How would you handle the Barber situation?

If Barber is going to be splitting carries with other backs I can't justify an investment of more than $5 mil a year. He just isn't going to get 250 carries in this offense with Felix Jones and Choice on board.

I knew this wold happen, it happens ever year. Around draft time people always want the see is the backups start over the pro bowlers. Naw, we need to lock "Barber up in a long term deal, he is a beast and one of the toughest runners in the game, if not the toughest.

If not for the cap, everyone would want him back. It's just that we can't keep everybody, unfortunately.

I understand the point, but Barber is nothing like those guys in terms of how many carries he gets. He had 138 carries in his rookie year, 135 the next year, and 204 this past year. The most carries he'll probably get next year is like 250. The guys you mentioned were carrying it 350+ times a year, which takes a much larger toll on a back. I see no reason Barber couldn't have a relatively long career as long as he's getting 250 or fewer carries a season.

But if he's only carrying the rock so few times a year, why pay him $10M/yr to do it?

I've got no major problem with $10M guarantee and $25-30M over 5-6 years for a guy who is going to split carries, run hard and provide leadership. The $40-60M figure suggests he greatly overestimates his worth. Every dollar he takes is money out of someone else's pocket. Football is a team game and he is being very selfish with these alleged demands.

Let him shop around then match any offers that are within reason, pure business..

I think that's fair enough next year. Just let him play out his tender and let the market establish his worth and we can decide from there how we want to proceed. It's not like Barber is the Barry Sanders or Emmitt Smith where you would never want to let him see the light of FA.

If he leaves, we'll probably get a 3rd round compensation pick for him.

If he was truly worth $40-60mil some other team would have met the tender offer.

No team is that dumb to give him that type of money and give up the picks. Mly guess is we'll either get him for around the $30M we have offered or he will walk next year.

Thats true but at the time he had not made the $40-60mil demand. Would you give that type of money and the picks for Emmitt in his prime but in today's market?

Barber is clearly not in Emmitt's league. Players just rarely get offered deals when they are franchised or given the top tender (1st and 3rd).

There may be some team out there willing to pay Barber because it'll make a big splash as he's very popular with fans around the league for his running style.

This is exactly my point. I don't think Barber knows this yet.

I think JFE made a good point about a week ago regarding this. She said MB has confused being popular with being great. She really hit the bullseye on that one.

I think he knows this. He's just letting his agent handle the negotiations. We haven't heard any direct quotes from Barber about being worth LT money. That was Drew Rosenhaus talking. Next question.

I missed that article but that point is spot on.

Interesting gamble that may have backfired. Would they have taken Choice if Barber had made a reasonable demand? Letting him carry the load by himself and getting 25-30 carries in a game to see what he has in him may just bring him back to earth.

I say keep the offer we already gave ..... if he wants to make big big money and go to a losing team in a year ...... well

Choice and Jones sounds pretty good to me. I think Choice has the talent to be a star in this league paired with a guy like Felix.

Mr. Jones will sign Barber.....he is not going anywhere because he is a great worker with rock solid character.

So does that mean we should pay him whatever he wants? There are 53 spots on the football roster and as of right now there is a salary cap. Barber has to buy into the team concept - this is what has made NE successful for so long - they buy into the team.

"Pay that man his money."

He's earned a 30 - 36 mil contract, pay the dude. 40-60 though? No way.

You're right. The rule is against grabbing and hanging on to a players facemask. I think it also says no more blows to the face, so you can stiff arm but you can't punch.
pre-frikken-cisely

He has turned down $30 mil right?

Franchise him and see what happens.

Someone will pay him ALOT to be a starter and that will be the end of him. At this point he wants to secure a BIG Signing Bonus.

I dont think we can deal with him.

This is funny, you guys need to stop watching youtube videos of these prospects. And i say Prospect because thats what they are. Chocie hasnt gain a first down, hasnt even been through his first training camp and you are ready to let Barber( A guy who eveyrone loved fr the last couple of seasons) go. Thats just terrible. How about we wait to see how things turnout with barbers contract situation first.

Like i said, we need to have him signed before the seasons starts, or at least early in the season. Because if he is on his way to another pro bowl year chances are he wont resign. Remember, we a lot of teams would pay top dollars for Barber. The best thing to do is to get a deal done because we don't know how things will work out with these other two, Barbers proven.

You all, should be ashamed of your selves for turning on Barber so quickly. Terrible, Choice and Jones. To PROSPECTS, who haven't even played a down. And there have been better prospect than these two who turn out to be complete bust.
