CFZ I am flummoxed as to what to think about our draft

How is that a need pick? He is a pass catching blocking machine and will not only improve the running game but upgrade the pass protection.
I doubt he was BPA there.

It was pretty obvious they wanted a TE leading up to the draft and probably would have taken Kincaid.

Nice assessment.

Scott is a tall CB who can't cover. I do not understand our obsession w/ him at all.

Fehoko was a reach, but I really don't know who was available there, so I guess we'll see.
6th round selection, 212th overall - not an "obsession" imo.
Next-to-the-last-round pick that probably DC Quinn lobbied the draft room to get.

It’s interesting the emotions the draft brings out in fans, when it can be years to determine how good or bad a draft really is, and by that point most are only focused on that year’s draft.

Because we didn't need a TE, and he wasn't even close to BPA. Only way it makes sense is if he is really really good.
In your opinion he wasn't BPA, but it doesn't matter what you think. What did the scouts think? Who was the decision maker on the pick? I think that while these are important question I doubt we will ever really get an answer so I think it is best just to wait and see, we can criticize the pick when he fails. When he shows that he is not as good as the "Dallas scouts" thought, but until then it is all speculation based on your own bias. Patience is a virtue.

Good draft? Bad draft? Mediocre draft? I have no idea.

The confusion came right from the start when we took a DT. We haven't invested a big asset in the DT position in years. I like the pick. He can stop the run and has enough athleticism that with some coaching and refinement he might developed into a decent pass rusher from the inside.

They talked about the run game in the offseason so I figured OL and TB would be prime targets. Nope. The 2nd round pick was a pure need pick. Don't try to convince me otherwise. When LaPorta and Mayer went off the board at the top of the 2nd, I think they worried no TE would get to them in the 3rd so they grabbed Schoonmaker. Who does little for me. Not impressed, nor do I think it's a terrible pick. Odds are it's another questionable 2nd rounder from this franchise that really has some bad 2nd round picks.

Overshown is an athletic freak. And he makes plays. I have no issues with the pick. Will be interesting to see Quinn use him and Parsons together.

Fehoko? Decent player, not sure we needed him. DE is one place we have bodies. Maybe they envision him as a Tyrone Crawford type that they can use as a 3T?

The trade up for a big, tall but slow DB was peculiar. But Quinn has his mold for DBs and this kid seems to fit. Whatever. Doubt he's anything more than a special teams guy.

I like the kid from UNC and when you read his scouting report, he really seems like a guy that could end up at OG.

The TB? Great story. But he's likely a situational guy, which is fine, especially at that spot in the draft. I think Evans was still on the board, right? I would have taken him. I am not impressed with a top 3 TB depth chart of Pollard, Jones, Davis and this kid sprinkled in.
EVERY year they have one or two big gaffs or holes that ruin our shot at doing something special.

Word is Fehoko is eventually going to be a 3T

Isnt going to take years to figure out we dont have a viable starting guard this year. Doesnt take years to analyze that Tyron Smith is going to get injured sooner than later and cant be relied on.

For me it was a status quo, stay relevant draft. There were no aggressive moves made to get high-level talent in need areas.

This draft, to me, is a microcosm of the Cowboys roster and franchise plans in general. Just be good enough to stay relevant, but don’t, by any means, take risks that could harm future relevancy.

You’re usually a positive guy, I’m guessing you not happy with the direction this draft went?

Im positive if there are things to be positive about.

Not happy about what they didnt do with the Oline and RB. Although I do like Deuce.

I am a big Oline guy and I am baffled that they are content going into THIS season with a worse Oline than the one they had last year. Which wasnt close to good enough.

Sydla - after reviewing the past four days of comments here at Cowboys Zone - the 'Flummoxed' contingent is around 10%, which equals the 'wait and see' group...10% also.
The other 80 percent ----split this way...
- Cowboys FO did good-decent-alright = 35%
- Cowboys FO mucked it up = 45%

agree everything starts in the trenches but picking in the back end of the round makes it difficult to balance need and bpa

Nice summary and pretty much agree.

Mazi can be a difference maker, especially once he learns to rush the QB.
Schoonmaker is meh, but can turn out to be a pretty good pick. I won't complain, just hope he is worth it.
Overshown, he can fit in very well and contribute, if used right, as he has some surrounding talent, and will not be asked to do too much too soon.
He can do what they ask of Kearse but possible better, and allow Kearse to be more of a true SS.

Agree, and I posted that several times, they did not need to go DE with Fehoko. I know it is more of a future pick. But that means another player that plays now is off the roster.
Unless they already decided who may be gone. I like the potential, but was he necessary at that point.

I don't know much about the OL, but I think they could addressed the OL sooner. I hope he pans out as depth is needed, then can become a future starter.
I did not like the trade for the CB Scott. Time will tell on this as all the other day 3 picks.
Vaughn looks like he can contribute something right away though.
Brooks at WR, as good as any other player I guess at that point.
Mazi is growing on me the more I read up on him. I still wish we had of gone for the other Smith.

True but they had FA and they also had Torrence the #1 rated guard in the draft available in the 2nd round and others. Now maybe they didnt like the player or maybe they think they are fine.

We know they arent fine in the Oline as last year they werent fine and this year the line is worse.

I think it's a good draft, it's just not a draft with a lot of high floor/low ceiling types. I'm seeing a lot of guys who can come in and contribute right away, but may never be stars in this league. I always say find me two starters and another guy who can contribute somehow and it's a good draft. I think the did that depending on your definition of a starter. Outside of injury Smtih, Shoonmaker, Overshown, and Vaughn I easily see them all getting week 1 snaps....but all on a situational/rotational basis.

This is easily a draft where we look back 3 years from now and say that your top 3 picks are good players, but look at what could have been had we drafted X,Y, and Z.

I look at this draft as a solid B. Not a single player I don't like, but the value of your top two selections is genuinely low.

Yet, I am sure if I went back I would find you pimping Jordan Davis and his even less production.
Even less production? Jordan Davis had 5 tackles for loss his last season at Georgia even with their heavy Dline rotation and his limited number of snaps. Mazi had six his entire collegiate career. As in all years combined. Jordan had 7.5 sacks at Georgia playing only NT against SEC Olines. Mazi had 0.5, again his entire collegiate career.

I’m all for being excited for the guy, you should be as it’s a dire need you’ve wanted for 10+ years. But you don’t have to make stuff up to try and get people pumped.

- Mazz was the best run stopping DT in the NFL draft, and he's a freakish athlete and tremendous body for a 340+ lb 1 tech, He may develop some power pushing rush skills, but if he
anything near another version of " Snack Harrison ", i'd be damn satisfied with that.

A dominant run defender who changes and forces the way opposing teams have to
play you. - Could not run inside on Snack and Hankins so force teams to take to outside only,

- Scoon ? A combo rookie TE that the Cowboys obviously feel more comfortable than current Ferguson and Henderson.

- Overshown ? i'd have to see how Quinn will fit and develop Overshown on a full time basis. i'd not think we'd spend a 3rd rd on a situational guy.

- Feheko ? - i thought i'd never see another Feheko, ..I heard Cowboys new asst DL coach Sheriff Floyd make mentioned that Feheko could eventually be a 3 tech.

- Scott ? Cowboys brass obviously know much more than we fans or draft gurus know about him.
Only had 3 INTs is somewhat a concern with me as we've strived for ball hawk skills.

- Richards ? he was listed on several mocks and profiles, he was athletic enuff to play OT at the college level, , but i could see him converted to OG in NFL, and maybe
emergency swing man.

- Da Duece ? A mini Darren Sproles ? Should he impress in camp and make the team- At the least, i'd expect him in spots and certain packages
Very heavily depends who the play caller and schemer is - run and pass, screen passes could be deadly as Pollard could be too.
Doesn't seem to offer special teams punt returns.

I think the additions of Gilmore, Mazi and Overshown make this already very good defense even better. Mazi should help the linebackers as well as everyone else on the defensive line. Far too many times Vander Esch had an immediate blocker in his face. I think for this defense to be at it's best they must force teams into 3rd and long situations. That is when opposing QB's are running for their lives and when turnovers happen. The addition of Gilmore gives us the best trio of CB's in recent memory. Overshown needs to work on his tackling and I am sure he will be coached up in that area but he is a quick to the ball kind of LB and can offer even more blitz options.

I still believe 3 tech is a weakness. It is time for Chauncey Goulston to step it up. Osa needs to continue to develop. Fahoko will eventually add to the depth but it sounds like he will start out at the Edge.

On offense I am not sure what to make of Schoonmaker. He certainly has the traits needed to become a very good all around TE but his lack of receiving production in college is concerning. Maybe scheme related. We will find out. I think the UDFA fullback makes this team and ends up being a weapon similar to what SF has. Deuce Vaughn will provide some exciting runs and I am actually interested in seeing him and pollard in the lineup at the same time. Maybe have a special package with Cooks, CD, Hendershot, Pollard, Vaughn and Turpin.

LG is the one spot I worry about and the domino effect it could have on the entire line. Several candidates to take over the spot but no sure thing. If Tyron could beat the odds and stay healthy all year we could end up with a a beast of a line but that seems unlikely.

You just never know which of these guys will end up being great and which will never show anything. Time will tell.

Neither does anyone. That's part of the problem. We try to assess these drafts based on ratings so-called experts put together, what we want and who we think is the best pick.

We get mad when the team takes a player we don't think they should have taken, and then try to figure out why they did it -- need, bad evaluation, etc -- acting like we know more than the team does. We justify that based off the team being wrong at times, which happens to all the teams and happens to us as well.

It's really hard for me to understand why we get so upset at this point in the process when we have no idea how these players will do. I enjoy the draft. I have certain expectations but I try to tamp them down because I have no idea whether taking Nolan Smith in the first round will turn out better than taking Maxi Smith or taking O'Cyrus Torrence in the second round will turn out better than taking Luke Schoonmaker. I might have expectations, but my expectations have been wrong before and will be wrong again. Maybe not on those players, but on others certainly.

So you have no idea. I have no idea. And no one else has any idea. And if they say differently, they are deceiving themselves. Some hated the Micah pick; some loved it. Others hated the Tyler Smith pick; some loved it. Etc. Happens every year.

Sure..he had more sacks with nfl talent all around him.

If you watched Mazi, you would see guys getting rid of the ball as they are hit. Also, his scheme did not call for him to be a penetrating DT...played a true nose in a 3-4.

Yet still managed to rack up 48 tackles while Jordan had his career high of 32.

You point out the rotation that Davis was in...if they didn't, he would have passed out on the field.

Mazi doesn't come off.
