I don't think that we know yet with Lance. The interceptions hadn’t been a problem for him until this game, and frankly it looks to me like the coaches just told Trey to go ahead and let it fly this time. He had been overly cautious about throwing picks in the first two PS games and his sudden willingness to try difficult throws makes me think the coaches wanted to see those throws. I don’t know if the coaches did say that… but I know that coaches will say that at times in games that don’t count. Heck, Parcells told Phil Simms that in a regular season game and said that if he threw an INT that it would be on the coaches and not on him.
What do I think of Lance? I’m not really sure. The physical tools are very good but playing QB in the NFL is just so much about processing and decision making. Obviously, if you could get his processing speed up to where it needs to be, you’d have a great QB that can extend drives with his legs. However, the interceptions show that he still needs work on reading defenses and making decisions. They haven’t been a problem for him up to this point, but man… you can’t just throw to the other team like that.
He showed against the Chargers exactly why you’d love to have him as your QB. Unfortunately, he also showed exactly why you wouldn’t want him as your QB. What does that mean? I guess just that he has potential but isn’t there yet.
This backup QB is polarizing and it is split down the Dak Prescott divide. For the most part, people who don’t like Dak think that Lance looks great and those that like Dak as the Cowboys QB think that Trey has shown that he can’t be an NFL QB. I guess that’s understandable, but it is a shame because Lance isn’t great and he definitely hasn’t shown that he can’t play in this league, IMO.
I’m sort of in the middle on Lance. I think he still needs some work. He’s only had 1 training camp in McCarthy’s west coast offense, and 1 regular season where he was the 3rd QB just watching the offense. He certainly needs more work in it. But the progress he showed from the first preseason game to the third preseason game was noticeable, and shows the direction he will go as he continues to get comfortable in the offense. The coaches seem to feel the same way and want to continue to mold Trey. McCarthy always says, he needs reps, he needs reps. Which I agree with.
On Dak, I’m kind of in the middle as well. He’s a good QB and makes plenty of plays. I do see that his playoff record needs improving, but overall, the team wins with Prescott. The only thing that gives me pause with Dak is the kind of money he’s about to make. I can understand why a team would want to keep him… but I can also understand why a team would want to move in from him rather than pay that much money. I do think Dallas keeps Dak, but I could be wrong.
But this is about Lance. I agree with the team that he should be kept and developed because I think there’s a pretty good shot that he ends up as a good player in the league. He has so much upside that it makes perfect sense to keep working with him.
What about Trey’s next contract? Well, that’s another story entirely, and it is one the Cowboys will need to figure out if they want to truly see what Lance can become. I have no idea about what kind of contract he’ll want, but money aside, I want to see Lance stay in Dallas long enough to show if he can make it or not.
