I care about the media sometimes, because sometimes the media has a different insight on subjects. To me, it’s better to listen then be negative without considering what someone says.
I am a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan, now and then I get into the hoopla, but then I wake up and stay grounded. My thoughts this year, sure root for the cowboys, but they have to show me, they really want to win and they will win with a different attitude with heart and intensity in December.
I do like the part about flying under the radar, because I have been saying that the past 3 months. Like DC Fanatic said when I called him on the phone on opening day in training camp and wade was slamming his fist on the table. DC said don’t buy into the hoopla, wait and see what they do in December.
I like the roster pretty well all except about 3 positions, that don’t worry me in great detail but I have my suspicions or doubts. So, what the Cowboys have former pro bowl players 2 years ago, what are they doing now? Prove to me now that you are in shape, ready to hit and hit back and geared up for a monster year.
So, let’s take that stroll down the cowboys roster Hostile and see what we have.
First, amen to that, I am not a Wade Phillips fan either since he is our head coach and I do agree with you that having wade run the defense this year is a big, big plus for this team. Now, their are no more fingers to point to someone else, but the fingers on wade’s own hands pointing back at himself if problems arise. I am not superstitious, never have been, and I do think or feel that you can break old unbroken records. For example, the Cowboy’s under wade did finally beat the Packers up in Green Bay last year. Unlike 2007, Wade didn’t listen to media, former coaches to fix the December decline or the special teams. In fact that continued on in the 2008 season, but now with Wade knowing that this is it for him, he has woken up to special teams play, woken up to a harder training camp, woken up to chewing players out, list goes on and on. So, there are some positives to that. Now, at the same time, I didn't say that wade woke up to learning that players have to hit and tackle in training camp, but Wade did make things tougher on the players. That’s a start! Rome wasn’t built in a day.
The only 2 coaches that I didn’t like last year were Bruce Read and Brian Stewart. Read was a knucklehead! Stewart is just too young yet to be a defensive coordinator and for players to respect him as a coach, let alone defensive coordinator. To me you have to have some skins on the wall as a coach and stewart didn't have that.
So, amen to Bruce Read and Stewart not on the coaching staff anymore. I was glad we got Joe D too, now he is a coach like the Cowboys should have. If all our coaches were like him, the cowboys would get something done. Did you see the way he chewed out some players Friday night Hostile and he kinda pushed WR coach Ray Sherman aside and Sherman looked shocked? That is what is needed on this team, coaches with fire and bark. That trickles down to the players. I do feel that the special teams play will improve but not as quickly as you say Hostile, probably take about the 3rd or 4th game till you see significant improvement, but by the 8th game you should see a killer attitude on this team on special teams. That can help this team win some games.
Remember the hit by the kicker in the tampa bay game Hostile where the kicker lit up the return guy, that woke up the whole team. Special teams hits will rub off on this team like Bill Bates and Kenny Gant used to do, so totally agree with you on that.
On the QB issue I will say this, Romo has to do a better job in managing the game, for instance the throw to Ogletree in the 49er game. Romo even admits he shouldnt have thrown the ball. This is the key to this season, Romo must protect the ball better, No More Excuses!
Now, I do think Romo is a top 10 QB in the NFL, but he hasn’t shown it yet in December. I think having a backup QB like Kitna will push Romo in certain areas. Along with Romo knowing that possibly the future star of the Cowboys QB in Stephen McGee is on the roster now and Romo has to produce. Now talking about Brad No Arm Johnson, who was on board last year saying that he was an adequate QB? Was it Wade or Jason Garrett or Jerry Jones that believed Brad No Arm Johnson still could play? If you noticed, the same thing has happened this year with the backup offensive linemen in McQuistan and Proctor. Have you noticed that zoners and Hostile, same thing is being said about those guys as Brad Johnson in 2008. Who is to blame for that?
I think it relates to something I said after the season was over, and Jerry Jones was building the new stadium. I said you watch, Jerry Jones wont spend as much money this year on the players as in 2007 or 2008. I got blasted all over the board for saying that, but to me, Jerry Jones is pinching pennies this year and watching his spending. I believe that has some to do with the keeping of Brad Johnson in 2008 and the keeping of Proctor and McQuistan this year.
This is where I disagree with you a tad bit, but not on the running backs Felix, Barber and Choice. Those 3 are the cowboys biggest weapon this year along with the offensive line, TE’s, defense and special teams with buehler and mcbrair. Where I disagree with you is on the fullback position. Yeah, I know that as of right now, Cricket is our best choice, but Cricket is injury prone. We lost several games due to Cricket’s poor play last year and being hurt while missing some games. Now, this is where I go back to Jerry Jones and spending with money and our quality control coaches and scouts. This team still believes that our backups at offensive line are good with McQuistan and Proctor, as the same for fullback. This team also sat still and didn't get any good offensive linemen that were available after the waiver wire and cuts. Need I remind you Hostile about Hedgecock or whatever his name is that plays fullback for the Giants. The Cowboys could have gotten him, but they didn’t. Boiled down to money and Jerry Jones in control of the 53 man roster. Just like Jerry vetoed the Dan Reeves issue. The lack of fullback will come back and bite this team in the little rear end this year. And I said it here first.
With WR position, this is one area where I have a little concern. Roy Williams to me is a # 2 WR, not a number 1. I do think that Roy has talent, but he doesn't play up to it when need be and he is always getting injured like Austin and Hurd this year. This WR group reminds me of the lack of play at WR after T O left the eagles. I think our double TE play will offset that some, but our WR’s cant stay healthy. Now, at same time, like you were for Roy Williams Hostile, I was for T O. Will go on record saying that. However, I do agree with you that T O needed to go. All you had to do was watch one game where leonard Davis is on the sidelines and T O goes by him mouthing his big mouth off. Davis looked like he could kill him. Also, like you Hostile, I had some inside sources that told me some stuff T O was doing, so he had to go. Enough is enough! The team always comes first. I still am hoping for Austin to step up, but Ogletree I like, in time he may help this team like Drew Pearson did. So, there is hope!
The deepest unit on this team is at TE.
Totally agree with you on this. I will go on record too by saying this time next year, John Phillips will replace L P on snapping the ball on punts and field goals, so we can get a decent draft pick next year in the draft. John Phillps will be kinda like Billy Truax was, reliable and dependable. Not a super TE like Witten or Bennett but dependable and serviceable.
This team's success revolves around the O-line. I firmly believe that. There are a couple of players I wish were gone from that group, but my focus is on the starting 5, whom I think are more than adequate. I never liked Kyle Kosier until I saw how big a hole his absence made. Talk about wake up call. I know there will be some irritating false starts by our Tackles. I also know this OL is better than some suspect.
I totally agree with you on the offensive line too. I needed the wake up call on Kosier too. But our backups with Proctor and Mcquistan scares me badly. I do think that Doug Free will come around, and Preston with Holland will help this year.
I have been excited about the arrival of Olshansky all off season. I think he is an improvement over Canty, no disrespect meant to Canty. I just think he plays more perfectly to a 3-4 scheme as a run stuffer and will take pressure off Ratliff and Ware. Siavii finally showed me something in the last PS game, I still would like to see that backup NT upgraded.
I disagree with you alittle here on Igor, he mostly is a run stopper, very stiff in his pass rush, wished he had worked with Spears with Randy White for pass rush moves. I still have hopes for Hatcher too. Sivaii and Bowen are good role players and will help.
Welcome to the spotlight Anthony Spencer. Call me crazy but I think he is the key to this season. If he provides any kind of pass rush at all it makes Ware even that more dangerous. In my opinion, DeMarcus Ware is the best Defensive player in the NFL. The additions of Olshansky and Brooking along with Spencer's arrival make him the most formidable force for this D that we could possibly have. Make no mistake about it, Brooking is a huge addition. I loved Zach Thomas, but if you saw Brooking this pre-season you caught a glimpse of someone who could be every bit as disruptive as the under appreciated Bradie James. Smart players at ILB are crucial. Players who are smart and play fast as James and Brooking do, is a blessing.
Totally agree with you on the linebackers. I do think that Curtis Johnson will surprise and after Butler gets his feet wet and over the wall he has hit, linebacker will be a stronger position with Octavian too. Brandon Williams and hopefully Hodge will be the big answer next year.
There's a squabble over who the RCB should be. I think that is irrelevant. I think all 3 CBs will be on the field a lot because in today's NFL Nickel and Dime packages are more important than base schemes. Last year the CBs did everything well except one thing. They did not take away the ball nearly enough. That will be crucial this year as well.
Totally agree with this, and I am still hoping that Mickens comes through. I still think his knee is bothering him some. This is another area of strength of our team, with Newman, Scandrick and Jenkins we will have the top 3 cbs in the league at the end of the year, as long as Newman stays healthy. That's the big key because as you know our defense got better after Newman came back, but was too little too late.
Improved coverage from Gerald Sensabuagh could help in that department. In fact it should help. If you take the top team in sacks and add some takeaways to the picture you potentially have a dominant Defense.
Totally agree, Gerald might be a big piece to the puzzle on our defense like Hamlin was in 2007. This will allow our defense to be a top 3 defense this year.
A steady Offense and a dominant Defense with improved Special teams could mean a better season than a lot of people think. I'm excited to see if they can pull it off.
I agree with you on this, but not sure if its enough to catch up to the Giants and Eagles because they improved in the draft while we didn't.
Interesting fact, we need at least 11-5 to not have our very first losing decade. Not even the 1960's before the powerhouse Cowboys arrived did we have a losing decade. Is that a tall order? You bet it is. Is it impossible? Not in my book.
Totally agree I think the Cowboys can win 2 more games than last year, due to mainly special teams, defense, ball control and kicking off by buehler. Its like parcells said, lost field yardage, which we lost an average of 7.3 points due to lost yardage on kickoffs last year a game. With adding that in, we lost 4 games due to 6 points or less. So, if you take a tougher schedule this year, and addition of 4 games due to special teams play, that should give the cowboys a plus of 2 games to win.
Outlook for 2009? Better chemistry, better special teams, Wade running the Defense for the whole year, and a return to health on the Offense, could mean a return to prominence. Standing in the way is the fact we are once again in a tough division battle. Welcome back optimism, we missed you. 12-4 and NFC East Champions.
Pass the Koolaid. Make it blue please. I'm not superstitious, but I'm superstitious.I say 11-5 season, make the playoffs, win a wild card game or 2.
