What if he wants $20 million per year for 4 years when his contract expires? $50 million guaranteed? You still want him?
Dallas will offer him a competition contract.

he won’t leave. Lance knows he has a shot at QB1 in Dallas.

probably 3-4 years, $25-30 mill total, $10 mill signing bonus.

$7 mil cap hit per year.

very affordable.

especially when compared to the mega millions that Dak requires.

I agree. If Trey Lance actually somehow has a realistic chance at becoming this great to elite QB, who is suddenly able to live up to his draft status. And shows he is capable of leading the Cowboys past the 2nd round and more importantly leading the Cowboys to a Super Bowl win. Then I don't see how him and his agent settles less than 40-50 million total. The Dallas brand name isn't going to be enough for Lance to decide to settle for way less than what the QB market is. Especially if Lance is convinced that he can be the first QB in 30 years to win the Cowboys a Super Bowl.

Then he'll be asking for the market value or close to it. And it still will be a hefty contract even while being cheaper than Dak's.

If Dak does not sign a new contract soon, and sure looks like he will not.
Anything short of a SB, depending how Dak plays in the playoffs, if they get there. Jerry needs to let Dak go to FA, and roll the dice with Trey.
Even if a 1 year contract extension. Heck, franchise tag him if need be.

Sounds about right, his next deal will be a short-term, probably 3-year deal.

So you see people...THIS is why I have reservations about public forum. This person seems to think trey must "become this great to elite". And he must "show he is capable of leading cowboys past 2nd round (and beyond!).

So...let's set the bar HIGH! Let's PROVE Trey is ELITE...even BEFORE he gets a chance to play? Live up to his "draft status"...3 first rounds...how do you do that?

The contract is due soon, but trey has to prove himself with a 2nd round playoff wins and maybe even super bowl.

THEN he can set the market.

Wow...man...well okay then.

Everyone keeps saying that Lance needs reps, but this was his 4th NFL training camp and he’s had enough reps to look better than he has. He’s had four career NFL starts and he played almost the entire preseason this summer. His accuracy is a real issue and don’t anyone give me this crap that Dak had accuracy issues like we’re seeing with Lance. It’s been one high ball after another with misses on short routine throws.

Dak had accuracy issues also when he first became the starter. Lance is a good athlete and could become something good if given the chance. Hopefully he gets the chance and Dak hits the streets.

Teams don't draft QBs that high unless they are expecting them to be great to elite. Or have abilities, skills and talent levels in which other QBs in the NFL aren't capable of reaching. And some fans still believe that Trey Lance has the potential to live up to the overall number 3 draft pick. While others think he is an upgrade over Dak or will be able to accomplish feats this team has been unable to accomplish at the QB position over the last 30 years. These will be points Trey Lance's agent will most likely bring up in any contract negotiations with the Cowboys front office.

Some Cowboys fans want the team to start Trey Lance and I'm being realistic in saying that Lance will not settle for a true discount, if his agent can sell the Cowboys front office on the same things that some Cowboys fans believe, which is that Lance has the ability to play on the great to elite level we see other QBs who are drafted that high play on. And if he can do enough to convince the Cowboys front office that he can truly be a franchise, Super Bowl winning capable QB. Why would Lance take a discount or less than the market value. When he sees what other QBs are getting paid?

If Trey Lance can't show he has the ability to get the Cowboys passed the 2nd round and eventually win the Super Bowl. Then what is the point of the Cowboys paying him and keeping him around? Isn't the goal to move onto a QB who can lead us passed the 2nd round and get us to a Super Bowl?

If.....how about if he can become the 2nd string QB first. Maybe he can win a backup job somewhere in the NFL next year.

However, GM's want an experienced back up QB, who can come in and win some games if their starter goes down.

Yeah I was addressing those who think Lance is going to be QB1 and therefore will take a huge discount just to start for Dallas. Which I don't see happening if his whole selling point is going to be convincing some fans and Jerry Jones that he can play on the level QBs who are drafted that high are suppose to play on. With how we seen how much other QBs (even ones that don't have much postseason success get paid.) I don't see Lance just settling for less than what they are getting paid as the franchise QBs for their teams for the foreseeable future. And Jerry brands Lance as the Cowboys franchise QB for the foreseeable future.

The only way he might take a discount is if the front office makes it clear he is more of a transitional QB and that they are planning to draft another QB in the near future. Therefore the hypothetical scenario of Lance being QB1 for the Cowboys, is Lance's opportunity to audition to be a long termed starter on another team.

Okay...so how do the cowboys address an EMINENT contract....when Trey has to "prove" he can get to the second round and Super Bowl.

Your scenario is totally

Why else would the Cowboys pay him unless it's the belief that he can lead the team past the 2nd round at least? Herbert hasn't even won a playoff game yet. But got paid a huge contract just because the Chargers believe they have a top 5 to elite level QB in him. And thinks he can eventually lead them to deep playoff runs and a Super Bowl. This is the basis of all QBs getting paid market value. And I asked why would Trey Lance take less than market value. When it's time for his contract negotiations to come up and he is told that he is expected to be the Cowboys starting QB for some years to come. The whole point of QBs getting paid is on the belief that they can turn their teams into strong playoff and Super Bowl contenders.

Of the three Lance has the best chance of being QB1 next season, or being on the roster period, for that matter.
Most likely. A few reasons: 1) the team is not going to break the bank for Dak nor have another NTC in a possible extension 2) Dak’s possible extension will be highly dependent upon how far the team goes in the playoffs assuming the team reaches there and Dak finishes the regular season as starting QB 3) Lance asked for a trade from the 49ers when he was made 3rd string and no longer had a shot to be the #1 QB because of their decision to go with Purdy. He has not done that here so this is an indication that the team does see him as a future long term possibility for it as long as he continues to positively develop.
