the contract and the pen let’s see how Dak handles pressure then...

Actually he took over for romo because of injury
He kept playing because he was winning and looked like the future
The problem is he looked like the future then, now not so much

I think Cowboys will offer him a fair deal with Escalator clauses that will allow him to make more if goals set forth are reached.

I understand its unlikely. It does not need to be a 1st round pick or a draft pick at all. Dak was a late 4th.

If in next years draft we are picking in the 2nd round and there is a Jimmy G, Teddy Bridgewater, or Derek Carr caliber QB prospect, we need to think about pulling the trigger.

Let him play next year then apply the Transition Tag on him. That still exists, right? Let the market dictate the contract. Are the Giants, Steelers, Saints, or some other team that probably needs a new QB in 2020 going to give him a monster deal? If they do, then Dallas can decide whether or not to match. If nobody is willing to pay him something other than bus driver money, then just match the deal and you have him at "market rate."

In the OP Dak is guaranteed 42 Million, which is spread out over 3 years. If he isn't playing well, you cut him. If he does play well, its well below market rate.

If you tag him for two years you pay him 60 Million over those 3 years and if he does play well, you have set his salary at 30 Million a year going forward.

It makes sense for both sides to do an extension like the OP said, but for the team to build in incentives and outclauses.

FO:
  • He has the best rusher in the league with Zeke
  • He has a decent Oline
  • Half of those 50 sacks are due to him holding onto the ball for too long because he doesn't anticipate receivers getting open
  • He needs a #1 receiver in order to be successful so his pay should be lowered so that a #1 receiver could be afforded
  • Don't be greedy and take the life changing money.
The funny thing is either contract is life changing money.

Totally agree, I thought Romo would be given the starting spot when he was healthy but they decided to roll with the hot hand. Romo's health is obviously the wild card and at this point he would be 38 and Dak would very likely be the starter anyway.

1/2 of those sacks are Not his fault, the scheme is garbage and the o-line is in shambles, but thanks for playing...
